Firstly a message to our friends in the Old Bill. Thanks. As dozens of coppers nurse injuries this morning, it is pretty clear that we owe them a debt of gratitude for not running away when bunches of yobs decided to grab themselves free tellies or new pairs of trainers in Tottenham, Enfield, Brixton etc. How many of us have job descriptions which include "occasionally getting thumped"? As Kit Malthouse and Boris Johnson wake up this morning, maybe they'll think to themselves "Maybe we should rethink our masterplan to slash police numbers". Let's hope that the Laurel and Hardy of London Lawmaking see a bit of sense.
I am shocked by the fact that the vast majority of trouble seems purely to be an excuse to rob shops. I'd urge all parents to ask little Johnny where he got those new trainers or telly last night. If we descend into a society where such crimes are seen by the young as great fun and a way to get the things we want, we are truly fucked.
I'm all for protest against injustice. Against repressive regimes, violent protest is sometimes the only way. It is 100% clear that in the riots around London, no such justification exists. As a responsible society, we must unite, pull together and make sure that anyone who loots in a riot, not only feels the full force of law, but is also made to realise that wider society rejects their behaviour.

i have on good knowledge from my partner inside the met that this was brewing since thursday, (since the shooting) and the fact is the family that had their son shot have been told ALL THE FACTS, and are blatently lying and also the older brother is being watched closely now as well for gang related incidents, all of which the met are trying to control to the best of their abilities, but, and this is a big but, it depends on future funding, as to whether they can carry on searching and routing out the gang cultures across london. money again, money always talks, even when it comes to peoples safety, livlihoods and homes! disgusting! and no politicians of any worth can come back off holidays to answer to their own people? this city is a disgrace, this country is a disgrace!
ReplyDelete.... indeed; i in no way condone the violence and injury that took place in Tottenham; then i think of the example that is being shown...MP's expenses, backhanders to certain members of society by newspapers for info.... and meanwhile cutbacks to funding for projects that help the Tottenham community. This is an area of serious depravation, I travel to White Hart Lane regularly, and really it is another country.... and there are other areas like it in the UK, somebody, somewhere has to do something... and it should really begin with our political leaders.... when they get back from their summer hols...
ReplyDeleteIts true - the coppers have done a good job. But its going to take a lot more than parents telling their kids off to fix a generation of poor education and a massive moral vaccum.
