The Saturday List - #24 - Famous customers of Mill Hill Music Complex

As it's Saturday, I thought I'd do the day job on the blog for a change. When I first started blogging on the Barnet Times, the idea was to cover the local music scene. I must apologise, I have failed miserably in this task. I do believe that the subject needs covering and should be covered. There are many great talents and great gigs in Barnet. My new years resolution is to remedy this. Ideally I'd like a few guest bloggers to help cover the local music scene, so if you are interested, let me know. First off, a plug for a great local gig coming up soon.

Every last Wednesday of every month we invite top class professionals and amateurs to sing and play with our house band. We never know what's going to happen till it does. And when it does it never fails to give us all a great evening of improvised Jazz - just like it's supposed to be.

Not only do our guest soloists accumulate on stage through the evening but they are all backed by one of the best supporting bands in the UK - Ted Beament (ex Humphrey Littleton) on keys, Steve Picking on bass and Mike Paxton on drums.

Here is the first song I ever wrote. It is called the Mill Hill Song. It was written in 1977, back when there wasn't a pub in Mill Hill, in fact there was virtually nothing apart from an Indian restaurant, a couple of Chinese restaurants and La Catarina, if you wanted a night out.

The Mill Hill Song

Nothing to do
Nothing to see
Nothing for you
Nothing for me

Mill Hill Mill Hill
 It's Lovely

No nightspots
No dayspots
No Fun
Just Shops

Mill Hill Mill Hill
It's Lovely

I love it!

I have made it my lifes mission to make Mill Hill a little bit more interesting for the residents. To this end, I've organised numerous gigs, am on the Mill Hill Music Festival Organising committee and I run Mill Hill Music Complex studios. We get approx 1,000 musicians a week passing thru. People travel from all over the country to use our studios and tomorrow we

welcome punk Pioneers, The Damned in to rehearse before there tour. As it is the custom on a Saturday, I thought I'd make a list of ten of our famous customers over the years, just to give you some idea how Mill Hill has changed since 1977

1. The Damned

2. Amy Winehouse

3. Kate Nash

4. Eddie Floyd

5. David Soul

6. The Foundations

7. The Beautiful South

8. Morrissey

9. Lee Thompson, Chas Smash and Chrissie of Madness

10. Albert Lee

And a special mention to Boz Boorer and the Polecats, who were our first ever paying customers !

Mill Hill is not the only place where things are happening, Friern Barnet has also seen a rebirth with Friern Barnet library at the heart of it. Here is there newsletter.
