I tried to save the Burnt Oak cigarette machine- a late surviving example of what was once a common feature of our streets- but, even after some effort, could never identify its owner. It's probably just as well: at least the machine remains in situ in its locality. Had I taken it for Church Farm, it would just been cast to the four winds in 2013, with the rest of the Museum's Local Collection, by the philistine Tory scum who run Barnet Council.
