The Barnet Eye Advent Calendar - 2nd December

Today is day two of the Barnet Eye Advent Calendar. This series will run every day until Xmas day.  If you are interested in the history of our community, then hopefully you'll enjoy it. We will give you a little snippet of our love our neighbourhood and we'll also feature a link to a great local charity, so if you are inspired, you can do your bit and make this festive season a little better for someone who may just appreciate some help.

Today we are featuring Colindale. Back in 1951, Colindale lead the world. Checkout this British Pathe film from 1951 about the British Museum Newspaper Library at Colindale.

Sadly the Newspaper Library left the Colindale and the Borough a few years ago. The fine building was recently knocked down So in homage to this great institution, Todays Charity is the Colindale foodbank. Sadly foodbanks have become a feature of Great Britain in 2022.  For many, they are needed more than ever

Whilst I think this is truly awful, we cannot bury our heads in the sand, The Trussell Trust sponsor the Colindale foodbank. Food and sanitary products are collected and distributed to people in our community in dire need. 

I can think of nothing more in the true spirit of Xmas than a donation to the Colindale foodbank, check their for full details website - http://colindale.foodbank.org.uk/ - Please drop off tea, coffee, dried food (pasta, rice, etc), tinned food (soup, veg, Meat & Fish), biscuits, Jam etc.   Please help.

Urgent appeal for donations from Colindale Foodbank

For many families on tight budgets, December is a difficult month. The Christmas and the cold weather inevitably brings all manner of unexpected expenses. It is a busy time at our local foodbanks and we should support our local Foodbanks.

The Colindale foodbank was the Barnet Eye charity of the year 2017. We urge you to support them. The first weekend of every month, there is a collection for Colindale Foodbank in Mill Hill at
The Sacred Heart RC Church on Mill Hill Broadway. You can just drop a bag of provisions into the narthex (lobby area by doors) or leave it at the Presbertery. You don't have to be a member of the chuch, just pop a bag in and it will be delivered to the foodbank by volunteers on Monday.

They are a great local charity, with miniscule admin overheads  helping those most at risk in our community.

Colindale Foodbank appeals for donations for the the Summer Holiday - Watch the video to find out why

For many people and families dealing with financial hardship, times such as the summer holidays are especially difficult. Colindale Foodbank appealing for donations to help people get through this time. 

Colindale Foodbank invited local filmmaker Roger Tichborne down to see the operation in action and show why the donations make such a difference. 

The video dispels the myth that Foodbanks give handouts to people who don't need it and shows that it can help turn people's lives around. Roger said "It was a  real eye opener to see the Foodbank in operation and hear the stories of the volunteer and clients. Whilst all compassionate people would prefer it if there was no need for foodbanks, if we don't generously support them, the hardest pressed families in our community go hungry. Whilst we need to find long term solutions to alleviate poverty, in the short term a donation to the foodbank is a practical way to make a difference".

This weekend, the Sacred Heart church in Mill Hill holds its monthly collection. Simply drop off bags  for collection in the foyer area (Narthex) of the Church or on the alter if you are attending a service. Other  Mill Hill locations are also listed below.

Urgent Appeal - Colindale foodbank collection this weekend in Mill Hill

  Christmas is coming. Tomorrow sees the start of Advent, when we get our advent calendars and a daily treat. There are some in our community who sadly won't be getting an advent calendar or any other treats this year. They are our neighbours who rely on local foodbanks to survive. Please consider making a donation as Christmas is perhaps the time of year when you can make the most difference.

The first full weekend of every month, there is a collection for Colindale Foodbank in Mill Hill. The Sacred Heart RC Church on the Broadway is the designated collection point. You can just drop a bag of provisions into the narthex (lobby area by doors) or leave it at the Presbertery. The church is the Mill Hill collection point. At this time of year, many regular donors are away. It is also a time when many families have an extra mouth to feed at lunchtimes, when children are not at school, therefore it is vital to make sure that donations are made. This has been supported by people all across the Borough.

UHT Milk or powdered

Tinned or packet Soup

Sponge Pudding (tinned)

Tomatoes (tinned)

Instant Mash potatoes

Tinned meat and fish

Tinned Vegetables

Tinned fruit

Jam

Biscuits or snack bars

There is also a regular collection point at Waitrose in Mill Hill East, so you can buy a few extra provisions and pop them in. It is a sad fact of life that we need such collections in 2017. Please pop a few provisions in a bag and help a few local families. The provisions are collected and dropped off on a Monday morning and distributed.
