Barnet Council - Legal Fees

It appears that Barnet Council are getting very jumpy about the amount of money they are spending on legal fees. My moles at the council tell me that us Barnet bloggers should take a bit of an interest in the way this has gone up over the last few years.

It is sad to think how many library jobs this sum could have saved.

Oh and a big hello to Trowers and Hamlins, who have been working very late tonight visiting my blog. I hope this isn't at overtime rates and chargeable to me (the taxpayer).

What is death?

As regular readers will know, a good friend of mine recently passed away. Losing someone who I grew up with has been a massive shock to me and I have struggled to deal with some aspects of the experience. It strikes me that if I've had major issues, maybe other people have as well. Maybe writing about some of the things which have gone through my mind, will in some way help to deal with it.

Perhaps the strangest and most troubling thought is "what is death"? When do we actually die? From a clinical perspective, it seems to me that this is not as clear cut as we think. When Fabrice Muamba had heart attack playing for Bolton Vs Spurs, we were told he was "dead for 90 minutes". Wikipedia has a helpful definition of clinical death - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_death -

Clinical death is the medical term for cessation of blood circulation and breathing, the two necessary criteria to sustain life.[1] It occurs when the heart stops beating in a regular rhythm, a condition called cardiac arrest.

But it isn't that simple, is it. Organs can be taken from the body after death and transplanted, and work perfectly well. A body can be kept alive, almost indefinitely when all brain activity has ceased.  Which makes me wonder, how long after clinical death is the person conscious of what is happening around them? Near Death Experiences are well documented. These certainly seem to indicate a residual level of awareness. In my friends case, the cessation of breathing was taken as death. What troubles me is that we don't know what goes on in the brain. A certain peacefulness, following the battle against pain and cancer appeared to take over my friend. Given the terrible pain and suffering he'd been experiencing, I  must assume that he had a degree of relief that this had finished. Given his circumstances, there were no monitors checking for brain activity and given the levels of pain relief, we had no last message or goodbyes. Another good friend of mine died eleven years ago of Pancreatic cancer. He was lucid up until the final moments, giving a running commentary of the experiences and emotions he was feeling. He even sought to give me advice on the running of the studios and what I needed to do.

My sister is a hospice nurse and she has witnessed the death of hundreds of people. She told me that in her opinion spiritual people have spiritual deaths and non spiritual people don't. She is of the opinion that we tend to get the experience that we expect to get. I am not sure whether that is reassuring or not.

I was contacted by a well meaning reader of the blog, who assured me that I shouldn't worry about my friend, as they will be reincarnated and have the opportunity to correct all of their mistakes. I must say that of all the possible options, reincarnation is the one which I hope doesn't happen. If the atheists are correct and there is nothing, then there really is nothing to worry about is there? If my lot, The Roman Catholics are correct, I'll get judged. I like to think I'm one of the good guys, but I could be in for a very nasty surprise. Although my teachers back in the 1960's and 70's used to try and scare the living daylights out of us all, with stories of fire and brimstone, I can't really say I've ever seriously considered Hell as an option. Now if one of the other brands of Judeo-Christain-Islamic faiths is the right brand, I feel I may still be in with a decent shout. But then consider reincarnation. I love my life as an adult, I have a scream of a time. I  would not want to go through childhood and puberty again. It was a horrible time and I was deeply unhappy for most of it. Don't get me wrong, I love my family and my homelife, but outside of that so many things were rotten. School, until I was 15 was a daily battle just to survive with my sanity.

We had teachers who were merciless bullies and at times bordered on being evil sadists. Of course most  weren't, but the ones that were took great joy in humiliating and inflicting pain on children. To be honest, I became pretty immune to it. After the hundredth time I'd been called to the front of the class to be ritually humiliated, it stopped bothering me. I decided that if I was going to get clobbered, I may as well make it worthwhile, so I'd try my hardest to rile the teacher before they got a chance to hit me. They would then inform me they were really going to make it painful. As an adult I simply wouldn't tolerate that sort of treatment, the thought of being a child again and suffering it again is perhaps my darkest fear.

Then there was the uncertainty of puberty, with raging hormones and an ingrained morality that caused me to feel guilty about my feelings. I can remember being about 13 years old and being an alter server. There was an extremely cute girl in the congregation. As mass went on, all I could think about was her and what I'd like to do with her. I was so engrossed in my fantasy that I forgot to ring the bell at communion. I felt like I was doomed to hell for my sins as I realised the horrifying enormity of what I'd done. After mass, I felt like all of the congregation hated me. I felt that they knew exactly why I'd fluffed the bellringing and hated me for it. Would I want to feel like that again? No chance whatsoever.

There were many other things which I didn't enjoy. Becoming an adult meant no more shit from anyone. No one telling me I was a moron, no one berating me for coming bottom of the class. It meant shedding all of the self doubt and irrational fears which had been drummed into me.

Coming back to the question, What is death. I'm really none the wiser. It is something which I'm not afraid of, but am very apprehensive about. As to what comes after, I guess we have to believe what suits us.  I don't have any answers, I don't think I've even found all of the questions yet.

Failed Lib Dem Candidate attacks Barnet Bloggers

I was truly astonished to see a very nasty and sly attack on Barnet Bloggers by the Lib Dem candidate for Hendon, Matthew Harris, in the Jewish Chronicle - http://www.thejc.com/blogs/matthewharris/pro-palestinian-tory-and-local-jewish-community .

Matthew Harris said "I have never wasted much time blogging about Barnet Council. I have wasted lots of time blogging about other things, but rarely about that. There is a band of bloggers who spend all their time blogging about the Council as if it was Parliament and they were Private Eye...One such is Mrs Angry (I know, I know). "

Harris then continues with a long attack on Mrs Angry. Of course Matthew Harris is entitled to his view. I would point out that Harris came a very distant third in the Hendon constituency election. I worked with Matthew Harris on his campaign as I was at the time standing as a Lib Dem candidate in the Mill Hill  Council ward. Whilst the Lib Dem Council candidates in Mill Hill lost, they polled the highest ever number of votes for the ward for Lib Dems. This was based on sheer hard work and attention to local issues. Whilst I've held my counsel about Matthew's suitability as a candidate, as he's chosen to take a sly dig at my blog, I think the time has come to put the record straight.

I am no longer a member of the Liberal Democrat Party. I felt that I couldn't remain a member given the policies of the coalition government, which I could not possibly support. Having said that I believe that the local Lib Dem politicians and activists are head and shoulders above the other parties in Barnet, both in the council chamber and on the streets. I suspect that Lib Dem Leader Jack Cohen is the only opposition councillor that the Tories truly fear (apart from possibly Labours Kath McGuirk, who I am sure is a descendent of Queen Boudicca). The former Lib Dem Councillors Wayne Casey and Jeremy Davies in Mill Hill and Duncan MacDonald in High Barnet were exemplary councillors and Barnet Council is a far worse place for their passing. The activists who helped me canvass were also fantastic and one of the reasons I have not been more strident in my views on the Lib Dem party is out of respect for these people. I genuinely believe that on a local level, the Lib Dems have a lot to offer in Barnet.

The one fly in the ointment was Mr Matthew Harris. Matthew always struck me as having a very disdainful attitude towards local people, local issues and local campaigns. I used to joke with other Lib Dem activists that Matthew was preparing for a career in the House of Lords. He let slip on a few occasions his contempt for the "Barnet Blogs". I took him to task for this on one occasion and he replied that he was only interested in "real politics" (whatever that may be). Whilst it was clear to me that the only hope of success for the Lib Dems in Barnet was to be seen to be fervently localist in their campaigning, Matthew was not in the least bit interested in stooping to these levels. His attitude to people on the doorstep was a nightmare. He was extremely patronising and he had an awful tendency to lecture people on their own doorsteps. During the course of the campaign dozens of local people privately told me that they thought he was a complete idiot.  A common refrain was to ask whether we'd put him up to ensure people voted for Andrew Dismore, to keep Matthew Offord out.

Perhaps the biggest problem for the Lib Dems in Mill Hill was trying to deal with the strident views of Pro Palestinian Jenny Tonge, a Lib Dem peer. Many Jewish voters told me that they could not possibly vote Lib Dem with her in the party. As I was new to the party, I was at first completely taken aback by the vehemence of this feeling. As Matthew Harris is Jewish and a Member of the Lib Dem friends of Israel, I was under the impression that he should have been able to easily diffuse the issue. Sadly every utterence he made seemed to inflame the problem. At one point during the campaign, he even threatened to stand down, because Tonge had made some pronouncement he disagreed with. Can you imagine Mike Freer saying that, because of Matthew Offords remarks about Gay marriage? In short he was a loose cannon and we had no idea what he would do next. Whilst the rest of us worked as a team, Matthew had his own agenda. After the first TV debate, when Nick Clegg put in a brilliant performance (remember that), Matthew decided that the Hendon seat may actually be winnable. Whilst the strategy had been for him to bolster the council candidates in High Barnet and Mill Hill to help the party build a viable organisation, where there was a realistic chance of winning Council seats, Matthew started demanding that we give him greater visibility. In short, he threw a spanner in the works.

In his comments, Matthew Harris shows clear disdain for the blogs of Barnet. It is a measure of how out of touch he is that he fails to acknowledge the role the blogs have played in changing the face of Barnet politics. I believe that the blogs were the defining factor in the defeat of Brian Coleman in the GLA elections. Whilst many people and organisations played a part, the blogs tied all of these strand together. Harris also fails to acknowledge the scandals that the blogs have uncovered and the money we've saved Barnet. Perhaps he should google "METPRO SCANDAL".

Matthew Harris is an example of the worst kind of politician. He has no interest in the small issues that he can change. He has no interest in day to day campaigning. He only comes out at election time. Worst of all, he is pompous and completely up himself. His criticisms of Mrs Angry, I believe are born as much out of jealousy for her profile as any deep seated disagreement with her. In fact his criticism is nonsensical. He contends that Mrs Angry is wrong to suppose that Tory Jewish voters should be wary of a candidate with pro Palestinian views. Harris suggests that Palestinian supporters would be happy to vote for him, even though he supports Israel and it's various military interventions. These are clearly the blatherings of a deluded fool. That is like suggesting that I as a Roman Catholic should support Ian Paisley because he is a good constituency MP (which I believe he is), despite his years of Anti Catholic bile. Sorry Matthew, but the real world doesn't work like that.

If Matthew Harris worked one tenth as hard as Mrs Angry has over the last two years on local issues and connecting with local people, then he may actually be taken seriously as a politician.

Friern Barnet Peoples Library on the One Show

Robert Rams vision for a new library in Barnet
Yesterday evening, the One Show on BBC1 contained a feature on Friern Barnet Peoples library and a short interview with yours truly - you can watch the interview on BBC IPlayer here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01j2mr5/ - the main guest was Melvyn Bragg, who was vocal in his appreciation for the contribution of libraries to society. It seems that everyone apart from Councillor Robert Rams, who is responsible for the library service appreciates the need for a good network of libraries. Sadly the council, as ever economical with the truth, are spinning the "we have to save a million pounds" argument. This is spurious, because the only reason they have to cut the budget is because they have decided to cut it.

This blog, together with the other Barnet bloggers, emailed Council leader Richard Cornelius with a list of proposals that would easily cover the cost of running Friern Library. Recently it was revealed that 47 individuals working for Barnet Council were paid over £100,000 per year. We suggested that these individuals should receive a 20% pay cut if they earn more than £150,000 per annum and 10% cut if they earn £100,000 - £150,000. By my maths, this would realise a minimum of £470,000. The budget for running Friern Library is a pittance compared to this figure. Of course, Barnet Council summarily dismissed this suggestion. Council Leader Richard Cornelius never even bothered to reply. I am rather disappointed with this display of bad manners by the leader of the council.

The peoples library was originally suggested by this blog as a protest to highlight the need for a properly run and funded library in Friern Barnet. The fact we've been recognised by Melvyn Bragg, the BBC and just about every sane and rational person in the Borough as having made an excellent case for reopening the library cannot be ignored any more. It is a source of great frustration that a philistine such as Rams is charged with running such a valuable service. Rams recently revealed that he was brought up in Southend. The fact that he purely sees Barnet as a convenient stop off point in his political career is quite clear from his attitude. I've lived in the Borough for all of my life, my parents are buried here and my children go to school here. In short I have a great personal investment in the Borough. That is why I'm fighting tooth and nail for the retention of vital services. I don't see Barnet as a convenient stop off point in my career, it is my life. If you wonder why I fight so passionately for our local services, it is because one day I hope to grow old in Barnet. I will need the services which the Barnet Conservatives are destroying.

I daresay that Rams plans a retirement in a leafy Tory Shire somewhere, sitting on his nice pension, paid by the public purse. He has made it quite clear that he sees librarys and books as old fashioned and outdated. He would rather see the libraries run by Starbucks, with a book section tucked away in the corner. When he launched the original strategic library review he suggested that people should buy books from Tesco's. This showed a completely out of touch politician, with no understanding of the finances of raising a family on a tight budget, or the challenges for elderly pensioners in Barnet.

It seems that people are waking up to the value of the library service. Let's hope that the message gets through to the boneheads at Barnet who just don't seem to get it.

Rams gets it wrong (again)

Councillor Robert Rams (AKA Little Bobby Sheepsjacksie) has a very interesting approach to blogging. He is under the impression that his cohorts of admirers are so keen to hang on his every word that when he can't be bothered to actually write a blog, their insatiable lust for his blatherings can be met by simply reprinting Barnet Council press releases. The latest example of this was his May 10th "Blog" -

http://robertrams.wordpress.com/2012/05/10/residents-given-the-chance-to-lend-a-hand/

This details the success of the scheme to allow Barnet residents the opportunity to volunteer in local libraries. The council tell us that 35 people have offered their services and so far 10 have been engaged to help. What Bobby doesn't mention are the hundreds of people who have turned up every week to support Friern Barnet Peoples library and the campaign to reopen the library shut by Rams.

There are many aspects of Rams behaviour I find rather offensive, but the crass hypocrisy of his treatment of the campaigners for the Friern hub tops the lot. Rams strung them along for nearly a year, pretending he was listening to their plans to develop a community hub, with volunteers working with trained librarians to widen the services offered at Friern Library and making the site a cost effective community resource. Imagine the anger these public spirited citizens felt when they were told that Barnet Council and Robert Rams never had any intention of keeping the library running. They had spent months on end working on proposals, only to be told they never had a chance of success.

Rams states in the press release :-
Becoming a library volunteer is a fantastic opportunity for people to make a contribution to the wider community by giving up a little of their time
What would you say to someone who got you to waste months of your life, believing you were being community spirited, only to find that Rams (who gets a generous allowance paid by your tax for his time) has completely mislead you?

When the #SaveFBL campaign was originally set up, it was suggested that it would be better if I did not get involved, despite me starting the campaign to protect Barnet's libraries. The campaign felt a more conciliatory approach towards Robert Rams and the Conservative administration would have a better chance of saving the library. As the library was not on my patch and the campaign was well supported and organised, I was quite happy to step aside. The campaign did some excellent work, producing viable proposals. Last year, one of the campaigners gave me a ticking off, saying "You should try harder to work with the Council, they have been very helpful. Robert Rams is not as unreasonable as you make out". Last week, I asked the same person if they still held that view. Lets just say that their response is unprintable.

The one thing Robert Rams has been completely honest about is what sort of a character he really is. Back in 2009, his old boss at Barnet Council was Mike Freer. Freer described myself and David Miller (AKA Don't Call Me Dave) as One Handed Bloggers in an interview. When asked to explain what the term meant he explained "they write the about me with one hand and you can imagine what they are doing with the other hand". Interestingly Robert Rams recently wrote  a blog entitled "I'm a One Handed Blogger" - http://robertrams.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/im-a-one-handed-blogger/ - a sentiment many in Barnet will agree with. One wonders if there is a subconscious insight into his view of community minded volunteers, who give up their time for free, hidden in the email address for people who want to volunteer - lendahand@barnet.gov.uk .

I am all for volunteering and giving up spare time. I do a shift every week at a drop in centre for the homeless. I hope that the staff at our libraries get plenty of volunteers to assist them and expand services (not replace them). For more information on becoming a library volunteer visit www.barnet.gov.uk/volunteer or call Hannah Richens on 020 8359 7779.

Please don't let Rams put you off.

Where do the Tories find these idiots? Brian Colemans LFEPA chair shows crass insensitivity in tweet

I thought that with Brian Coleman London Conservative Politics had reached the bottom of the barrel for crass insensitivity. It seems that his replacement as chair of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority is even worse in the crass statements stakes. He just posted this comment on Twitter :-

Just seen a fire engine flying up Southwalk High Street on a shout. Got a real buzz from that!

Doesn't it occur to this imbecile that fire engines are only called out when there is a serious problem. Granted that it may be a cat stuck up a tree, but it could be someones house burning down. Lives may be danger or even lost. What sort of a person gets a buzz from the fact people may be at risk and their home may be destroyed. If he'd said he felt proud to be leading these brave men, I would have applauded. It appears he just doesn't get the serious job he's bee given.

Finchley and Golders Green MP advocates being lazy as a lifestyle!

Ask anyone which Prime Minister was the biggest workaholic and they will probably tell you that it was Margaret Thatcher, who took great pride in getting by on three hours sleep. A close runner up would be Gordon "I saved the world" Brown. Whatever you may or may not think of these two and I must confess to being a fan of neither, I was rather surprised and a tad amused by the successor to Lady Thatcher's constituency, Mike Freer coming out on twitter as am advocate of being a lazy git and a slob. I wonder how her Ladyship will view her successors comments. Those of us who were blogging in the days of Mike Freer's leadership will be amused to see him slagging off of his political mentor, Gordon Brown. Freer was a big fan of Brown's stealth taxes, Stalinist tendencies and like Brown could be very thin skinned in the face of criticism.

I must say that since Mike has become an MP, he does seem to have become nicer for the opportunity to put his feet up and chill out a bit. Let's hope Brian Coleman will also become nicer for his voter imposed rest.At times he even seems to have developed a sense of humour. I suppose if Matthew Offord MP is your best buddy, you jolly well need one.

Here's Mike's tweet.

Brown was total workaholic +we know how successful that was! Import that the PM is able to relax.

The great Barnet conservative delusion

I am truly dumbfounded. I was told that the Barnet Conservatives have concluded that the staggering humiliation, Brian Coleman received at the GLA elections was "not their fault". They have decided that a "nasty media campaign, lead by bloggers" did for Brian and that it was nothing at all to do with them and their policies.

I am sorry to say that if this is whatthey truly believe, rather than just a biot of convenient spin, they have lost the plot. Brian Coleman was the figurehead for the toxic parking policies, the abolition of  Pay and Display, the huge CPZ cost hike and a raft of other measures, designed to upset local people. The trouble for the Conservatives, is that they all agreed with him. He's in a cabinet of 11 and they all endordsed the policies. Even worse, they are still persisiting with them. Councillors like little Bobby Ramsbottom believe that abolishing parking charges in one car park in their ward will save them, but Coleman lost 40,000 votes. 99% of these have never been anywhere near Booby's favourite car park. They ditched the Conservatives because these stealth taxes have added immeasurable cost and hassle to their daily lives. Tinkering at the edges and making a few cosmetic changes will fool nobody.

There is a by-election in Brunswick Park coming up. The only way to ensure that the Barnet Conservatives get the message is to vote for someone else. Even if you are a staunch Conservative, consider this. Losing the Brunswick Park by election will not cost the Conservatives control of the council. It will however show them that they have lost their way in regard to their parking policies. A vote for the Conservatives in the Brunswick Park by election is a vote for the delusion that Brian Coleman is the only problem. If they lose the seat, they will be forced to face up to the fact that they need a root and branch review of their policies. I had hoped that the Coleman result would force this reality upon them. Sadly they have stuck their fingers in their ears and are shouting "LA LA LA" as loudly as they can.

The choice is yours. Vote Consrvatives for stealth taxes and delusion or Someone else for sanity.

Congratulations to Chelsea and West Ham

What a weekend of football. The footballing Gods were smiling on  London this weekend. Arguably both losing teams played the better football and the statistics seem to back that up. I think that what makes football so compelling is that none of this matters, it is justthe team that sticks the ball in the net the most times which wins. What other game can you only play well for one minute in 90 and still win? being fair, both Chelsea and the Hammers stuck to the task and hung on in there. The banner of the day was held up by Hammers fans rephrasing Ian Dury's old catchline "Sex and Drugs and Carlton Cole". West Ham gave England the world cup with Peters, Hurst and Moore. I am glad they are back in the premiership, although I am desperately sorry for Ian Holloway who has worked miracles on a shoestring. He is always value for money.

As to Chelsea, if any two players in the Premiership deserved a champions league medal, surely Drogba and Chech would? Drogba is a force of nature. I actually knew he'd score the goal, before the ball left the corner quadrant. As someone who has played football (albiet at the lowest possible level) as a Centre Half, Drogba is the type of player you least want to play against. He's strong, quick and goes down like a sack of spuds if you do so much as sniff him. He can hold a ball up, you cant' knock him off the ball, even when he has his back to the goal he's a threat. In some ways he reminds me of Mark Hughes in his heyday. As for Peter Chech. What a player. He saved three penalties in the game. He nearly saved the other three. Those two carried Chelsea through.

I sincerely hope that Abaramovich gives Roberto the job. How many managers can come in with a team in disarray and win everything they could still win? People talk about Mourhino, but he couldn't achieve in the years he had what Di Matteo has done in three months. It would be a truly bizarre move to get rid of him now.

But as anyone who knows football will realise. Sanity and football don't mix.
