The Saturday List #206 - Five great blogs about Barnet which you might not be aware of

Back in May 2012, I compiled a complete list of Barnet Blogs - http://barneteye.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-saturday-list-13-blogs-of-barnet.html - detailing all of the blogs I could find that were Barnet related. Sadly a quick trawl through reveals nearly all of these are now inactive. Some are protected, some have disappeared, some have moved. But do not despair, although the Barnet Eye has gone part time as we write our memoirs, there are some excellent new blogs that have stepped up to fill the breach.

Here are my top five.

1. http://www.alexworld.co.uk/ - Non League Football blog
This is an excellent piece of work. Local English teacher Alex Sarychkin's project to visit all of the non league football teams based in and with links to The London Borough of Barnet. If you love the culture of football, it is a must. for full disclosure, he's my nephew, and a very fine one at that! Well worth a look.

2. https://theworldofbirdsblogs.weebly.com
What Alex is doing for Non League footie in Barnet, Samuel Levy is doing for birdwatching. Samuel has a special interest in The Totteridge Valley. I have often seen him as we walk our mutts over the fields, although I've yet to say hello. I love his pictures cataloging the wildlife on our doorstep and his work has certainly sparked an interest in our local wildlife. Samuel travels far and wide, but his pictures of Totteridge Valley, which is his spiritual birding home are fab. For the record, he's not my nephew ;) His Twitter is  https://twitter.com/FinchleyBirder

3. http://www.longlanepasture.org/newsletters.html
Strictly speaking, this isn't a blog, it is the archive of newsletters from Long Lane Pasture, but it should be. Long Lane Pasture is one of our local gems.  It is described as a 2 acre remnant of Finchley Common, now restored meadowland saved from housing & looked after by volunteers. It's a haven for wildlife. Their Twitter is https://twitter.com/LLPasture

4. https://pastrewind.wordpress.com/
Strictly speaking, this is not a Barnet blog, as it ranges far wider. It is the work of good friend of this blog Mark Amies, but much of what he covers is in the Borough or nearby, with recent features on Cricklewood and The Railway Hotel in Edgware. Mark is currently doing a weekly slot on a Tuesday on The Robert Elms show, covering industrial heritage.  The twitter feed for Marks nostalgia blog is https://twitter.com/MuseumOfThePast

5. https://ultimatelondonpubcrawl.wordpress.com/2015/12/22/burnt-oak-december-2015/
I couldn't really finish this round up without a nod to this very special blog. What better way to see in the new year than on a pub crawel around Burnt Oak! There are other pub crawls in the Borough listed. Sadly they went on holiday in 2017 and have yet to resume their crawl. I loved this blog, as someone always on the lookout for a new pub to visit

Have a great weekend!
