Boris Johnson has decided to reappoint Brian Coleman to run the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA). As I read the news, I pondered the question. Does Boris not know what Brian Coleman has been up to or does he just not care? Does Boris actually enjoy sticking two fingers up at "the little people"? As I understand it, Boris (along with David Cameron) was a member of the "Bullingdon club". As far as I can see, the whole point of this club is to make the lives of any "little people" who they come across as miserable as possible. The philosophy seems to be to be as horrible as possible and then show that you can get away with it because you are stinking rich.
Whilst it is pretty clear that David Cameron seems to have grown up, I can only conclude that Boris hasn't and he sorely misses the days of blissful mayhem. I've often pondered the question of how Boris actually views Brian Coleman. Whilst I can only speculate, I have a theory. I think that Boris Johnson has a "King Arthur" complex. That is why he's so keen on the Boris bus. It's his trusty chariot. He has his round table of advisers at the GLA. So where does Coleman fit in. He's the court jester, the naughty little boy who entertains Boris and winds up all of his other advisers. Boris, for all his sins, is fiercly intelligent and an avid student of history. Boris the lionheart is the boss. The rest of his Tory GLA members are his lackeys and bag carriers. After his own job and the Met Police chair, which Boris did till he got bored, the LFEPA is probably the best paid and most important. Firemen are universally liked, trusted and admired by Londoners. Boris knows this and views them like errant Knights of the realm. Useful when there's trouble in the realm, but troublesome the rest of the time. What better way to keep them in order than making the village idiot their boss. Boris knows that ultimately the firemen will do their job when they have to, but the obnoxious Coleman will wind them up no end in the meantime, and distract them from actually causing real trouble. Sure Coleman also embarrasses Boris and the rest of the Tories, but so what? When doddery old Aunty Flo takes off her knickers at the family get togethers, once you get over the embarrassment, it is actually rather funny.
The only trouble with Boris and his Camelotic view of the GLA is that we are living in London in 2010. The GLA isn't Camelot. It doesn't need a village idiot as its jester and fire chief. It needs competent people who know how to run complex administrations. Before Coleman took over at the LFEPA, I'd not heard of the organisation. It just got on with running the fire service. When I was canvassing, I spoke to several firemen and a couple of their mums. They were universal in their vitriolic disdain for Coleman. Why? Because Coleman has launched all sorts of petty rule changes, which are designed only to make the jobs of firemen more unpleasant. Beds where fire crew relax between callouts are being removed. Coleman has made sexist remarks in his role. He described a female Lib Dem MP as an airhead, for calling out the Fire Brigade when she thought her gas boiler was going to explode, even though the Brigade said she did the right thing. Coleman criticised the British Olympic Athletics team after the 2008 games, claiming they had "blood on their hands" because they competed in China. What about his own hands, following the cuts to the service which he's trying to push through?
Boris appointed Coleman in his first flush and has found him "good entertainment value". At the Met, Boris chaired the committee himself. When he got bored and couldn't be bothered anymore, he appointed boring old Kit Malthouse to run it. Malthouse, actually being a half decent administrator has got on with the job. As a result no one has heard of him. Is it too much to ask Boris to appoint a similar figure to the LFEPA? Let's just hope Boris tires of his clown.
Planet Earth to Boris, come in please - we need a Mayor who wants to sort our problems out. A Mayor who doesn't appoint people to important and well paid jobs, purely to amuse themselves and wind everyone else up. We want a Mayor who cares about all Londoners and who values brave public servants such as our Firemen. There is a time and place for clowns like Coleman. Sadly that time and place passed long ago.

Kit Malthouse needs to get himself a Willy !!!!!!
Margaret Thatcher once said that "everyone should have a Willy" You may think that this is a rather curious remark for the first female Prime Minister to make, but she was referring to her right hand man - William Whitelaw. What Lady Thatcher was actually saying was that Whitelaw was a steady hand, a voice of experience and reason. A man who's judgement could be trusted. Whenever she was tempted to act rashly, lash out in a knee jerk reaction, she would discuss it with Whitlelaw and he'd persuade her to temper her reaction.
So why do I think that Boris Johnson's Deputy Mayor, Kit Malthouse could do with a Willy? Well today there are not one, but two blogs on the Tory Troll blog, which suggest to me that a bit of calm, sensible advice over a nice cup of tea may be of use to Mr Malthouse.
First he is proposing that "all breeds of bull terriers" are summarily ceased in the United Kingdom. he want's to follow the draconian legislation enacted in Ontario, where all of these dogs are forced by law to be castrated. Any non compliance and the poor little doggies are taken of and put down. As the owner of a dog for many years, I know and any sensible dog owner will know that it isn't the dogs, it's the owners which make them aggressive. Sensible owners will generally neuter overly aggressive dogs. I'm all for a law which bans people from keeping dogs who are unfit owners, but to commit ethnic cleansing on the doggy population of London is a horrible concept. Mr Malthouse hasn't twigged that many Tory voters like dogs and this would be a massive vote loser at the election.
Just to make matters worse it seems that someone, shall we say, very, or even extremely close to Mr Malthouse has been leaving messages on the Tory Troll website. These "anonymous" messages are always rather supportive of Mr Malthouse. It's well worth clicking on the link to read the full story.
Now I wonder. If Mr Malthouse actually did have a Willy, what would his Willy say to him about these. I suspect Kit's Willy may have this message about his genocide for Dogs idea
"Kit, this is your Willy talking. Have a nice cup of tea. Sit down, relax, think it through. Many old dears who like the Tory party, like doggies even more. If you bring in your "gas chambres for doggies" idea, we'll loose thousands of ardent supporters, just when we need them most. If you want to deal with dangerous dogs, target the problem - bad owners - who no one will vote Labour to save".
And what would Kit's Willy advise him to do about his "rather close associates" leaving messages on nasty bloggers sites, using anonymous ID's?
"Kit, this is your Willy talking, have a nice digestive biscuit with that cup of tea. These Leftie bloggers are nasty people. They know all the nasty tricks of the internet and they love trying to catch honest, decent, upright people such as your good self out. If you see something you don't like, ignore it. Getting your "friends and very close associates" to post messages will only make you look rather silly."
Now as ever, being a dyslexic, I ran this by my good Lady to tell me if I'd made any terrible typo's. She tells me that Willy Whitelaw is actually a Willie !!!!!! She informs me that a Willy is a part of your anatomy !!!!! Even so, if I was Kit, I'd start listening to my Willy as I suggested, rather than talking through that other rather naughty bit of his anatomy, as he seems to be doing in his "gas the doggies" scheme. We wouldn't want him to end up looking like that even ruder bit of anatomy which Lady Thatcher had and Willie Whitelaw didn't, would we?

A nice night out - Brian Coleman style !

"Boris, Boris, wake up. Wake up Boris"
"Boris have a look at this, and this, and this, and this"
"It's fantastic. Four of our top GLA tories Roger Evans, James Cleverly, Kit Malthouse and Tony Arbour's expenses. Between these four a mere two taxi bills and one of those, for Tony Arbour is shared with Val Shawcross, Boris shall we call the Evening Standard and say what a virtuous bunch us Tories are"
Boris looks up at his new assistant with a dolefull, sad, world worn look "I'm afriad we can't possibly do that. You clearly haven't heard of our good friend Brian Coleman".
As regular readers will know, whilst the above four GLA Tories have managed 1 & 1/2 Taxi journeys between them at the public expense, Brian Coleman has managed rather more. Now you may think "Well if he's working hard, that is fine". We here at the Barnet Eye decided to have a closer look. Amongst the 37 taxi fares claimed on his GLA expenses (Click Here for the full list), these particularly caught my eye. I've put in a little cross reference against the Gifts and hospitality register to highlight exactly what events 2 of these 4 claims are for.
73.41 12/3/08 Taxi N2 & City Hall to Royal Albert Hall Sw7
81.07 12/3/08 Taxi Royal Albert hall to N2 & N3
40.02 15/3/08 Taxi N3 to Lords Cricket Ground NW8
15-MAR-08 Westminster Civic Dinner at Lord's Ground,
Marylebone, London NW8
58.77 15/3/08 Taxi Lords Cricket Ground to N2 & N3
62.40 29/3/08 Taxi N3 & N2 to Central London Synagogue
84.54 29/3/08 Taxi Central London Synagogue to N2 and N3
96.03 11/11/08 Taxi N2 & City Hall to Royal Albert Hall Sw7
11-NOV-08 Two tickets for Music for Youth Concert at the
Royal Albert Hall and refreshments
58.57 11/11/08 Taxi Royal Albert hall to N2 & N3
You may ask what is special about these journeys. Well it seems to me that not only are we paying for a Taxi for Brian Coleman, we are paying for one for a guest of his. You will notice that the journey back from all of these outings was to N2 & N3. It looks to me as if Brian's guest actually ran up more taxi fares at the public expense than several of the other top Tories put together. Maybe this is within the rules, maybe he's done nothing wrong, all I can say is that to me the whole thing stinks.
If you see Boris Johnson pass this message on from me "Wake up Boris, sack Brian Coleman before he fatally tarnishes your regime."
You are doing no favours whatsoever to the chaps listed above, who are completely blameless, yet are tarred by association. We in the London Borough of Barnet are lumbered with him for the time being. You can sack him at LFEPA any time you like. What are you waiting for?

Support your local Bobby !

There are reports that some local politician, who's name escapes me, has organised a Facebook page for everyone who thinks the Police are doing a marvellous job to leave messages. On the face of it, this is a rather nice idea. It seems that as there are reports that the said individual may have upset one of two people, who have now mounted a rather nasty campaign to hijack this site in an attempt to make the man look silly. Us here at the Barnet Eye, think the Police do a marvellous job. So much so that we even play football with a few of them.
Anyway if you think the Police do a great job, here's my suggestion to you. Rather than just leaving a message on a site which could be misinterpreted as the attempt of a local politician to make himself look good, click on this link to the Metropolitan Police Combined Benevolent Fund and make a donation. This is an organisation which looks after former members of the Police & there families who for various reasons are in need of assistance. I myself donated £20 to this cause, at the suggestion of London Assembly Member, Kit Malthouse, who I challenged to prove he was working at the Chelsea vs Arsenal FA Cup semi final. I suspect that there are many things I disagree with Kit about, but this is not one of them.
I couldn't let this blog pass without sharing my last two experiences of the Met Police with you. About 8 years ago, I'd just finished a band rehearsal and I was chatting outside my house to our old bassplayer. My road intersects with Mill Hill Broadway and opposite the entrance to our road is a butchers shop. A car parked in our road roared into life as we chatted. The driver then proceeded to drive straight across the Broadway, through the front of the Butchers shop. We ran down to see if the driver was OK, but as we approached, the smashed up car sped into life and drove off. We made our way to the shop, which was comprehensively wrecked and laughed when we saw the numberplate from the car, lying on the floor. My old bassplayer said "That's him nicked". I called the Police and reported the accident. I gave the car number and made my way home. Shortly after a policeman arrived at the door. He asked what happened and I explained. As I said how the car had shot through the shopfront he sarcastically said "You've got good eyesight". I asked what he meant. "He replied that to see the car number from my house, in the dark, I must have bionic eyes. I explained that I was actually quite shortsighted. He then asked how it was possible to get the car number at a distance of 200 yards. I replied explaining that the numberplate was still in the shop. Rather chastenedly he said "Oh". They called later to say that they'd caught the driver, who was blind drunk.
A few years before that incident, I was having a cup of tea with my then girlfriend (now wife) at the Everyman cinema cafe in Hampstead. As we were chatting, I noticed that the guy sitting behind her was doing something rather strange (what I couldn't see). I asked my her if she still had her handbag, as he got up. She said "Yes, why" I replied "Check". She then said "No, it's gone". At this I made after the thief. He ran down past the Three Horseshoes pub, turning dow the alley next door. Realising I was catching up, he threw down the bag & his jacket and turned back up. I collected them and carried on the chase. As he ran back past the pub, a group of mean looking skinheads joined the chase. As he reached the High St, two policemen intercepted him with a rugby tackle (much to the dispair of the bloodthirsty mob).
We went back to Hampstead Police station. It turns out that he was a professional bag thief, stealing 3 or 4 a day. He'd just been released from a three month jail term. The Policeman asked what I'd have done if he'd pulled a knife. I honestly hadn't considered that. After taking statements & assuring us that he was off to the cells, we went home. About a week later the phone rang. It was the arresting officer asking to speak to my girlfriend. After 5 minutes she came back to where I was sitting laughing. I asked if everything was OK. She replied "Yes". I asked what the PC wanted, she replied "He rang to ask me out for a drink".
You may wonder if I was upset, not a bit of it, I thought it was hilarious. In these days when the police are a political football, with politicians such as Boris Johnson using senior appointments to show his political muscle, I quite like the fact that at ground level they are are human like the rest of us.

Kit Malthouse and all that is wrong with Britain !
I posted this blog yesterday about Kit Malthouse receiving a ticket, lunch & drinks from the FA, for the Chelsea vs Arsenal FA cup semi final. Kit promptly posted the following response to my comments (see below). My first reaction was to that I respect a man who fights his corner & is prepared to engage in a bit of discussion. I said that if anyone could show that he'd done something useful by going, I'd donate £20 to the charity of his choice. As he's done that, I've just donated £20 to the MPBF (if Kit gets in touch, I'll email the receipt through).
Anyway, having paid my dues, I have to say that I think Kit's response exemplifies much of what is wrong with Great Britain in 2009. This isn't a personal criticism of Kit Malthouse, as if I take his response at face value, he actually did a few useful things for his ticket. Let me explain my concerns.
1. Kit mentions his involvement with Kickz. No problem their, a great scheme. It is good that politicians get involved in these things. He mentions the role Chelsea play in this scheme, again commendable. How can I criticise them? Well I first went to a football match in 1971 at Spurs, with a group of other boys. I was 8 or 9. The oldest boy in the group was 13. We took a 221 bus from Mill Hill & changed at Turnpike Lane. The cost of entry was easily affordable for a group of kids, some of whom were from relatively poor homes. Would such a thing happen with Chelsea's prices today, even if you could pay at the turnstile? Working class kids have been priced out of football. For many young adults the only way to economically watch the Premiership is in a pub. This cannot be right. I've been to the FA cup final once. I'm a Manchester City fan and I queued all night at the old Wembley for a ticket for the replay vs Spurs. No prawn sandwich brigade at that match, it was a real fans final. I hate the corporatisation of football, the empty seats at half time, the fact that people with no links to clubs are given tickets so that "decisionmakers" can be influenced.
2. Kit's comment about sitting next to the head of Football Licensing Authority & discussing a role for them in the Olympics. If this is how Boris Johnson's team are planning the Olympics, lord help us. What would have happened if he'd been sat next to the chairman of The Anne Summers group. What role would they have? It seems that the Olympics are being planned over a few beers on the back of fag packets. Was this really the first time a role for the FLA has been discussed?
3. The comments about the discussions with Wembley about planning issues. I have pretty strong views on a few planning issues. I'd love to have a chat with Kit about these, but I doubt I'll find myself sat next to him at a cup semi final any time soon. It seems a football ticket has given Wembley a bit of access that I am unlikely to get.
4. If the purpose of the visit was to see the control room during a match, this could easily have been arranged & the ticket given to a kid who'd never normally get the chance. Kit may think missing 1/4 of the game is a good thing. I think it's a criminal waste. The last time I went to Wembley was to watch the Man City Vs Gillingham 2nd Div play off final. I took my nephew & it cost me £250. Watched every second & worth every penny.
As to mystery shopping a few Police Officers. I doubt that the VIP enclosure at Wembley is the most challenging of environments. I'd suggest a trip, in fancy dress, down to the next G20 climate camp. I'm a supporter of the police, I play football with a few officers, great guys. I just think the Police should get praised when they do difficult jobs well, not rather easy ones.
As to Kit affording his own "Nosh & Booze", it begs the question, doesn't it? I love football. I spent the weekend at the Bognor Regis Festival of Football Tournament with my son's team, Watling Under 9's. The price of Kit's ticket, nosh & booze would have paid for a couple of the boys who's parents couldn't afford the price of the trip to go.
Don't get me wrong, if Kit rings me up and says "Here Rog, you have my ticket for the final" I'd be there like a shot (yup, you don't turn that down). I'd justify it by saying "I love football and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity" Trouble is, for too many people in positions of influence, it isn't a once in a lifetime experience. It's just another date in a busy diary.
Here's Kit's response in full.

Here's Kit's response in full.
The wonders of google blog alerts and your tempting offer of a charitable donation compel me to respond!
I accepted the offer of a ticket to the match for a few reasons:
1. I was happy to support Chelsea in a crucial match for them. As a team in my constituency they are a really conscientious community participant and they deserve encouragement and recognition. In particular they run an excellent "Kickz" diversion programme for young people (www.kickz.org.uk) - and I was honoured to be invited to launch this scheme for the club last year.
2. I sat next to the Chairman of the Football Licensing Authority who deal with stadium safety and we discussed a role for the FLA in the Olympics - a meeting is being called to discuss this vital work further as a result.
3. I also sat next to the Chairman of Wembley Stadium and discussed various issues around the planning environment. As a result a meeting is now planned with him and the chairman of the FA Lord Triesman to try and move things along around the area.
4. Most importantly for me, the visit meant I was able to see for myself the control room and security in operation during such a huge match, and to attend the half time police briefing (which meant I missed half of the second half). I met the police team in charge on the day and was able to give them my and the Mayor's personal thanks for the great work they do on a voluntary basis.
For what its worth I also "mystery shopped" several police officers during my journey from central London - all were very polite and wearing ID numbers.
For the record, I am a Liverpool supporter and I can afford my own "nosh and booze" thanks.
Payment to the Metropolitan Police Combined Benevolent Fund - you can make it online at:

Kit Malthouse working hard for his constituents.

Rather intrigued by the wording on Kit Malthouse's latest entry on the Mayor and Members Register of Gifts and Hospitality -
Kit Malthouse
18-APR-09
Drink, lunch and a ticket at the FA Cup Semi-Final in support of my constituents, Chelsea FC
Provided by The Football Association
Can this be translated as saying "being a GLA member is great because you can blag tickets to your favourite Footbll team, when they play at Wembley" or have I just totally misinterpreted the entry?
I suppose that as GLA members don't get a free second home, they probably feel entitled to the odd freebee.
Anyway, if I've got this wrong & Kit was doing vital work whilst quaffing free nosh & glugging free booze at the Semi, please let me know & I'll apologise & Donate £20 to the charity of his choice.
