The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 21st August 2022

I've had a bit of a strange week. Got back from France on Monday, four days later than I intended, as my daughter had to isolate due to French Law. Went to see one of my reggae heroes, King Yellowman at the Jazz Cafe on Tuesday. The less said the better. He had throat cancer and let's just say his voice has suffered. It was profoundly upsetting.  One Friday, I had a great evening at The Bohemia in Finchley with my band the False Dots and my great mates The Silencerz. Yesterday was spent recovering. A wonderful evening. Here is a snippet, the Burnt Oak Boogie

How was your week? This is what the esteemed Tweeters of Barnet have been up to.

1. And whilst on the subject of Burnt Oak, did you know it was once independent of Edgware?

2. This looks interesting

3. A little bit of Cricklewood history

4. Interested in local military history? A date for the diary

5. Nice mini thread here

6. We mentioned the Bohemia earlier. Why not nip along and check this out? These guys are good

7. Only at Hadley Fc, we have a drought but the first game of the season is cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch

8. Donald is always worth a follow!

9. When I heard about the Brent Cross Berach, didn't realise it was this good!

10. Sad to post, but if we catch them I'll be delighted

That's all folks!

The Tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 17th July 2022

We had a break from the Tweets of the Week last week. The country was going Boris Bonkers and there was genuinely not enough interesting tweets to make a list. It happens occasionally when everyone is obsessing on a single subject. This week, all of that pent up wonderfulness has been released! This weeks selection has been pretty good.

As to my week, it has been wonderful so far. Tuesday night, a great local football derby between Edgware Town and Hadley, Thursday I saw Reggae Legend Eek-A-Mouse at the Jazz Cafe, Friday it was Mill Hill legends The Polecats in Harrow and last night we went to see Jerusalem with Mark Rylance at the Prince of Wales Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, which was wondeful and reminded me of my misspent youth! Here’s a taste of Eek a Mouse

Anyway enough of that, here's my selection.

1. Lets start with a very nostalgic trip on the Midland Mainline through Cricklewood, Hendon and Mill Hill in 1960 on one of the then brand new Diesel Multiple Units. I always thought of these as smelly, clapped out, ready for the scrapyard trains, it's easy to forget that todays scrapper is yesterdays leading edge! Tweets like this are the reason I've not ditched Twitter years ago. If you can filter out the rubbish it is rather wonderful

2. This week's big shout out is for the Welsh Harpies. I love the fact that there is a "bomb crater pond" at the Welsh Harp. Would love to learn more about this, when did the bomb land?

3. I'm endebted to HowMichael for reminding me of the Capital Ring walk. Maybe I will do this one day, but not this week! It's too hot - More here https://www.alltrails.com/trail/england/london/capital-ring--2

4. Well done to the Phoenix. We need more of this! Showcases for local talents

5. If you want to get listed, posting pictures taken at the back of my house is a good way. My garden is visible in these (if you know where to look). I have fond memories of the Bridge installation in 1966(?) being loaded by a massive crane. I watched it with my Mum's Auntie Mary, who had  come down from Oldham, I was probably four years old. I thought the M1 was super duper!

6. A Mill Hill Landmark returns from his holidays. St Joseph has come home. St Joseph is a very suitable saint for Mill Hill, because although he is revered by Christians, he was never one himself, remaining Jewish. I do wonder if like most Dad's he'd get frustrated with his son "Come on Jesus, stop praying and do the washing up and tidy your room". His statue on St Josephs is loved by all in Mill Hill. I'd love to see them illuniate it, as they did during the millenium year.

7. Some wonderful pictures from one of the Borough of Barnets best tweeters.

8. Commuting on Thameslink? This may be of interest. Robin is the Network Rail top dog for our local bit of line

9. A great Dad joke from the Childs Hill Police. this is proper public service tweeting

10. Don't you think this looks great?

That's all folks!

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 15th May 2022

So how has your week been? I saw my team win the cup final! No, not the Scousers, the Mighty Hadley FC, the oldest club in the Borough of Barnet! (more of that later). It was my son's birthday, so had a wonderful Chinese meal at The Good Earth. I posted the most read blog for two years about traffic mayhem and we had a couple of days on the South Downs, walking with the doggies!

1. So here's a question, should we reopen the old FInsbury Park to Edgware railway? Or at least part of it. I think it would make sense to reopen the line to Copthall and the StoneX stadioum

2. This was my highlight of the week. @Hadleyfc won the Spartan SML League cup, in a thrilling match. The highlights are well worth watching, a couple of cracking goals.

3. It is good to see that at last the Railway in Edgware has been cleaned up. Lets hope this is a sign of things to come

4. Our friends at @Time_NW tell us that this is their most popular tweet ever. That is something. They've posted some crackers

5. We were having some fun in Mill Hill yesterday. The Inside Mill Hill team have done an amazing job getting people out to enjoy the fun in the sun

6. I love a local spy mystery story

7. How could you not love this tweet!

8. Looking for something to do this afternoon? This is wonderful

9. Do you want a cracking night out, listening to Britains finest funksters!

10. Rock and Roll in the heart of Mill Hill!

That's all folks!

The Tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 21/11/2021

How's your week been? Mine has been pretty spiffing! Last night I saw one of the best gigs I've seen in a very long time. The legendary Average White Band at The Royal Festival Hall, who definitely still have it and can get even the most sedate of venues audiences on their feet.

On Friday I saw Joe Stilgoe at Pizza Express at Soho and tonight it's my old mate Zoe Rahman at Frith Manner school. All of these are part of the rather amazing London Jazz Festival. That's enough of me, what have the Tweeters of the London Borough of Barnet been up to?

1. I have a rule that I don't use this feature for making political points and I don't feature tweets from outside of the Borough of Barnet, but I will break it today. I saw this tweet and I was genuinely thrilled to see that Burnt Oak Market was returning. I then noticed that it wasn't the Burnt Oak market we all know and love. It was being staged by Harrow on their side of Burnt Oak High Street and rather oddly, they don't appear to be working with Barnet Council, who run the other side of the road. Really? Why can't these two organisations get together and make a proper event and when will we see a return of the real Burnt Oak market, that was the centre of the Burnt Oak community for decades. I'd love to see Barnet Council using it to encourage young entrepreneurs to start small businesses. Many of our best loved retailers started out as market stalls. Rant over

2. I think this is a wonderful picture of the former BR station at Edgware in 1956. This is now the Broadwalk shopping centre. It was a real act of vandalism to remove the link between Edgware and Mill Hill East and not encorporate it into the Northern Line. If it was open today, there would be a station at the StoneX stadium, negateing the need for a fleet of diesel powered buses to get the fans to the stadium, it would provide a useful interchange with Thameslink at Mill Hill and make travel across the Borough of Barnet far more straightforward.

3. IS this the worst and most dangerous bit of driving we have recorded on our local twitter feeds?

4. Did you know that bombers were made in Cricklewood in 1942? You do now!

5. Whilst we are in that neck of the woods, A major campaign to move freight from road to rail was recently launched in Cricklewood

6. Always enjoy contributions from Reel Streets

7. I'm gutted I missed this, it looked wonderful!

8. MR Amies has us very worried there for a minute. Not in Barnet, but a favourite post match dinner venue for many Barnet FC fans. I've been going since 1982. The slow cooked lamb shank is to die for, you have to order it 24 hours before.

9. We love the Welsh Harpies, you get to meet some really fun guys if you join them! (groan)

10. Nice!

That's all folks

The Tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 11/04/2021

Are you looking forward to the grand reopening of pubs tomorrow* (* conditions may apply)? Personally, I might just have a quiet night in. Can't have too much excitment! As we await this big moment, you may ask what our wonderful Tweeters have been up to. Wonder no more. There has been some excellent Tweeting this week! Luckily in the Borough of Barnet, whilst we do get the odd outbreak of whelk brained nonsense of Twitter, most of what I see is top notch!

1. We start with one of our top local heroes getting some of the recognition they thoroughly deserve. Congratulations to Romel and the team!

2. Onto another one of our community favourites, Mr Mark Amies, BBC London's Industrial Heritage contributor and local pub Champion, with an update on the campaign to save the Railway Hotel in Edgware

3. This is an absolutely wonderful tweet from our unofficial local wildlife correspondent. I've walked the Valley many times and never seen one!

4. And another great sunset picture from Mark Warren at the @InsideMillHill account

5. Fancy watching our local team in action in the FA Vase next Saturday. This should be a great game

6. And whilst we are doing football, a nice tribute to HRH Prince Phillip RIP from the boys at @EdgwareTownFc

7. A great picture from one of our finest local singers

8. Hat's off to these amazing local citizens

9. St Pauls are just one of dozens of local churches, synagogues, mosques and other community groups doing great work. A big thank you to all of them

10. Nice to see our friends at Mill Hill Golf club swanning around again!

That's all folks!

The Tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 31/1/2021

We are already one twelfth of the way through the year, can you believe it. Time flies when you are, um, er, well you know. Despite the lockdown, we have an interesting and eclectic mixture of Tweets this week. So without further ado...

1. Mill Hill's favourite Irish resident has been granted the Freedom of the City of London. we look forward to the Morris Minor being loaded with his sheep for the Lord Mayor's Parade

2. Need a covid test? Here are the local testing centres

3. I've played football on these fields many times, but I don't ever remember them looking like this. I used to love the cold wind whipping off the Welsh Harp whilst putting a crunching reducer tackle. Those were the days

4. A classic British response!

5. Another great wildlife shot from Samuel Levy. It's amazing what is on our doorstep

6. This is a great community initiative in Cricklewood

7. Some great music from Golders Green Hippodrome back in the day. Billy Duffy is one of our fave guitarists.

8. A sad moment for all of us football fans. Not Barnet but close enough by to warrant inclusion

9. This is a great tweet. I love the fact that we are now sharing our collections via Twitter

10. Who didn't want one of these when they were a nipper?

That's all folks!
