Is Bob Crow a complete twat?

I was out drinking beer last night. Much too much of the stuff. One of my drinking buddies offered the opinion that "Bob Crow is a complete twat". Now in the alchoholic daze, I'd forgotten about it this morning. My friend feels that the Leader of the RMT is an "ignorant git who is bent on causing trouble".

I guess my mate isn't alone in his views. He feels that the biggest problem with the railways is Mr Crow. Then I read this in my favourite paper, the Guardian today.

The "improved" franchise regime being sought by the Association of Train Operating Companies should fill rail users with dread (Letters, 7 July). Atoc represents the combined interests of shareholders who have been the beneficiaries of massive corporate welfare in the form of more than £11bn in public subsidy in the last 10 years. Rail franchising remains essentially a crude device for converting public money into private profit – approaching £400m across the Tocs for the most recent financial year – to the detriment of rail users and workers.
The investment boasted of by Atoc comes from fare-payers and taxpayers – the private sector's most notable contribution is to siphon money out of the industry. Now we are a Con-Dem nation, Atoc is baying to be given more of the public funds, in the form of longer franchises and what they call "vertical integration" – which would amount to rail infrastructure being fragmented and divvied up among the private operators to be sweated for even more profit. Atoc's demands need careful interpretation: for "drive down costs" read "remove guards and station staff, and downgrade safety to maximise profits"; and for "a commercially rigorous approach" read "ringfence our profits while hammering passengers and rail staff". This is the reverse of what should happen. Franchising isn't the solution – it's part of the problem.

Couldn't have put it better myself. For those of us lucky enough to use the rotten service provided by First Capital Connect, we already know that these awful TOC's (train operating companies) are only interested in profits. They know that passengers are only there to be bled dry and treated like cattle.

They know that owning a rail franchise is a license to print money and the government doesn't care how badly you do it. If they did, they would have stripped First of the Thameslink franchise last year when they weren't employing enough drivers to run the service, resulting in a near 50% reduction in services and appalling punctuality stats.

I am deeply suspicious of any organisation which represents the interests of TOC's. The interests of TOC's are most certainly not the interests of passengers.

Anyway, who do you think wrote the letter to the Guardian? None other than Bob Crow. I'm not a member of his fan club, but anyone who has suffered from the trials and tribulations of FCC's Thameslink knows that whilst Unions cause some problems, incompetent management cause far worse ones. Bob Crow earns £103,000 per annum to represent his members. Moir Lockhead, boss of First Group gets paid £802,000 per annum to run a train service. Which one is the more overpaid? Which one has helped Great Britain's railways prosper and the passengers get to their destination on time? Sadly, despite the fact that these two earn just short of a million quid a year between them, you won't get any answers from either of them as to what they will be doing to ensure that the people who pay both of their wages (the passenger) will get a good deal.

Sadly for Great Britain PLC, whilst we have the likes of Moir Lockhead running companies like First Capital Connect, we'll have the likes of Bob Crow running the Unions. And that my friend, is why we are all F*****D. Have a nice weekend.

First Capital Connect : First class fare for a third class journey

There is a very interesting report in the Daily Express today -  http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/177412/First-class-train-ticket-con - detailing how rail companies are charging First class ticket prices for routes where there is no first class service. Can you guess which company was described as one of the main culprits? None other than our beloved First Capital Connect. When asked how they could justify selling first class tickets from Luton to Wimbledon, when no trains have first class accomodation. A First Capital Connect spokesman said:
“It is perfectly feasible for the entire national rail journey from Luton Airport Parkway to Wimbledon to be carried out in first class. FCC tickets to Wimbledon all include cross London travel for people who decide not to travel on a direct service, therefore the suggestion that an additional fare needs to be paid is incorrect.”
So you are at Luton Airport Parkway, you have a load of bags and you want to get to Wimbledon in comfort and without stress. You know the service can get overcrowded so you buy a First Class ticket. Is there anyone who believes that you'd want to change trains, maybe several times?

The article says that the ticket for the non existant services is charged at £21.40, rather than £13.40 for a Second class ticket. I have this question for First Capital Connect. How much should the fare be for a Third Class Service. One where trains are late, don't turn up, are too packed to board. I thought I'd visit my old friend, the First Capital Connect Journey check board. What joys did it have in line for us today?
Line problem in the Blackfriars area.
Train services between Brighton and St Pancras International are being disrupted due to signalling problems in the Blackfriars area.
Engineers are working as fast as possible to restore services to normal. Delays of up to 20 minutes can be expected.
Trains are being diverted via Streatham and will not serve London Bridge.
Services will go via Streatham and not call at London Bridge until further notice. Southern Railway are accepting FCC tickets on all reasonable routes.

Line problem.
Train services on all routes via Shortlands are being disrupted due to signalling problems.

So if the 2nd class fare is 62% of the first class fare, surely the third class fare should only be £8.40? Do we get a 38% reduction on our season tickets for the third class service? No of course we don't. Why? Because if there is one thing which is First class about First Capital Connect it is the renumeration package for their bosses such as Moir Lockhead.  You can click here to get the full details of his package :-
Let me give you a summary as reported

Now there are a few things you can do. There is a number 10 petition to strip this awful company of its franchise. It only has a week left to run. It is 46 signatures short of 6,000. Please sign now if you haven't already. Please ask any fellow victims of this company to sign it if they haven't

There is also a facebook group, where we keep an eye on the issues related to this company

Then there is the First Crapital Connect noticeboard.
If you have a problem with this line, please log it on one of these sites, it makes it far easier to collate information to  write blogs, letters to MP's etc if we know what they are up to. Given the new Government is a coalition and there is a possibility that there may be another election in short order if it all goes pear shaped, I think that now is an excellent time to keep up the pressure.

"Do you want to lose the franchise like First Capital Connect?"

There is a simple reason for commuters on the Thameslink route having to suffer the daily tribulations that are inflicted upon them by this awful company. That reason is because their no 1 priority is to ensure huge cash returns for their directors bonuses and their shareholders dividends. Every time any measure is proposed which may improve the daily lot of passengers is proposed, chairman Martin Gilbert and CEO Moir Lockhead ask this question "What benefit does this deliver to the shareholders of First Group PLC?". If it can't be shown to increase profits, then the suggestion will be ignored. That is why First Group have a professional asset manager as their chairman. He knows how to find the G-spot of investors and knows how to keep the share price high.

The hard pressed passengers have a unique opportunity to change this equation at the moment. We can change it for all passengers of every train company across the country. We need the government to sack First Capital Connect for failure to deliver a proper service. There is an election approaching on the 6th May and the line passes through many marginal constituencies. This is one of the few times when politicians might actually listen to the people, the voters. If Lord Adonis were to sack First Capital Connect, this would have a massive impact across the country. Rail operators would sit up and take note. They would realise that passengers must be considered. When the question "What benefit does this deliver to the Shareholders?" is asked, the answer will come straight back "Do you want to lose the franchise like First Capital Connect?". You see First Group PLC pocket massive profits from the line. Losing the franchise will hit them where it hurts. It will send a strong message to all of the other companies. Let us not forget that all of the problems with the system have been caused entirely by bad management.

They are indulging in a massive PR operation to try and save the franchise and hope the protests go away. The truth is that unless they are stripped of the franchise, they will think they've got away with it. Removing the franchise will send a shot across the bows of all train operating companies, saying "get your house in order". Anything less will just perpetuate the existing status quo, where passengers are the last consideration for the Government and the Train companies.

First Capital Connect Update

Firstly, for anyone who missed the ITV London Reports story on First Capital Connect last night, here it is (thanks to Don't Call Me Dave at Not The Barnet Times for the clip) - Enjoy.

Next up, remember that First Capital Connect said that the days of 4 carriage trains were a thing of the past? We'll I just checked the First Capital Connect journey check website (at 17:45) and saw these affecting Mill Hill Broadway :-
16:44 St Albans City to Sutton Surrey due 18:08
This train will be formed of 4 coaches instead of 8.

As for the petition to terminate the Franchise. It now has 4,726 signatures and has risen to the 26th most popular petition in the country.

One other thing I found out today. I was rather interested in who actually runs First Group PLC, the parent company for First Capital Connect. We've already looked at the CEO Moir Lockhead and his compensation package. I thought I'd see what the Chairman, Martin Gilbert brings to the group. If you click on this link, you'll see an impressive array of chairmanships etc on Mr Gilberts CV. He is the CEO of Aberdeen Assett Management, where he's worked since 1983. What amazed me (maybe I'm just naive or stupid), but he seems a bit light (shall we say) on experience of running transport companies. He looks like a great guy to manage your assets though. Could this be why First is so much better at looking after it's directors and shareholders than it's passengers?

When will the penny drop and Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Transport Minister Lord Adonis realise that the people who should run railways are people who understand railways?

The end of Crapital punishment

Are you sick of the awful service level provided by rail operator First Capital Connect? I am. I've had enough of travel chaos. I've had enough of turning up for a train and finding that they've all been cancelled. I'm fed up of getting messages from my staff at the studio telling me they can't get into work because all the trains are cancelled. I'm fed up going to get a train, finding it cancelled, waiting for hours on end as trains too full to board stop and I can't get on, whilst other half empty trains zoom past Mill Hill. I'm fed up with excuses. Most of all, I'm fed up with the fact that Moir Lockhead, the managing director of First Group said in an update that the train operations were performing well. This man gets over a quarter of a million pounds in renumeration for running this awful service.

If you feel like me then it is time to do something. Sign the No 10 Downing Street petition, which I've put a link to in the sidebar. It's a simple process. You click on my link, you enter your name and address. You click the button, then you receive an email from No 10 website, which you reply to and you're done. It costs nothing and the more people who sign this, the more the Government will take notice. If the Government sack First Group from the Thameslink franchise, then all of the other rail companies will sit up and take note. We may all get a better service. Now, I've written countless blogs about this. I'm asking a little favour of you. Please would you email any friends you know with the details of the petition. Either put a link to this blog or direct to the petition in an email. There is an election soon. Many of the seats which First Capital Connect pass through are marginals, so the Government are more likely to take note now. If you can't be bothered, don't moan next time you are stuck for hours on a platform, as your train is delayed for hours. Let these greedy fat cat companies know that we won't take poor service for one day longer.

Picture : The Image First Capital Connect would like to portray. You may notice that rather interestingly there are no passengers in the picture, which sums up their attitude.

First Capital Connect Passenger Bulletin : "Up Yours Matey!"

********** Important Update 2 *************
Just checking the stats and noticed a few people in Westminster have been looking at this blog today. I wonder if this has anything to do with Lord Adonis suddenly deciding to criticise First Capital Connect on the BBC - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=2239285772 - ??????
********** End of Update 2 ****************

********** Important Update ***************
I've noticed a large number of hits from the I hate First Capital Connect Website. I've put a link to this and a couple of other relevant groups in the sidebar. If you are disattisfied please sign the No 10 petition. There is an election coming up and if enough people sign it, then they may take note. As of today there are 2,650 signatures. I will provide regular updates on this
********** End of Update *****************

First Group, the company which operates the Thameslink service issued a financial update yesterday. This is the company which has been completely unable to run the service listed in it's timetable for several months. Here's the key statement from the update.
"We are encouraged by the performance of our rail division which continued to deliver growth despite the clear effects of the recession on the UK's rail industry," chief executive Moir Lockhead said in a statement.
Here is the performance stats from their own website :-
 13 Dec-9 Jan            62.8%
 15 Nov-12 Dec         84.1%
 18 Oct-14 Nov          82.1%
 20 Sep-17 Oct           86.8%
 23 Aug-19 Sep          93.3%
 26 Jul-22 Aug           90.8%
 28 Jun-25 Jul            87.7%
 31 May - 27 Jun       91.3%

As you can see, Moir Lockhead, the bloke who runs this lamentable company is "encouraged by the performance" of the shambolic travesty of a company he's in charge of. Could this be because he trousers over three quarters of a million quid a year in "compensation".

Having completely failed to do his job, how can he stick a finger up at his customers so crassly. It is clear to me that there is only one solution. Strip FIRST Group of this and all of their other rail franchises. Lockhead clearly doesn't understand what is expected of someone who is charged with running a rail company. As I predicted previously, the disruption has had no negative effect on the finances of this company. The only people to suffer are the long suffering passengers. I could not believe that First Group think they are doing well. It is time for the Government to step in and take proper action. Gordon Brown has an opportunity to take decisive action and show that he is a tough leader. How can he not take action? Transport Secretary Lord Adonis must take action or resign. This article in "The Argus" sadly shows that Adonis is completely detached from reality. Adonis seems keener to make excuses for this lamentable company than to actually do anything for the hard pressed commuters. I fully agree with Lib Dem Peer Lord McNally, who I heard on BBC London demanding action against First Group. According to the Argus  :-
Liberal Democrat peers leader Lord McNally, speaking from the backbenches, had urged the Transport Secretary to consider whether franchise operator First Capital Connect was meeting its obligations following a series of problems.
Not for the first time in relation to this dispute, it seems to me that only the Lib Dems are taking the concerns of the travelling public seriously. It is Lord Adonis job to sort this sort of problem out. It is clear to me that he's just not interested.

First Capital Connect - How bad can a company be?

Yet again the hard pressed commuters of Mill Hill are suffering. It seems that First Capital Connect have discovered a new excuse for not being able to run a service. This time, it seems the snow has damaged their trains. There are two aspects of this I don't get. Firstly, these trains have been running since the mid 1980's. How on earth can they suddenly be susceptible to snow? Strange as it may seem, it has snowed in the last 25 years. Secondly, having used Thameslink since the line was first opened, I do actually remember when these trains were first introduced under British Rail. They all went wrong then, the first time its nowed. The excuse "The wrong type of snow". They said that the filters couldn't deal with fine snow. These were quickly replaced with more expensive filters that did the job.Could it be that First Capital Connect have gone back to using the cheap filters that caused the initial problem?

A quick look at the Thameslink website revealed this message
------------------------------------------------

Customer information: Monday 11 January 2010, 18:23

THAMESLINK ROUTE
Due to the weather we regret we can offer only a severely limited service today but there are 8 extra services this evening northbound from London and 4 services out of London on the Wimbledon/Sutton loop. Buses are in operation to alleviate overcrowding
------------------------------------------------
Surely the time has come for the Government to say to First Group that "enough is enough". They make a handsome profit running this service, which is redistributed to shareholders. If the line was taken back into public hands, then the money could be spent on upgrading the service. First have completely undermined the argument that privatised companies can run a train service more efficiently than a nationalised company. British Rail ran the service for years and we never had the mayhem we've had in the last few months then. The only measure First Capital Connect works on as a company is to deliver huge dividend to shareholders and huge renumeration packages to the directors such as Moir Lockhead.

Farce Crapital Corrupt - The worlds worst railway company

Please forgive me. This is just a rant. Mondays are bad enough for some of us, without inept, incompetent Railway operators to make our life a misery. I had the joy of making two journeys on the worlds worst service. I thought I'd get an "early" train , to avoid the worst of the rush. I got the 07.47 from Mill Hill. This train was one of those not cancelled in the new "emergency" timetable.

Now I always thought that an emergency was something that was unforeseen and unexpected. If you run a rail company, and you rely on drivers working overtime to actually run the service, is it unexpected if they get awkward when they are told they are not getting a payrise. The managing director of the parent Company, Moir Lockhead lives in a castle in Scotland and get's £800,000 a year "compensation" for running the service. Did he think to himself when ASLEF kicked off? "I can't believe it, these rail unions are taking action, what a surprise" as his butler brought him tea and scones.

Anyway back to my journey. The 07:47 arrived 5 minutes late, packed to the rafters. Of the dozen or so people waiting by the door I was standing at, I was one of the lucky 5 to get on. Packed like sardines, we trundled along, stopping at Hendon, Cricklewood, West Hampstead and Kentish Town, leaving people on the platform as we passed through. They were consoled by a 45 minute wait for the next service, which was undoubtedly even busier.

A fellow passenger said as we got off at City Thameslink "How much worse could this be?". Well if she got the 17:44 back again (arrived 5 minutes late) she would know. It seems that not only are they lacking in drivers, but they are lacking in carriages. You would think that if they weren't running services, they could at least make sure that the trains were 8 carriages long. Oh no, you see the 17:44 was only four carriages. It was packed when it arrived at City Thameslink. A truly awful trip back to Mill Hill ensued. As we disembarked, a respectable looking City type announced at the top of his voice "If they try and check my ticket tonight, I'll stab them". You see unlike Moir Lockhead, who sits in his Scottish Castle counting his stock options, his staff (those not on £800,000 per year) take the brunt of his decisions. They get the zero percent payrise, they get the Ire of the passengers. There is a letter in tonights Evening Standard, suggesting that by paying less overtime and running shorter trains, the company is making even more profit.  Is this true? I've no idea, but I do know this. If Gordon Brown wanted to make himself popular, he would strip all of these awful companies of their franchises. Many people in London are out of work. Train them up as train drivers and get rid of the need for excessive overtime. I'd like to see all commuter services, buses, trains and tube under the mayor.

As for the greedy bosses, I'd like to see them thrown in the workhouse.

Rant Over

First Capital Connect - Daylight robbery

Just to make a rotten day even worse. As if it wasn't bad enough that First Capital Connect cost me half a days income by not running a train service from Mill Hill this morning, they are now robbing me of £20 for travelling on their trains. My crime? I left a weekly season ticket at home. Their excuse for this robbery? It was the third time I'd done it in a 12 month period.

The mere fact that I'd produced a copy of the ticket on each occasion didn't matter. I'd also complied with the terms of an act of Parliament by offering to purchase a ticket (mostly to save this hassle and aggravation).

I've attached a copy of a letter from the "Independent Penalty Fares Appeals Service" so you can have a read. How Independent is this appeals service?  If you look at the bottom you will see that is says "London and South Eastern Railways Limited t/a IPFAS". Who operates Blackfriars Station?

I'd not noticed this before. I'd naively thought that the IPFAS was an INDEPENDANT panel with the best interests of the passenger at heart. As you can see, it is a branch of one of these dreaded TOC's - Train Operating Companys. It is just a mask for a Limited Company seeking to maximise it's profits.

If anyone out there knows how to overturn this scandalous example of Daylight robbery, please EMAIL ME BY CLICKING HERE.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, lets clear up a few issues :-

Did FCC lose any money by me forgetting my ticket? No
Did I produce a copy for the "IPFAS"? Yes
Could someone else have borrowed it that day? No, it has a photocard and my photocard no printed on the ticket. I'd just left it at home
Why had I forgotten it twice in the last 12 months previously? Well actually I've had a rather stressfull time. My wife's mum died of lung cancer and I've really not been myself, but hey who cares about that.

My gripes?
1. The IFPAS isn't an independent appeals panel. It is a subsidiary of a rail company
2. It offends natural justice to fine people who have bought a ticket and are forgetful
3. First Capital Connect have all my details on their computer. They could have checked that I'd bought a ticket. They didn't
4. There is no higher authority to appeal to. This whole system is outside of the courts & English law.
5. This undermines the Railways act, which is an act of Parliament that says all you have to do is offer to pay the fare, unless there is a deliberate attempt to defraud the railway

No wonder Moir Lockhear,MD of FCC got a payrise in the middle of a recession

First Crapital Connect - Everything that's wrong with Great Britain today

The Tragedy of Thameslink

There are many things I love about living in Mill Hill. One of the less fantastic aspects is the fact that the rail service many of us rely on is run by a company which doesn't seem to know what it's doing. In the "bad old days" of British rail, there were 8 trains per hour to London during rush hour. Four of these were fast and the journey time was approx 10 minutes. The then Conservative government had a brilliant idea. They'd privatise the railways. At least when Maggie Thatcher privatised things she gave people the chance to earn a few bob out of the process by selling the shares to the general public at a discount, so those of us with a bit of spare cash could make a few bob. The rail privatisation didn't even gig such a nod to the owners (ie us). Assets were virtually given away. As a result we got Thameslink. The company operating this services, Govia, did a lousy job. As a result season ticket holders at Mill Hill, used to get a big discount. When the franchise was up, we all breathed a sigh of relief. A new company took over. Thameslink became First Capital Connect. The first thing they did was get rid of the automatic discount for season ticket holders. Now if your train is late, you have to apply for a refund. As this is far too much hassle for most people, they've made a fortune in savings.

They've also brought in penalty fares. Again they are making a fortune on these, because people who don't travel regularly get caught out time an again at Mill Hill because although you can get on a train at many stations with your Pay as you go Oyster card, when you get off you can't use it. As such you either get the full monty for not touching out, or you get caught by inspectors and handed a £20 penalty fare. In other words you get scammed.

They've now found a new way to make your life miserable. I just read this report on the BBC which says they can't even find enough drivers to run a Sunday service on part of the route. Does the managing director of First, Moir Lockhead get fined a penalty fare for every passenger left stranded?

As to it's performance. In February this year, nearly 1 in 4 trains was late (5 or minutes late) and in July more than 1 in 10 was late. What is quite stunning was the fact that whilst I was researching this blog, I discovered that they HAD TO BORROW trains to run their timetable earlier in the year !

Now I don't claim to know anything about running a railway, but come on, if you publish a timetable you should know how many trains you need.

Back to my original point. In the "bad old days" of British Rail, we had 8 trains an hour from Mill Hill at rush hour. How many do we have now - 5. Has the cost of travel got cheaper? Nope, it's gone up in real terms. Is there less overcrowding? Nope, it's got worse. Is it easier to get to? It used to take 3 minutes to walk from Kings Cross Thameslink to the tube. It now takes nearly 10 minutes. The hours at the ticket office have been cut. So you undeniably pay more and get less. Who has benefitted from this awful company running the operation?

I had a look at Moir Lockhead's executive profile. I found that his renumeration package was as follows :-
