The Tweets of the Week in the London Borough of Barnet - Revisited

For around ten years, I used to do a feature every Sunday called The Tweets of the Week in the London Borough of Barnet. When it started, it was extremely popular, thousands of views every week and I connected with a whole bunch of wonderful people, some of whom I now consider friends. I did a set sequence of searches as well as keeping a note of any good tweets throughout the week. When Elon Musk took over twitter, the number of interesting factual tweets and great pictures dropped. It got to the point where I couldn't find enough interesting content to fill the slot. Elon Musk also limited the number of results that you got, meaning searches revealed nothing. Once I realised what was going on, I decided that it wasn't worth promoting his platform.

In the week, I had a chat with one of my former regulars, Mark Amies. I mentioned that I rarely look at Twitter now, there is little of interest. After our chat, I thought I'd have a look. Was there anything worth Posting?  The searches I used to do were all related to neighbourhoods in Barnet. I'd search Mill Hill, Edgware, Burnt Oak, Finchley, Golders Green Brent Cross, Colindale, Hendon and Cricklewood.

So lets see -

Mill Hill - A nice thread of posts from the Mill Hill Hostorical Society.

Edgware - This would definitely be featured, Mark Amie still chasing the demise of the Railway pub in Edgware. Sadly Labour replacing the Tories in Barnet has made no difference at all

Barnet - Nice!

Burnt Oak - A notable anniversay a couple of weeks ago, a great tweet

Finchley - This is right up my street, I'll watch this later!

Golders Green - Just the type of stuff that I started using Twitter to see.

Brent Cross - The only search that threw up nothing of much interest to me

Colindale - Sadly the Colindale Folk club is no longer in Colindale, but it's still in the Borough of Barnet

Hendon - Congratulations to Hendon on progressing to the next round of the FA cup. Cricklewood - I didn't know Phil Lynott had a flat in Cricklewood, fine tweeting here. Also loved the Caty Delmot tweet.

So there you go. It seems that there is life on Twitter still and some good stuff out there. Was I too hasty? I will monitor for a couple of weeks.

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 29th October 2023

As ever, we start with a quick round up of my week, how has your week been? I've been busy! Monday had a rather nice curry in Brick Lane and a pint in the Blind Beggar. Without wishing to make a politcal point, we did have a discussion abou the Palestinian flags on every lamp post. When I first started working in that area in the 1980's, it was still a relatively Jewish area, with some amazing bagel shops. Things change. Wednesday had a band rehearsal, Friday celebrated my nephews recent wedding. And last night,,,,,

1. It's always nice when you put on a show and someone appreciates it.

2. This post had to be included. The tweets of the week have been featuring Mark Amies posts about The Railway Hotel in Edgware for nearly a decade now. Sadly it seems no nearer a solution (other than the place burning down)

3. A date for your diary. The Colindale folk club in Barnet

4. Some tweets simply have to be included. Brilliant pic

5. Roger was a Mill Hill legend and his daughter Debbie is a very good mate of mine. RIP

6. Who knew that Crespigny Road was so exciting?

7.A bishop was in Burnt Oak

8.cA date for your diary

9. Nice autumnal pic

10. WE love a nice guitar!

That's all folks.

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 24th September 2023

Last week, I simply couldn't find ten tweets that I felt were interesting and varied enough to justify posting a tweets of the week. It happens sometimes. It is always rather disappointing. It does seem to me that less people are using the platform and less people are interested in it recently. There were a plethora of extremely dull local politicians standing in groups holding leaflets, claiming that they were given a warm welcome on the doorstep. Of course this is nonsense. I've done a fair bit of canvassing and most people don't even answer the door. The only really warm welcome you get is when people are happy to tell you your an idiot. Your own supporters will occasionally have a nice chat, long lost friends will greet you warmly, but most people just want to get on with their ironing or watching The Chase. I do wish local politicians would be a bit more imaganative in their tweeting.

As for my week, I had a nice curry on Weds and a couple of beers at the Mill Hill Services Club, that was about it. Anyway, enough waffle, here is what our more interesting tweeters have been up to.

1. I'll start with the one wonderful tweet from last week, that did deserve a platform. I love this

2. This blog has long supported the work Mark Amies has done to try and save the Railway in Edgware. Mark deserves an OBE for his work trying to preserve our heritage

3. Now this is what we call great tweeting.

4. One of the reasons I love this feature is because we learn about little bits of our locality like this!

5. If you want to get a tweet included here, a bit of local rock and roll history will always do the trick for me

6. If you love brutalist buildings illuminated in pink, this is the tweet for you. A shout out for the work these wondeful people do, saving lives.

7. Had to include this. It's wonderful

8. A date for your diary, raising money for a charity rather too close to my heart

9. Always worth a mention, the final resting place of British Rock and Roll legend. Lovely pics

10. And finally, keep an ear out for this forthcoming single by one of our fave local singers, who should be a megastar

And before we sign off, we thought you might enjoy a little snippet of my band, The False Dots, live at the Dublin Castle on Friday 15th. It was a real fun night, as I'm sure you'll see. Have a restfull Sunday (unless you are a Gooner or a Spurs fan, in which case, lets hope it's a good game)

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 10th September 2023

How has your week been? Mine has been OK, a very hot (as mentioned yesterday) but good rehearsal with The False Dots for our gig on Friday 15th. A thoroughly enjoyable trip to watch Hadley FC progress in the FA Trophy yesterday. Those were the highlights, but that's enough of me, what were our local tweeters up to. I hope you agree that this week we have a rather decent selection.

1. This caught my eye. I really must make the effort to check it out. I'd be fascinated to know what tracks are being spun

2.And whilst we are in Burnt Oak, this may interest you. This particularly caught my eye as one of my first adult jobs was manufacturing Bat detectors for Queen Mary College, for a global bat survey in 1982. I worked for a company called Physiological Instrumentation based in Delancy Passage in Camden.

3. This is a wonderful picture of Golders Green Station

4. As previously mentioned, a wonderful afternoon at Hadley FC, this was my pick of the goals

5. A very apt post for this week!

6. Thanks to the RAF museum for the cute pic of the week

7. Just a reminder, if you get a parking ticket unfairly, contact Mr Mustard

8. A date for your diary!

9. As ever, we love the work of our favourite cinema

10. Ands finally, some wonderful local history

And finally, The False Dots are playing at The Dublin Castle on Friday 15th September, please come down and say hi!

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 16th July 2023

I've had a wonderful week. The highlight was the BBC Northern Soul Proms last night. The BBC has it's detractors, but it has kept the UK at the very top of the league culturally and continues to do so. If you've never been to the Proms, check it out. It's not stuffy, how could it be with a Northern Soul night.

The only people who would want to see the end of such wonderful things are clearly people who hate the UK and probably hate themselves!

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, how's about the Tweeters of Barnet? Once again they've not failed us.

1. How could I not start with this wonderful tweet!

2. We've had some wonderful butterflies in our garden this week. Our good friend Don has seen a few around Edgware. Excellent tweeting

3. How could I not include this. The wonderful fire fighters of Finchley! Spiffing tweeting

4. I love this. I remember the prefabs at Cricklewood, next to the railway line, just south of the station. I felt quite sad when they were demolished, but then again I didn't have to live in one.

5.If you want to get included in this list, post something like this. I can remember being gutted that I missed this gig, only found out about it after the fact. George Thorogood is an absolute force of nature

6. One of our local legends. Used to be a teacher at my old school, Orange Hill.

7. Nice tweet from our friends at The Mill Hill Historical Society. Always wondered who John Keble was! Done quite a few shifts for the Mill Hill Homeless night shelter at the church.

8. Why indeed?

9. A fair question?

10. And to finish, some awful news. I am a Hadley FC season ticket holder. I knew Tony was unwell, but this is devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with Anthony and his family at this time.

Oh and being a shameless self plugger, please put the date in your diary and come down and see The False Dots on the 15th September at The Dublin Castle. This is what you'll get. If you like a bit of Ian Dury inspired slightly punky ska music, you'll love it

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of - 9th July 2023

With all the talk of Twitter falling to bits and rival services starting, it is small wonder that there are still so many excellent Tweeters in Barnet. This week, we have a wonderful selection for your delectations.

1. Lets start with this rather wonderful tweet. If you look, there are many things in Burnt Oak worth a look (more of that later)

2. Good to see that there is work to keep the Silk Stream in good shape.

3. It is almost criminal that this landmark was knocked down.

4. I saw one of these billboards and assumed it was an advert for underwear, not porn sites. Not really sure that porn should be advertised on High Street posters

5. Mark Amies @Time_nw account has long been a favourite here, here's another reason why

6. SOme wonderful pictures of Cricklewood

7. The Pre season has well and truly started for our favourite local team, the oldest in Barnet

8. I was honoured to meet the lady who runs this wonderful feed this week. They do excellent work

9. Community Focus is an amazing organisation. Check them out

10. Some musical fun in Mill Hill

That's all folks

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 14th May 2023

We skipped last week. With the Coronation, it seemed that everyone was a bit too distracted. But we are back with a vengeance this week. How's your week been? I had a Prostate biopsy on Friday, so I'm a bit sore and tired, but other than that OK. Her's a picture of me as they came to wheel me down to the choppers. I got told off for putting the surgical underpants on my head and taking selfies. As with everyting in life, you should seek to squeeze some fun out of the worst situations.

So without further ado, here's my selection of this weeks finest tweets from the esteemed tweeters of the Borough of Barnet

1. Lets start with some excellent news. For those of us with links to The Watling Estate this is quite fascinating

2. A shout out to these wonderful folk. One of many amazing groups in our Borough. We are lucky that we have people who care for our community and the more vulnerable members of it. This is, to me, the Coronation at it's best

3. This is rather good, have a read div>

4. Good to see the Finchley Choral society getting back to business

5. This is wonderful, if you are at a loose end, come on down.

6. This is wonderful, I am so proud to have helped to put this together, just sorry I couldn't attend as I was in the operating theatre!

7. Another shout out for another wonderful community group

8. A nice bit of Childs Hill history from Mark Amies

9. This was a wonderful night, included as we didn't do TOTW last week

10.And finally, make sure you check this out

Given what my week has been like, here's a little public health announcement I'd love to share with you. Please listen to the words carefully.

The tweet of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 2nd April 2023

It has been a pretty good week for me, more of that later. How has your week been?

Without further ado, here are the tweets of the week.

1. So let's start with my highlight. I saw one of the best football matches I've had the pleasure of attending at Brickfield Lane on Tuesday, watching Hadley FC beat Aylesbury 4-3. A real advert for grassroots football

2. Mark Amies nipped into the studio for a cuppa yesterday, always nice to have a chat. I rather like this tweet. There was a time when it seemed like half of Mill Hill was working at Green Shield house. I remember the company going bust. It was possibly the first time I realised that nothing is really permanent. My mum would get myself and my sister to lick the stamps and put them in the books. We always got loads, as my Dad would fill up cars he was working on at MacMetals and nab the stamps. I think that was where my mum got our Xmas presents from

3. Can you help?

4. I thought this was a rather good shout. Any other local suggestions?

5. This is the most lovely tweet of the week by a country mile. My suster went to school with Spike Milligan's daughter in Mill Hill at St Marys Abbey and Spike opened the school fete. Much missed

6. As fighting this nonsense was the Raison D'etre of this blog for many a year, this tweet simply has to be included. It's nice being proven right, but if the daft idiots had listened in the first place, it would have saved Barnet residents tens of millions of quid that the council could've spent on something useful

7. Let's just say we totally agree

8. A date for your diary

9. Another date for your diary

10. Great to hear a local legend on the radio!

That's all folks!

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet

Here they are!

1. Had to start here, this is wonderful

2. I have always thought Finchley was rather chilly when I had to do cross country runs at FCHS, but I never knew this. Twitter can be wonderful

3. Well done to Lucie keeping an eye on this

4. And well done to these wonderful people

5. A date for your diary

6. I rather enjoyed this thread from the splendid @time_nw account

7. This is probably my favourite news story right now, thanks to Jake for drawing my attention to it

8. A great crowd for @Hadleyfc yesterday. Good to see our local team being well supported

9. A fair enough question, surely a car should not just be left on double yellow lines?

10. The best gig in the Borough of Barnet last night!

Sunday, 26 February 2023

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 26th February 2023

How has your week been? I've been busy! Been to a couple of gigs over the weekend, watched some footie on the telly (no Hadley FC this week), had a nice takeaway from the Mill Hill Tandoori last night.

Without further ado, here is what our local tweeters have been up to. Don't forget to follow any who tickle your fancy. I'd hate to think I've dug out all of these wonderful tweeters for you and you don't follow them!

1. Anyone remember Green Shield Stamps? Their head office was in Edgware!

2. We lost a local legend this week. This seemed the most appropriate tweet to mark his passing

3. Another wonderful talk from Barnet libraries

4. If you are wondering how the new Brent Cross West station is coming on, Anne Clark has kindly posted this

5. Good news should've been done years ago

6. A big shout out for our local community champions

7. Can you solve the mystery?

8. When you buy hooky musical instruments or tools, you are robbing someone of their livilyhood

9. I could say so much about this, but it says it all

10. We'll finish with some nice local music history

That's all folks!

The Tweets of the Week in the London Borough of Barnet 22nd Jan 2023

So how's your week been. I've had a lurgy so I had a quiet night in last night, and a pretty quiet week all in all. Feeling a bit better today though, so not too much to report, apart from writing a brand new song with The False Dots. The way I tend to write songs is to do a 'skeleton arrangement, get the band playing it, record it on my phone, then take it home, mull over it, then work out a proper arrangement with Fil Ross, our bass player and co-producer. The song was called Men & Motors. As sometimes happens, I listened to it and realised that the lyrics were too pompous and boring and didn't really work. So I rewrote them, played the new version to Fil on the acoustic guitar in the shop and now I think it's a banging number. We sorted out the arrangement, so it may well be a very productive week. Also had a couple of nice walkies with the doggies in the Ice

Anyway, enough of my week. What were the Tweeters of Barnet up to?

1. This is my favourite tweet of the week, it's great to see kids learning about their local enivornment and geography

2. This is amazing, perhaps the definitive explanation of how the Norther Line should look.

3. And what a great tweet to follow it with

4. This is another wonderful tweet from one of our regulars

5. Nice thread from Mark Amies on Colindale Station

6. This deserves a good plug

7. This is why I put up with Twitter and some of the people on it!

8. And whilst in Cricklewood, a new landmark was opened there this week. What's the verdict?

9. A date for your diary!

10. And finally, I missed this last week, but as it's next week, I felt it should be here. Please support this

That's all folks!

The Tweets of the Week in the London Borough of Barnet - 15th January 2023

My week? One of disappointments especially with regards to football. Manchester City were abysmal against Southampton, the Hadly FC's game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. I also learned during the Manchester Derby that I no longer understand the offside rule. We had a decent recording session with The False Dots, we've got a spiffing new song called "The sexy sci fi sirens of the seventies", which is a bit of a mash up of Glam Rock and the Cramps, with a bit of an R Dean Taylor vibe going on. Last night I had my first beer and curry of the year, just a couple. It was very pleasant.

That's enough of me. How was your week? This is what the Tweeters of the Borough have been up.

1. Lets start in Burnt Oak, with a word of thanks to a much loved retiring local PC

2. If you are a football player or fan, this is the sight you hate most! All week you look forward to the match, then this happens. In some ways it's worse than . I hope that Cricklewood WFC had a better Saturday afternoon than I did!

3. Can you chip in a few pennies to help.

4. And whilst we are in Cricklewood. I love the work of Reel Streets

5. Have you got talent? HEre's your chance

6. HAve your say on the future of Finchley Lido

7. A great thread from one of our regular top tweeters.

8. \Talking of @Time_NW, I think he'll enjoy this

9. Take care in Salcombe Gardens, NW7 - The Daleks have invaded!

10. Did you know about the much missed Jeff Beck RIP's links to Mill Hill

That's all folks!
