The final tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 19th November 2023 - A statement

 I had a couple of emails asking me whether I should be doing this feature, in light of the platform owners behaviour. This has seen large companies such as M&S and BT withdrawing advertising from the brand. The question I have to ask is this. Do I want to promote a company such as "X" which is run by someone who clearly has a very different agenda for his platform to what I happen to believe in. This is something I've thought long and hard about since the ownership was changed. 

I have to be honest, I love many aspects of Twitter, not least it's democracy. Anyone can post a tweet which could go viral and go around the world. I've learned all manner of things and made a few good friends along the way. I block those that I don't want to see and I have always enjoyed doing this feature. 

Since the current owner took the helm, I've found it increasingly difficult to put this together. On occasisons, searches haven't worked. Every move seems to have been misconceived attempts to squeeze more money out of the platform, none of which have made it easier to use or better for the ordinary folk who use it. Some of the changes, charging for blue ticks, limiting searches, making their view of what you want the default, so you see all manner of tweets you are not interested in are infuriating. 

It seems that the platform has lost it's heart and soul. Tweets are no longer tweets. Twitter is no longer twitter. How can you pick "tweets of the week" when there is no such thing as a tweet? I doubt whether Elon Musk gives a flying F**K whether I do this or what I think of his platform. For the time being, I am staying on the platform, but I look at it less and less. I think it is dying on its feet. My wish is that Musk would sell it to someone who understood what it should and could be, rather than seemingly running it as a vanity project. 

Do I want to spend my Sunday morning doing this feature? I don't really think I do. So this is it.

I will finish with a special edition. This weeks pick are the good and bad of local tweeters, which I am retweeting as a final hurrah, with a bit of commentary.

1. I f it hadn't been for the campaign to save the Railway Hotel in Edgware, I may have wrapped this feature up a long time ago. Twitter was an effective campaigning platform for naming and shaming lazy Councillors. A big thanks is due to Cllr Lucy Wakeley, who has stepped up. If the Barnet Tories have any sense, they will find a bigger platform for her talents

3. I really feel I had to say this. David is a nice enough bloke, but if he wants to persuade me that he is worthy of my vote, then he'd better do a few less photo ops and a bit more proper campaigning on local issues


4. I will miss the tweets from our local sports clubs


5. And now for the worst of local Twitter. Smart media and PR exec rewriting our local history

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 22nd October 2023

 As ever, I start with a potted round up of my week, before we get down to business. I've had a wonderful week. Wednesday saw a rehearsal for the False Dots forthcoming gig next Saturday ( CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS ), with Tom our trumpet player.  On Thursday, I went down to the NFT to watch Ken Loach's new film 'The Old Oak'. I am a big fan of Loach's work, ever since I first watched Kez, many moons ago. I realised that in some ways, many of his films are semi autobiographical, one man drowning in a sea of injustice. It is a good commentary on Great Britain today. Whatever you may think of Ken Loach, I believe we need people like him, to tell us things we don't want to hear and to challenge us. I went to an afternoon screening, followed by an Orange Hill School reunion, that was nice. On Friday as reported, I went to see Sunny War at the Slaughtered Lamb. Last night, it was Lloyd Cole who was wonderful. I've seen Lloyd Cole twice in my life, both times I missed watching England lose a World cup game due to a controversial decision. Last night it was The Rugby World Cup semi. In 1986, I went to Milton Keynes bowl to watch him, as well as Simple Minds, The Waterboys and Big Audio Dynamite. It was the day of the infamous hand of God Maradona goal. Lloyd was good, but I'll make sure I don't see him when there's a world cup game on!

Any way, enough of all of that. I didn't do this feature last week. Barnet seemed too traumatised by the awful events in the Middle East to tweet anything, but this week our tweeters are back on form.

1. Let's start in Burnt Oak, were a long standing stalwart of the community has just retired. We wish Fr Colin a happy and peaceful retirement


2. Nice historical tweet from a rather good account that is new to us, and a map from an old friend, showing this cartographhically

7. We are big supporters of the night shelters scheme


8. A great result for the Borough of Barnet's oldest football team. Why not join them next Saturday at Brickfield Lane (opposite The Gate pub) for some solid non league footie. It's a great club with a friendly atmosphere (and then nip up the hill to High Barnet for the False Dots!)

And finally

There are three things I don't do on this feature. I don't pick my own tweets, as a Manchester City Fan I don't celebrate Manchester United and their players and I only pick ten tweets. The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 8th November 2023

As ever we start with a quick round up of my week.  

So how's your week been? It's not been a great week for me. My cousins funeral on Friday cast a long shadow, Yesterday we had a nice wak around the Totteridge Valley and Darlands, followed by a good curry with friends. I took a few piccies that I rather like.

I made the mistake of not going to Waltham Abbey to watch Hadley FC and missed one of the games of the season, great result lads. I also had a great rehearsal with The False Dots on Thursday, for our forthcoming gigs at the Bull Theatre and The Dublin Castle.

 It was particularly good for me, as we have resurrected an old song, one I've not sung before. It sounded great. I am really enjoying singing with the band. The only problem is I find it a bit constraining on my guitar playing. 


Anyway, that's enough of my week. What have our tweeters been up to

2. This caught my eye. I was a big fan of Michael Moorcock sci fi. This is a film that I've always wanted to see, but have never managed to. I wanted to watch it at a proper cinema. If you've not read Moorcocks works, Behold the Man and Mother London are true masterpieces. Very thought provoking. My cousin told me that he considered Behold the Man to be blasphemous, but I see nothing wrong with imaginative fiction, even if it offends some. I miss the old ABC in Edgware, saw some classics there.

3. One of the Boroughs best musical artists. Great to hear her on BBC London yesterday on one of my fave radio shows

4. One of the pleasures of this feature is finding gems like this and giving them a shout out!

5. Always like to give our friends at The Colindale folk club a shout out

6. This is wonderful. Whilst I love Bang Bang, the old Oriental City was far superior!

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 3rd September 2023

 Firstly, I've neglected this feature over the last three weeks. If you've not followed the blog, this is due to being rather tired following my radical prostatectomy procedure on the 9th August and also a weekend trip to France to recuperate with my wife that turned into a whole week, thanks to air traffic control and Easyjet. What should have been a two hour flight Nice morphed into a 15 hour train journey involving a sleeper to Paris and the Eurostar to St Pancras. But hey ho, I'm back and here we go.

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 23rd July 2023

 My week has been pretty good. I recorded a new single with my band, The False Dots on Wednesday, saw one of my favourite bands, The Dickies on Thursday, saw the wonderful play 'Patriots' on Friday at the Noel Coward Theatre on Friday and had a very pleasant curry with my Daughter at The Mill Hill Tandoori last night.

That was my week, what was yours like? More to the point, what have our local Twitteratti been up to. In truth, it has been a pretty interesting week, with a decent selection. This feature will be on holiday next week, so it's just as well (I'm not around on Sunday), so you'd better enjoy this!

1. Lets start with a question. Did you know there was an HS2 project in Edgware? I didn't until I saw this. Does anyone know the details?


2. Our local football community put rivalries aside and made a magnificent effort. A big shout out to all the teams who participated. I am proud of our local football community



3. Did you know London's first nightbus ran from Cricklewood to Liverpool Street?


4. If you've never heard the Sitar being played, you really should check this out and if you have, you will probably want to!

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 9th April 2023

 I've had a wonderful week, I hope you have as well. Without further ado, lets see what the Tweeters of the Borough have been up to.


1. Back in 1944, my Dad was flying Wellington Bombers for the RAF and was shot down and taken prisoner in Romania. He was taken to the burial of his rear gunner at a cemetary for allied air crew, then given hospitality by the Romanian Air Force, before being returned to the POW camp. He said that the Romanian people were the warmest, most generous people he'd ever come across, especially given that he'd been bombing them when he was shot down. It seems that the tradition continues. Happy Easter to our local Romanian Community and everyone else. Easter is a time when we are reminded that we are all one people really


2. I think this is a wonderful picture


3. I rather like this. I used to have a Camper Van, but the Missus made me hack it in for a more sensible family car. This is a wonderful advert


4. Reel Streets is a wonderful account, I highly recommend it to you. This is just one example of their work


5. I also rather like Robin Morel's account, he's our local network rail track supremo, he's chronicling the rise of Brent Cross West station. I nearly did an April Fool on that. I was going to state that as Brent Cross Shopping centre was closing, it was being renamed Cricklewood North, which I actually think is a much better name!


6. We don't normally do politics tweets on this slot, but I do think many people will be interested to see these. I think Finchley is the most interesting. Bear in mind, these are only polls.

The Tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 26th March 2023

 Here we are again! I've had a great week. We had a fantastic time at The Dublin Castle with The False Dots on Friday, It was packed and everyone said it was one of our best ever! 



No football this weekend, which seemed a bit odd, but had a lovely curry at the Mill Hill Tandoori. It was also packed, as was every other Mill Hill Restaurant, which was great to see. 


1. I don't normally include 'political' posts, but the CPO of the Railway Hotel is great news. We've featured the campaign here for years now. Sad really that it needed a change of council administration to happen

The tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet 19th February 2023

I have to be honest. I've not done this feature for a couple of weeks. The reason? I genuinely couldn't find ten tweets of the quality to justify it and I was not going to do it for the sake of it.  I'm pleased to say that this week, we've had a good selection of decent tweeting locally. So enjoy!
