Guest Post - Update on the Mill Hill Libraries meeting - By Richard Logue

Do you use your local library? Does your elderly neighbour? Your friend with children? Your colleague's teenage children? Your relative who works from home? Please help save Mill Hill library by attending the meeting organised by Mill Hill Residents Association at Hartley Hall tomorrow night (Wednesday 14th) - and spread the word. Thanks.
Mill Hill Residents Association's photo. What a great turnout for Wednesday night's meeting on our libraries - almost 200 people - special thanks to authors Deborah Moggach and S.F. Said for their passionate defence of our libraries, and also to Matthew Offord MP, Andrew Dismore AM, Cllr John Hart and of course Mrs. Angry herself, Theresa Musgrove. Of course, most importantly, the near 200 people who came out on a wet and cold night to defend our libraries.

Lets hope this puts to bed the myth being cobbled by some that no one is too bothered about the future of Barnets Libraries !!!!!

Dismore to face Coleman for GLA Barnet / Camden seat ?

Expect an announcement shortly that former Hendon MP Andrew Dismore will be facing Brian Coleman for the GLA seat in Barnet/Camden. This promises to be an interesting fight. Whilst Coleman claims to "work 100 hours a week", Dismore is well known for his hard work, pounding the streets.

Dismore has increasingly been seen at the various rallys against cuts, etc, getting back into the groove. Over the past few GLA elections, Labour has not exactly put up candidates against Coleman who have tried very hard. Whatever you may think about Dismore, I suspect  Mr Coleman may find himself having a rather more difficult fight. A few people have asked me if, as I'm a Lib Dem I'd fancy putting my hat into the ring against Coleman. As I think Coleman is a complete disgrace, nothing would give me greater pleasure. I think that would make a rather interesting and explosive mix on the stump, don't you?

Andrew Dismore needs your cash !

As the Tory/Lib Dem cuts start to bite people on the public payroll, one man is fighting back. He believes he was the first victim of the dodgy policies of the new government. That man is former MP for Hendon, Andrew Dismore.

He believes that incompetence at Barnet Council lead to him being cheated out of his rightful place in the house of commons. He lost the Hendon seat by 105 votes. Mr Dismore has evidence that all sorts of things happened to voters who were unable to cast votes for him. He has until Thursday to launch a legal challenge. He only has one small problem. He hasn't got the cash necessary to launch the case. Lawyers have told him that it will be a six figure sum.

Now I don't want any naughty wags leaving comments that maybe he could sell his second home and fund the case out of the profits or take out a debenture against future expense claims. Anyway if you have a cool quarter of a million pounds to spare and fancy helping Andrew challenge the result, he'd be absolutely chuffed to hear from you. You can can contact Mr Dismore on 0208 202 2154 or email admin@hendonlabourparty.com.

If you have a quarter of a million to spare and you don't want to help Andrew Dismore challenge the decision, you can click on the "EMAIL ME" link in my profile and you could help fund a youth project run by YMCA for disadvantaged children aged 14-18 to develop music related skills and I'll put you in touch with Marcella at the YMCA  who runs the project and would be endebted for ever for your generosity. Even if you only have £10 she'd appreciate it.

I still haven't found what I'm looking for - Have you?

Many people hit on the blog doing Google searches. For your entertainment, I thought I'd share what people are looking for when they find the blog. My stats keep track of the most popular searches people perform to find the blog. I've removed any where people are looking for me (ie Barnet Eye, Rog T) and I've aggregated ones where people are using different spellings etc for the same thing (Mike Freer, Mike Freer MP).

1. matthew offord
2. andrew reid mill hill
3. mike freer mp
4. show me your tits
5. barnet council management structure
6. death by poison
7. hank marvin jehovah's witness
8. brian coleman
9. captain useless
10. first capital connect awful

Sadly I think that the bevvy of people performing the fourth most popular search will be sorely disappointed. I do hope Matthew Offord is pleased, he's more popular than Mike Freer by a long way (Andrew Dismore didn't even make the cut). It is also interesting to see that Mr Andrew Reid, a controversial local landowner is featuring in many searches (one or two people locally might say Mr Reid put the cont in controversial in Mill Hill, but personally I think he's an wholesome Asset - (Did I ever mention I'm dyslxic?)). Farmer Reid has built a childrens zoo and conference centre on the Ridgeway in Mill Hill. This has proven extremely popular with crowds of thousands flocking to it on busy days. The new Conservative Government has stated that it plans to relax regulation and allow small businessmen like Mr Reid to start up such ventures without red tape. The Tory administration in Barnet have been one of the first to enact such polices, allowing this whole enterprise to open without planning permission. Despite howls of protest from some local neighbours, so far Barnet Council has stuck  to it's business friendly guns and refused to take enforcement action against this local farmer/businessman. Barnet Council is to be applauded for standing up to local Council Taxpaying residents and defending the right of rich businessmen to do what they like on their own property. This blog is interested to see if other such businesses will be allowed to open on the green belt fields as part of the Barnet business friendly drive. By the way, Mr Reid was proudly elected as Deputy Chairman of Hendon Conservative association with special responsibility for fundraising and membership in March 2009. He must be praised for the sterling work he did getting our local Mill Hill Tory Councillors elected and securing the Parliamentary seat for Matthew Offord. Maybe Barnet Council would like to rent me a couple of green belt fields in Totteridge as I'd love to open a scrapyard there. I hear local Councillor Brian Coleman is motorist friendly, so surely the opportunity to buy a few spares on the cheap locally will be a great boon. I mean who in their right mind would rather look at rolling fields than a scrapyard.

Back to the subject of Google searches - I took to wondering who was the most disappointed person to do a Google search and find this blog? I reckon the person who entered this search

5 star hotel in mathura bakery and confectionery

or maybe this one

amusing appealing message to wife for service

I hope whoever you are and however you found this blog, you enjoyed reading it. I look forward (without irony) to the next Tory leaflet shouting "Local Lib Dems plan massive stadium scrapyard for Mill Hill Totteridge green belt" and you know what, they'll probably get away with it.

A message to the Labour Party in Barnet

Dear Barnet Labour Party,

There is no nice way to say this. I am saying this because the people of Barnet desperately need you to change, probably more than any local Labour party anywhere in the UK. I know that this will make me no friends at all, but frankly I really don't care anymore. I am saying this because if no one says it and no one does anything, then it is a total betrayal of the people who have supported  you, the working people of Barnet. Every single Labour party member in Barnet should read this and ask themselves "How did we let this happen?"

You are a disgrace and you've let the people of Barnet down badly. Barnet Council is run by a completely useless Conservative administration. Not only have they shown themselves to be financially incompetent, but they have embarked on a war against the poor, the vulnerable, the weak and their own employees. This campaign is called Future Shape. If you are a member of the Barnet Labour party, you either know about this and have done sweet FA about it, which is a disgrace or you don't know about it which is even worse. This is a plan to completely privatise all council functions, sell off all of the councils assets and reduce the council down to a core of highly paid officials and councillors, who sit in Ivory towers allocating lucrative contracts to private companies. This will  relocate thousands of jobs out of Barnet, causing poverty and deprivation. Where have the stalls been on the high street to fight this? Where have the leaflets been explaining why it is vital for Labour to kick the Tories out of the Town Hall? Where have the activists been marching up and down the high streets saying to people "Do you agree with these policies, if not join us". What about Barnet Councils war on Sheltered Housing tenants? Have you been marching up and down the High Street saying "They can't get away with this" Have you been saying to everyone you know "We can beat this, but only if we get off our lazy fat arses and do something". Where have the stalls been? Where have the pickets been. Oh yes, I hear you say "Andrew Dismore and Alison Moore were at the front of the March against sheltered housing in Finchley last year". Trouble was that they had no part in the organisation, they just turned up and hijacked it. Did they make sure that there was a Labour stall out in the High Street building on that, reminding everyone, week after week? No, of course they didn't.

What election leaflets did we get from Labour. Lots and lots from Andrew Dismore telling us how marvellous he was. If these leaflets had said "only a vote for Labour will stop the sheltered housing cuts and only a vote for Labour will stop wholesale privatisation, which will bring poverty and unemployment to Barnet, in big, bold brassy letters, then maybe Mr Dismore would have got the 106 extra votes he needed in Hendon". I have  no doubt whatsoever that if the Labour party had started it's local campaign against the warden cuts and the future shape program last year, and got a stall out in every High Street in Barnet once a month for the last year, they would have followed the example of Brent,Harrow and Camden and taken control of the council. As it was they were all too lazy.

Oh, I hear them say, we didn't have the activists on the ground to do it. Of course you didn't because you only do that by the leadership getting off their arses, organising local meetings, working hard and saying "get out there and get us some activists". Work breeds success and the Barnet Labour party did none. I don't believe the lie that there was nobody interested. I attended a few meetings of the Barnet Community Campaign and there was huge interest in fighting these policies. The sad thing was that the local Lavbour party wasn't. All they were interested in doing was trying to save Andrew Dismores seat. The sad truth is that if they'd campaigned against the council, they'd have swept Dismore in on the backwash. Dismores campaign was built on sand. There were no solid foundations.

Andrew Dismore won because Labour and the Lib Dems controlled the Council and there was a healthy network of local activists. These people worked tirelessly at ground level to fight on local issues and this engaged local people. The key turning point for Andrew was Edgware general hospital, where a huge local campaign swept him into power. Sadly once he got there, local people and local politics were forgotten. That was why the council was lost and that's why it wasn't regained.

I received an email yesterday from Don't Call Me Dave. He's a Conservative who runs the Not The Barnet Times blog. It is shameful that he's done more to oppose future shape, the warden cuts and all of the other inept actions of the Barnet Conservatives than the entire Barnet Labour Party put together. All the Barnet Labour Party had to do to win was say "Read the Not The Barnet Times blog and see why you cannot vote Conservative. This blog is written by a leading Barnet Conservative". They had all of the ammunition they needed from a source of impeccable trustworthyness.

I know that many angry Labour members will say "Well you are in no position to talk, you jumped ship to the Lib Dems". I did this because I believed that the Lib Dems were the only realistic opponents of the Barnet Tories in Mill Hill ward and also because they seemed to understand the need to campaign locally. Sure we lost, but we worked our socks off. We were squeezed by a general election happening on the same day as the council election. We have issues to sort out and lessons to learn, but there is one big difference between Labour and the Lib Dems in London. Labour had a huge swing in most councils apart from Barnet. The Lib Dems didn't. If you are a Labour party member living in Barnet and you don't like what the Council is doing, then get out and get active. Dust down those tressel tables, get that photocopier going and start telling people why they need to kick the Tories out in Barnet Town Hall.  If you start now and you start to reengage with all those lost Labour voters at street level, by the time of the next election you might get there. There will be plenty of local issues for you to fight, given the policies of local and national government. This can only be done from the ground up.

Many people have asked me if I am going to be rejoining the Labour party, following the Lib Dem pact with the Tories. I have thought long and hard about this. As to the deal "I agree with Charles" - Charles Kennedy said he could never vote for such a pact. Having said that, I am Mill Hill through and through and the harsh reality is that only the local Lib Dems offer an alternative to the Tories in this ward. All of my reasons for quitting the Labour party still stand true. As I said to Dont Call Me Dave, the reason that the Tories won in Barnet is because no one believed that the local Labour Party had worked hard enough to prove it was a viable alternative.

I do have one suggestion for the local Labour Party, a parting gift. There is only one person in Barnet who has the skills, capability, knowledge and drive to get you back on the right track. If Alison Moore really is a leader she will lead a delegation around to her place and beg her to become the Barnet Labour party general secretary and not take no for an answer. Give her access to all your cash, all your campaigning resources and let her run the back room show. That person is Vicki Morris and if you do that you will win the Barnet Council back in four years time. If you don't ask her then you deserve oblivion. She knows how to campaign, how to work hard and how to fight.

Barnet Council Election Fiasco : Hendon Constituency Latest

Regular readers of this blog will know that I'm not a fan of either the Tory or the Labour candidate from the  2010 general election for Hendon. Outgoing MP Andrew Dismore is on record as saying that he felt that problems with voting arrangements had resulted in voters who wished to vote for him and who turned up at polling stations being unable to do so. The margin of Matthew Offords victory was 105 votes. This means that if a net difference of 106 Andrew Dismore voters were unable to vote, due to bad organisation, he has a very good point.

I spoke to Mr Dismore on the phone this morning to try and ascertain whether he honestly felt that the problems stopped a net total of 106 more of his voters from casting their vote. Mr Dismore gave me an example of voters at one polling station being told at approx 9.30am that the polling forms hadn't arrived and they should go home. Now I voted at Hartley Hall polling station in Mill Hill. This was at 8am. I sat and chatted to our teller for approx 1/2 an hour, leaving at approx 8.30. All forms had arrived on time and we had counted 120 voters by the time I left. I took the telling slips to our HQ on departure. This station wasn't particularly busy at this time (compared to queues I saw later at other stations). By my estimates, we were getting 80 voters an hour. If the station Mr Dismore mentions had a similar level of voters, that means 200 would have passed through by 9.30. The council election results would indicate a 3:1 split of voters.That is a net total of 133. Enough to swing the vote? Now clearly some may have come back later, however we don't know how many. We also don't know what time the ballot papers arrived.

Now quite clearly all of this is purely anecdotal from an interested party. I have no interest in which of the two guys win, but I have a massive interest in making sure any vote in the London Borough of Barnet is fair. I am extremely disturbed by what I've been told happened. I wish to verify this for myself as I intend to produce a full and detailed report. I am asking a massive favour from all Barnet Eye readers. I can only get to the bottom of this if you help me. Please could any Barnet Eye reader who had any problem voting email me. Please detail what time (approx) you voted and where the polling station was. I don't need to know who you voted for (but if you feel it is relevant please tell me). I will merely collate the statistical evidence. I may reproduce the outline details here on this blog (without mentioning your name) of any reported incidents.  I will under no circumstances divulge your name elsewhere. If you specifically ask for it, I will pass your details on to Andrew Dismore, if you feel your experience could help his case.

This is not a political crusade and I'm not taking sides. I just want to make sure that we fix the problems for future.

A message for Andrew Dismore and Matthew Offord

As the job of MP for Hendon passed from Andrew Dismore to Matthew Offord. I suppose it's a bit rich for a failed council candidate such as me to offer anyone any advice, but it is genuine and well meant.

Dear Andrew Dismore,
I have read with abject horror your comments about the election. I was at the count and heard your speech. I am quite frankly appalled. I am one of the thousands of people who worked for your election in 1997 and voted for you in all the elections which you won. I am sorry to say that the reason you lost on Thursday was because you let us all down. I acknoweldge and appreciate your hard work in the constituency and had it not been for this I would have been a far more vitriolic and constant critic. Your loss on Thursday was down to one thing. You. It was because of your ridiculous attitude to expenses. You may or may not recall that we met in 2002 when I was still a Labour member. You may recall that I advised you then to stop abusing the expenses system. I told you this as a concerned friend . My advice then - "stop it or it will come back to haunt you". I am sorry to say it has.

This is for two reasons. You have turned off many voters who otherwise would have been more than happy to vote for you. Secondly your actions have severely demotivated activist (and former activists such as myself). Had it not been for this, I would have remained a member of the Labour Party and campaigned through this blog on your behalf. You would have won handsomely. As it is, your actions forced me to re-evaluate my political allegiance. Having broken the bond with Labour, but not wishing to see a Tory victory, I am more than happy to be a Lib Dem. You have disgraced yourself. If you had stood up and apologised for the expenses scandal when you lost and behaved with grace and dignity, I would have probably felt sorry for you and guilty for not voting Labour in a general election for the first time. As it was, I felt your behaviour has completely vindicated my decision.

Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the ordinary people of Hendon. I wish you luck in future with your career and hope that in the fullness of time, when you have reflected on what happens, you realise that it is nobodies fault but your own. Please learn from this and stop looking like a bad loser. It is hard to take, believe me I know. Take it on the chin.

Regards

Roger Tichborne

---------------------------------------------------------

Dear Matthew Offord,

Firstly congratulations on winning Hendon. As you know, I have been one of your harshest critics. You now have the chance to prove me wrong. I urge you to not take the people of Hendon for granted and to work as hard for them as Andrew Dismore has. Given your majority, you have one of the tightest marginal seats in the country and will be under severe pressure to hold it. Once Gordon Brown goes and David Cameron calls a snap election, you will be under severe pressure to keep it. The best way to do this is hard work for the people you represent.

One bit of advice I can offer you for free. If and when you eventually lose an election, take a look at how Mr Dismore has behaved. This will be how he is remembered - as a bad loser. Whenever that day comes, behave with dignity and grace. I genuinely hope you do a good job until that day comes.

regards

Roger Tichborne

A very good week for Andrew Dismore

The sitting MP for Hendon, Andrew Dismore has not been getting too much good press of late, what with expenses scandals and the associated incoming flack. Although he has a decent sized majority, he must know that he is more vulnerable than at any time since he took the seat from Tory John Gorst in 1997. I should imagine that last night he nipped out from his lovely house in Notting Hill Gate to one of the rather nice, swanky bistros around the corner and sunk a bottle or three of the good stuff. Why would Andrew be in such upbeat spirits? Well he's nothing if not hard working, our Andrew. He will have read the latest press release from Lynne Hillan's Barnet Tory Council announcing her cabinet.

There are several pieces of very good news for Andrew contained in this document. Firstly and most obviously the fact that his Tory opponent for the seat, Matthew Offord, appears to have given up on the chance of winning in Hendon. How could he tell this. Well Mike Freer, former Leader quit the cabinet to concentrate on his duties as a candidate for Finchley. Given that Finchley is a far more winnable seat for Freer, surely Offord should be devoting every spare second if he thought he had a chance, as Freer has done. Secondly, Bulmer has kept Offord in his Community Engagement and Community Safety job. So far this has involved Offord putting out nanny state style press releases which have been widely lampooned and have only succeeded in making Offord look silly. Here is my favourite quote from Matthew
Councillor Matthew Offord, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Community Safety, said: “Toys are usually at the top of most children’s Christmas lists, so it is particularly important this time of year to think carefully when buying gifts whether the toy is age appropriate and safe. Remove all packaging once the toys have been unwrapped and keep a careful eye to make sure little ones are playing with the right toys. By keeping toy safety at the top of your list you should be providing your children a safe and fun Christmas to remember.”
You see Matthew seems to believe that we all give our three year olds flick knives, plastic bags and matches for Christmas. It doesn't seem to occur to him that parents no1 concern is the well being of their children and we don't need advice from him to tell us to look after them.

The third piece of good news, probably the best bit as far as Andrew is concerned is the fact that Robert Rams is continuiung as Cabinet Member for Investment in Learning. Why should this be such good news for Andrew? Well for most families in Hendon, the one area where they are most likely to come into conflict with the Tory Council is their childrens education. We currently have countless children being taught in portacabins, we had new IT suites closed to make way for emergency classrooms and we had thousands of parents getting stressed due to the council not providing enough places at their schools of choice. Who is this down to? The cabinet member responsible for Investment in Education. When is this whole fiasco going to be at it's worst next year? Right in the middle of the general election campaign? Councillor Robert Rams has built up a reputation for not being up to the job. Apparently he's very good at ringing up the local paper to complain to the editor that articles are beastly, but when it comes to actually doing his job? Andrew Dismore knows this and as I mentioned he's a hard worker and extremely meticulous. I expect him to throw the kitchen sink at Rams and his incompetence. I fully expect Rams to shout back, "that's not fair, it's not my fault, someone else did it".

The bottom line for the voters of Hendon is this. Do you want someone who clearly can't even be bothered to pull his finger out and campaign - Matthew Offord, or do you want Andrew Dismore, who lets just say has been filling the papers with stories about his expenses? If the thought of choosing between these two doesn't exactly fill your heart with joy, you could always have a look at what Matthew Harris, The Lib Dem alternative has to say.

Captain Useless Update : Matthew Offord is lost in Edgware !

Matthew Offord, AKA Captain Useless, likes to boast about his nautical prowess. Sadly, for someone who'd like us to believe that he's Hendons answer to Captain Cook, he doesn't even seem to know his way around his own Constituency. I found this press release from the good Captain on the Barnet Council website (click on the picture or go to the website for a more readable form).

I was completely gobsmacked to read the following :-
Residents in a Mill Hill street got the chance to meet Police, Neighbourhood Watch,Trading Standards Officers and members of London Fire Brigade face to face in an opportunity to learn how best keep themselves and their belongings safe.
On Thursday 19 November between 10am to 2pm Hale Safer Neighbourhood Team in partnership with Barnet Council Trading Standards, Barnet Neighbourhood Watch and the London Fire Brigade visited every resident in Farm Road, Mill Hill, to provide crime prevention and fire safety advice aswell as information on dealing with rogue traders. The road was chosen as it has been the target of rogue traders in the past.

You see, Farm Road is in Edgware.

If the former Deputy Leader of the Council and Parliamentacy Candidate for Hendon, doesn't even know the difference between Mill Hill and Edgware, it really does show an appalling lack of knoweldge about his constituency. There was much malicious gossip as to why he didn't attend Tory Leader David Camerons Q&A session last week, which was staged at Hasmonean School for Boys in Hendon. Could the explanation be far more mundane? Was Offord just wandering around Burnt Oak looking for it? Yesterday, I wrote a blog about how an old friend of mine (who I affectionately call Miss Whiplash) who is a died in the wool Tory, commented about the lack of activity from Mr Offord. Could it be that myself and the lady of the lash have got it all wrong? Maybe Matthew Offord has been out furiously canvassing, night and day knocking on doors in Berkhampstead ( a place which sounds like he'd feel at home) because he thinks it's in Hendon?

Anyway Matthew, just for you, as I'm sure it will be very useful, I've included a map of Farm Road from Google Maps. I'd suggest that next time you write a press release, you check the location in Google Earth. There has been much debate in the last few days about Tories being upper class twits. I'd suggest that Matthew Offord look less like a member of the Berkeley Hunt and more like a credible LOCAL candidate, if he actually knew where he was when walking around his constituency.

If I was Andrew Dismore (our Local MP) who has been having a torrid time of late, I'd certainly be handing this press release out down at the Broadwalk shopping Centre. Andrew must be laughing his head off.

Captain Useless Update : Miss Whiplash makes my day !

All the best people in Mill Hill shop in Marks and Spencers. Mind you, so do all of the worst people. Having lived here all of my life, I know all sorts of people who earn their money in a whole manner of ways. I bumped into one of the more colourful characters I know in M&S last Thursday. I call her Miss Whiplash and much of our banter involves discussions about luncheon vouchers (all rather light hearted, I must add). Now we've known each other for years and she is one of my best sources of info at Barnet Council, for reasons I couldn't possibly disclose here.

Anyway we had a brief conversation as I procured a couple of rather tasty plums at the fruit and veg counter. "You've rather upset a few people recently darling" she said. "Oh, what have I done now" I asked. "You know, you really are a very naughty boy (laughs)" she said. Then she said something which rather surprised me "You've been very quiet on the Matthew (Offord) front of late. Have you been told to tone it down?" she enquired. "Erm no, He's just not really been doing anything of late" I responded. She then said "Yes, he's getting rather a reputation for not doing anything". I suggested that she advised him to pull his finger out, as his opponenent, Andrew Dismore is nothing if not a workaholic at campaigning, if he really wants to win the Hendon seat. Anyway, she then shared a few further indescretions (all completely unrepeatable here) and toddled off on her way, in her six inch stiletto's.

I hadn't really truly understood the true power of Miss Whiplash in the Tory party. It seems that one quiet word from her and they all jump. I checked the Barnet Council website and it seems that Matthew Offord has been told off and he's leapt into action. Whilst his Labour adversary, Andrew Dismore has been speaking in the Commons about the burning issue for Mill Hill Commuters - The Thameslink Dispute, and his Lib Dem opponent has gone one step further and arranged a meeting with the First Capital Connect Directors,  Matthew Offord has identified an issue even more important to the hard pressed commuters of Mill Hill. Yes, he's worried that the financial rigors of the credit crunch will force us hard pressed parents to abandon our children to unsafe and dangerous toys. Poor Matthew must have nightmares of us all saying "Sorry Johnny, we couldn't afford a safe and age appropriate toy for you, so here's a box of matches and some paper, go and burn down auntie Madges shed".

Anyway here's his advice from his latest press release -
Councillor Matthew Offord, Cabinet Member for Community Engagement and Community Safety, said: “Toys are usually at the top of most children’s Christmas lists, so it is particularly important this time of year to think carefully when buying gifts whether the toy is age appropriate and safe. Remove all packaging once the toys have been unwrapped and keep a careful eye to make sure little ones are playing with the right toys. By keeping toy safety at the top of your list you should be providing your children a safe and fun Christmas to remember.”
I'm sure Miss Whiplash will be most impressed to see that "old Nanny Offord" is giving us sensible advice and making sure that we look after our little darlings. There's nothing us parents like more than a nice patronising press release from our favourite Councillor, telling us things which are blindingly obvious.

Farce Crapital Conmerchants - No end to the Thameslink misery, so it's time for action

Hard pressed commuters in Mill Hill are sick of Farce Crapital Conmerchants. We buy our season tickets and all we expect in return is the service that is in the timetable. They are very good at apologies and excuses, but this just isn't good enough. They say "please claim compensation" - again this isn't good enough. First Group makes huge profits, the Managing Director, Muir Lockhead gets the best part of a million quid in "compensation" for running this failed company. The system for claiming compensation is deliberately difficult to use. Why? because this discourages people from claiming. The previous company running the service had a better scheme. You got a discount on your next season ticket if they failed to meet the required service level. What happened? First Group changed this to maximise profits, to make it as hard to use as possible.

I wrote to our MP, Andrew Dismore to see if he could do anything, as the government runs the franchises. You may have noticed press reports that National Express were stripped of their East Anglia franchise for "upsetting the Government". It seems that upsetting the Government is more serious than upsetting the people who pay for the service. Mr Dismore sent me a nice letter back. Unfortunately, he's not really done anything at all other than this. It contains THIS LINK TO HIS WEBSITE with a reply from FCC.  In it, FCC say they've done all they can. This is rubbish. They could have settled the dispute, then employed more drivers so that the Union can't pull this stunt again.

The reason they don't is because they are making more money than ever. By cramming us into trains like cattle and not paying overtime, they make even more money. The Answer is simple. For every day since the dispute started, they refund season ticket holders the percentage of services not running. So if they fail to run 50% of services, season ticket holders get a refund of equivalent to 50% one days travel. Of course they will squeal that this is impossible. I'm sure that if the Government told them "do it or lose the franchise" they'd soon change their mind.

I bumped into the Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for Hendon, Matthew Harris earlier. I told him what I thought about the whole business and he agreed. He is urgently working on a plan of action TO REALLY HOLD FCC TO ACCOUNT, which he'll be emailing to me in the next couple of days. He has a track record of extracting U-Turns from the Government with well planned and popular campaigns, such as this one to reverse the cuts to TA Army training. When I hear the details of Matthews plan of action, I will post it here and I urge all commuters, regardless of their party allegiance to take part, it's about service, not politics. In these times when politicians seem happy to hide in their central London flats and cop huge allowances, we really should support the few who are prepared to actually do something. I sincerely hope that the candidates from the other parties also join in Matthews campaign, to form a united Mill Hill front against FCC. He's doing the hard work getting the campaign together, it would be nice to see a message of support for the campaign to post here from our MP, Andrew Dismore and the Tory challenger Matthew Offord. The campaign is called

NO WAY TO RUN A RAILWAY

Anyone wishing to take part can email me BY CLICKING HERE. We plan to start by doing a survey of commuters in approx 2 weeks time (got to write it and get it printed), so we can get the views of commuters. Anyone who could help giving these out, please get in touch. We want to give a copy to ALL MILL HILL commuters travelling in the rush hour.

Andrew Dismore, Labour MP - Only big people matter

Until today, Andrew Dismore MP had my vote. Despite his expenses, which I find truly distateful, I know people he has helped locally and I passionately believe he is a better man for the job than his Tory rival, Matthew Offord. Unfortunately as more revelations about Mr Dismores expenses come out, I've found it harder to justify voting for him. Sadly, the last straw came today with an interview in the Edgware Times regarding his expenses and the complaints (check the 2nd last paragpraph). Andrew Dismore said :-
"If it was a big issue we would have had a lot of complaints from big people"
 Sorry Andrew. This was the point where you lost my vote. You see I've voted Labour at every election because I believe that Labour was the party for the "little people". I believe that a Labour party should listen to "little people". I never thought I would say this, but I CANNOT VOTE for the Labour candidate in Hendon Constituency. As I believe that the Tory Candidate is even worse, I will be switching my vote to Matthew Harris, Liberal Democrat candidate and I will be actively suggesting that all Tory and Labour voters do the same. We need a change in the House of Commons. We need a new broom and we need all of the tainted MP's who think they've done nothing wrong to go.

To me that means changing the habits of a lifetime to vote for a Lib Dem. If we don't get rid of disease at the heart of British politics, then we'll end up with a third world economy, racked with corruption. Anyone who follows this blog will know all about the shenanigans at Tory Barnet Council, where Matthew Offord was deputy leader until recently.

The Brent Cross planning decision showed the Tories are only interested in "Big" property developers. Andrew Dismore tells us that only "Big" people's complaints matter. I'm Sorry Andrew Dismore and I'm sorry Matthew Offord, but I hope and pray that the electors of Hendon give you both a

A Lib Dem Party Political Broadcast by Eric Pickles - Conservative MP

What on Earth is going on? I regularly check out many blogs and on my travels I came across one with this Youtube clip. It was made by the Conservative Party and features their campaign planner, MP Eric Pickles, making an impassioned plea for the Lib Dems.

The sad thing is that Mr Pickles doesn't even realise he's doing it. Forward the clip to 1.00 and listen to his description of how the electoral system works in the UK. At the last election, the Tories got 35.7% of the popular vote and 194 seats. Labour got LESS - 35.5% and got 286 seats.

Mr Pickles then goes on to explain that to get a majority, the Tories need to have a double digit lead over the Labour party. I hadn't realised that the Labour party had a 60 seat majority despite polling less votes than the Conservatives. However you look at it, a fairer system of voting would have meant that we didn't have a Blair/Brown government. The Tories have long stated that the "first past the post" system is "better". Does that mean that they think that a Gordon Brown majority would have been better?

I'm not an expert on voting reform, but until I saw Mr Pickles video, I'd never realised how unfair the system actually was. The only party who believe in reform of the voting system are the Lib Dems. Has it occurred to Mr Pickles that he's just made the best advert ever for the Lib Dems? Given the troughing which Tory MP's and their duck houses have been up to, is drawing attention to the fact that the whole system is dodgy a bright move? Yesterday, I detailed how the Lib dem candidate for Hendon, Mr Matthew Harris, may like to remind his Tory and Labour rivals of how they've cocked up Thameslink, the preferred method of commuting for many Hendon residents. I'd suggest that Mr Harris may also like to show any Tories he bumps into, Mr Pickles video, and explains to them that Mr Pickles thinks that a system that gave Blair/Brown a huge majority despite getting less votes than the Tories, is the way to run the country in the year 2010.

There's something in the air in Barnet - an opportunity for the Lib Dems

Something rather strange happened today. I got a massive spike in the number of hits on my blog. The strange thing is, I don't understand why. Normally if I get a day where it's much busier it's because someone has linked to a story, there is a big news story and I've come up in google searches or someone's emailed their mates and said "look at this great blog" or words to that effect.

I thought it was possibly something to do with Andrew Dismore being in the news for his flipping of flat expenses, but strangely more people found the blog today searching for Vanessa Gearson than Dismore. I don't think that this is in any way a vindication of Dismores expenses, I just think people are so sick of him they can't be bothered looking. For my part, I wrote a letter to the Edgware & Mill Hill Times as a Labour Member six years ago telling him that he'd come unstuck. He wrote a letter back to the Times saying that if I was a Labour Party member, he'd never heard of me. He's done a fair bit as a constituency MP so I have fairly mixed views on him, but ultimately, if you carry on like this, it is bound to end in tears. I just wished he'd listened when I told him.

A careful analysis of the searches showed that there are two things people were looking for. Blogs on First Capital Connect and it's rubbish service and the disarray of the Future Shape project. Lots of people were emailing their friends and lots of people connected to Barnet Council were dropping by.

As to First Capital Connect. Tonight they were giving out "emergency timetables" with excuses for the disruption on. The new one is "it takes a year to train up drivers and we've lots of new trains". Here's the question. How long ago did they order the new trains? I suspect that it takes a bit longer than a year for a company to order a brand new fleet of trains. I could understand 5% of the trains not running but 50%? The advice from First Capital Connect? Use the Great Northern Route. It takes me 30 minutes in rush hour to get to Blackfriars on their train. It would take me nearly as long to drive to new Barnet, the nearest GN station. These people really don't know what they were doing.

The Lib Dem candidate for Hendon is Matthew Harris. Unlike Andrew Dismore, no Lib Dem MP's in London have claimed a second home allowance. Labour has had 12 years to sort out these awful train operators and haven't. If I were him, I'd stop by Mill Hill Station and Hendon and speak to a few commuters. They might just listen. If I were Matthew Harris, what would I tell the hard pressed commuters. I'd tell them that in 12 years, the service has got immeasurably worse. I'd tell them that John Prescott said when Labour took power "If we haven't sorted this mess out in 5 years we've failed" when asked about the rail privatisation. And once I'd told them about Labours record, I'd turn to the Tory Party. The local candidate is Matthew Offord. He is one of the architects of the Future Shape program, which is spectacularly unravelling as we speak. Matthew Offord spoke up for warden cuts at cabinet. He smugly told all of the public gallery that he knew better and that wardens weren't needed by many people in sheltered housing. A rather well to do octogenarian turned to me and used language that would make a docker blush at that. She then apologised to me profusely. But most of all, if I were Matthew Harris I'd tell them that rail privatisation was a Tory invention. The whole system was their last big policy initiative. All of the suffering is down to them. Someone asked me on the train who is more to blame, the Tories for bringing it in or Labour for not getting rid of it?

The sad truth is that they both are. I've not got a clue what the Lib Dems plans are with relation to Thameslink, but THEY CANNOT DO A WORSE JOB THAN THE TORIES OR LABOUR.

I wrote to Andrew Dismore about the awful FCC service. I printed his response on the BLOG.

Here is a highlight from his reply :-

Station refurbishment

Though this is not uppermost in passengers’ minds at present, I was pleased to see on my visit to Mill Hill, the following improvements over the last year:

· platforms resurfaced;

· new information screens;

· new lighting;

· new shelters;

· new platform name signs;

· removal of the graffiti on the platform canopy.

I added no comment as I was livid. How can the man be so out of touch? I read the paper today to find out the reason. He has a nice comfy flat in Notting Hill Gate. He doesn't have to suffer the crap service. How long does it take to get from Notting Hill Gate to Westminster? TFL says this

  • Departing:  Monday  23  November  2009 at: 20:29
  • From:  Notting Hill Gate

I'm sorry but anyone who thinks they should get a £65,000 subsidy to save themselves less than 20 minutes on their journey really has lost touch with reality. I suspect that if a few more MP's used the service, that little message in red under the journey may appear slightly less often.

So what am I saying here. I honestly don't believe that anyone who is aware of the track record of Matthew Offord at Barnet Council or Andrew Dismore in his expenses shenanigans could vote for either of these two. If I was Matthew Harris, the Lib Dem candidate, I'd tell everyone in the Borough my story. I really hope Matthew Harris does and I hope that EVERY SINGLE disaffected voter in Barnet listens to him, because that other party of protest, that I'm not going to name, will be a big beneficiary if the disgruntled Tories and Labourites stay at home. If you are tempted to stay at home for the next elections, think again. I'm not endorsing anyone here, but with two such tainted candidates, I suspect that for many people in Barnet, there really is only one choice at the moment.

Crap testicles connect - Andrew Dismore's updates

Mr Roger Tichborne

Our Ref: Transport e-Update 8.3: Thameslink disruption report 2
Please quote reference on all correspondence

20th November 2009

Dear Mr Tichborne,

I promised to keep you informed about the current Thameslink dispute, which is disrupting services from Mill Hill and Hendon stations.

I attach a copy of the letter of 13th November, which I received from the First Capital Connect overall head, Mary Grant. Yesterday (19th November), I met with a Thameslink senior executive, Larry Heyman, at Mill Hill station, to discuss the dispute, and also to get a more general brief on Thameslink plans.

The management and ASLEF, the drivers’ union, were meeting yesterday to try to resolve the dispute.

The background, as I think people now generally know, is that FCC ‘inherited’ the drivers’ contract from the Thameslink company, who lost the franchise to run the service a few years ago.

This contract provides for a four-day, 35-hour week, with five continuous days off every three weeks. The basic driver’s pay is £38,000. Average pay, with overtime and rest day working, is £50,000, and some earn £60,000.

Up till now, the shift pattern has not been a problem, as drivers have wanted to work more overtime than is actually available.

The dispute is over pay. FCC have offered a two-year deal, for the current financial year and next year. The current year is a zero rise; next year, the offer is either 3% or RPI plus 1% (whichever is higher), plus a one-off payment of £200 in April. The drivers want a rise for the current year.

The drivers have withdrawn their voluntary overtime working, which is needed to run the railway even in peak hours. I find it bizarre and incompetent, that peak hour services are dependent on such an arrangement, even if it has been satisfactory until now.

As a consequence, FCC have issued a new timetable, which is the one they can run based on drivers’ contractual hours. I am informed that FCC’s users’ group encouraged this, to give the travelling public a degree of certainty, during the disruption. If some drivers do report for overtime, extra trains can run – yesterday there were 8 extra, beyond the reduced timetable.

This timetable provides two trains per hour at all stations. The reduction in peak hours is just less than 50% of normal service; over the day as a whole, the service is running at 62% of normal. This pattern will continue, until the drivers resume normal working.

I have stressed, in no uncertain terms, that this is an unacceptable situation, and the importance of resolving the dispute both in the short term; and in the longer term, sorting out this ridiculous shift pattern.

Station refurbishment

Though this is not uppermost in passengers’ minds at present, I was pleased to see on my visit to Mill Hill, the following improvements over the last year:

· platforms resurfaced;

· new information screens;

· new lighting;

· new shelters;

· new platform name signs;

· removal of the graffiti on the platform canopy.

Further improvements I have raised as needed, are:

· weather protection for the ‘island’ platform shelter;

· better cleaning of the steps and underpass;

· better lighting in the Bunns Lane car park;

· train information screen at the Bunns Lane car park station entrance;

· better cleaning of the bus station/car park area.

Thameslink modernisation programme

The £5.5bn Government investment programme is progressing well. Work to extend the Mill Hill platform was completed earlier this year, and the platform exterior programme elsewhere is on time, as is the major rebuild at Blackfriars. The northern part of the line modernisation will be complete by 2012, as planned.

23 of the 24 new ‘electrostar’ trains are now in service, with the last arriving by early December (these trains are used for Mill Hill and Hendon in the early morning and late evening).

Since March, longer eight car trains are used in the morning peak hours, providing morning and evening peak services with 2,400 extra seats. Since March, FCC have also been able to put in service an extra six trains, transferred from Southern.

I hope this update has been of help to you, to know what is going on. As and when I hear anything more, I’ll let you know.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Dismore MP
Labour Member of Parliament for Hendon

First Capital Connect Update - A note from Andrew Dismore MP

I wrote to Mr Dismore on Thursday to express my dismay at how useless First Capital Connect have become. He wrote back on Friday via Email. Seems like the MD has been sacked. Can't say this surprises me.

Our Ref: Transport e-Update 8.2: Thameslink disruption
Please quote reference on all correspondence
November 2009
Dear Mr Tichborne,

I know many constituents will have been inconvenienced by the disruption of First Capital Connect Thameslink services today.

I thought you would wish to know that I raised the issue in the Commons this afternoon in a question to the Minister responsible for railways: I am enclosing a copy of my press release and Hansard extract which I thought you would like to see.

I have just been informed that the Managing Director of FCC left their employment last Friday. I was due to meet him in a few days time anyway, so I am now trying to arrange an early meeting with another senior executive of the company (in the absence of a new MD) to discuss the dispute as well as more general Thameslink matters.

As and when there is anything further to report, I will let you know!

Best wishes
Yours sincerely,

Andrew Dismore MP
Labour Member of Parliament for Hendon

I'm resigning from the Labour Party

I've had enough. I've been a Labour Party member for over 20 years, but I've had enough. Why? It's a culmination of many things. The last straw was a couple of weeks ago. I was at the gym and I was on a cycling machine. At my gym, we have large TV screens which show various channels. On one of these was SKY NEWS. The top story was the closure of a refugee camp nearl Calais. French Riot police, who looked for all the world like latter day stormtroopers were removing the refugees, bulldozers were tearing down the shanty town. They showed the faces of terrified young men, women and children as they were lead away. I thought to myself "This is no civilised way to treat such disenfranchised people". I hate bullying and this was state sponsored political bullying at it's worst. I thought to myself "I'm glad we don't behave like that". As I thought that, Alan Johnson, a LABOUR cabinet minister and seen by many as the heir to Tony Blair came on. What did he have to say? he said he was delighted by the actions.At that moment, I realised that myself and Labour no longer believe in the same things. I know refugees are not popular in some quarters, but most of this lot came from Afghanistan, a place where we are fighting a war. If we are going to engage in military campaigns in far away places, it is inevitable that we'll face issues such as these. If I was an Afghan living in Helmand and I didn't want to be a fundamentalist Taliban Muslim, and I saw the British army in my town, I'd probably decide to come here as well. I'd probably want my wife and children to live in a peaceful tolerant country rather than a warzone. Alan Johnson's comments show a total lack of compassion and understanding. This is not what the Labour party should stand for.

Let me make a couple of points. I hold local Labour Councillors such as Alison Moore in high esteem for the work they do. I doubt that you could get a cigarette paper between her and my views on just about any important social matter, but the people such as Johnson and Mandleson at national level just don't believe in what I believe or stand for what I stand for. When a Labour business secretary such as Mandleson proposes privatising the Royal Mail, how can someone like me associate themselves with that. I believe in progressive left wing politics, I totally support Ken Livingstone's progressive alliance, but I'm sorry I cannot support a party where senior people condone such actions.

This has been a very difficult issue for me as we desperately need to get the Tories out of Barnet Council. Labour will quite clearly be a part of that process. I believe that they will only achieve this by distancing themselves from national policies. Don't get me wrong, I will still strongly support all Labour candidates who believe in what I consider to be core socialist values. I just find that there are too many things which I fundamentally disagree with to classify myself as a "Labour member". I hope that the party will realise it's mistakes and when that happens I'll rejoin.

As to the tone of this blog. It won't change. I'll still urge people to vote Labour in Hendon at the next election. Andrew Dismore is a good MP (albiet one who I have had disagreements with). His opponent, Matthew Offord is a man who left a trail of disaster in his wake when he was Deputy Leader. He may do a fine widow twanky impersonation of Brian Coleman, which is really rather funny, he may write a nice blog about sailing, which is interesting and informative, but he is useless at being a politician and would be a liability. As to locally in Mill Hill. We have two Lib-Dems and one Tory John Hart. I like John Hart, I'd say he's the best of the bunch for Barnet Tories, but he's followed the party line so I'm afraid he has to go. As such I'll be supporting the Lib Dems in Mill Hill. On the wider Barnet scene, I'd urge people to do the following. I cannot believe that real local Tories can be happy with Mike Freer and Brian Coleman. I'd urge them to stand as independent Conservatives in seats such as Totteridge where the opposition stand no chance. I'd actively campaign for any  independent who stood for honest, transparent administration on this blog and give them whatever platform I could. I doubt the Tories will lose in Barnet next time, due to the national scene,  but I intend to try and help some sort of cross party effort to clean up Barnet and make it a Borough to be proud of.

I hope that Labour, Lib-Dem and Independent Conservatives can unite to solve our systemic problems. We may disagree on much, but lets get the administration into the open. Lets support the following :-

* Recording of all open Council meetings
* Only hold meetings in private when 80% of Councillors agree
* Bring back management by committees of councillors and scale back the powers of the Cabinet
* Put all expenses, gifts & hospitality and other relevent information on line (as has been done for the GLA)
* Change the Council Constitution so that the Mayor requires 75% of Councillors to elect them
* Reform the Standards process to weed out malicious or frivalous complaints, but to take real action against Councillors who can't behave themselves. Allow complainants the right to address the committee in Standards hearings.
* Put all council invoices over £2,000 on line to ensure best value for the people of Barnet

This has been a very difficult decision for me to make. It is in no way a reflection on any Labour member or councillor in Barnet. I must emphasise that Labour's Barnet Councillors have done absolutely nothing which I could criticise during the tenure of this blog. I just can't belong to a party which has the current mob at the top any longer. Sorry.

Andrew Dismore & Expenses : The Barnet Eye Response

Dan Hope alluded to a conspiracy as to the way I posted Andrew Dismore's letter regarding his expenses. I just published it with no comment whatsoever and a curt "Draw your own conclusions". As I explained in my response to Dan, I thought that was an appropriate way to deal with such a letter, with a follow up response blog from me.

As Andrew Dismore is often keen to say, the devil is in the detail. Having read Andrews letter, he has probably written nothing in it with which I can take issue. What does this tell us? It tells us that when it comes to writing letters, Andrew is an excellent lawyer and I'm a dyslexic guitarist in a punk rock band. It reminds me of a story one of my teachers told me. A well educated athiest was up before the court for heresy at a time when the punishment was death. They asked him what he thought of the teachings of Jesus Christ. The athiest responded "I can say with all my heart and in a clear conscience that I agree with every word Jesus wrote in the bible". A suitably impressed court dismissed the case. When challenged in later life as to how the athiest could square his statement with his views, the athiest responded "Jesus didn't write a single recorded word, he spoke them and other people documented them".

The point I'm making here is that the problem with Andrews letter is not what he says, it's what he doesn't say. I fundamentally disagree with any London MP ever claiming for second homes. He may have claimed less than most but he is shouldn't have claimed anything. Full stop, end of story. It is all very well criticising others for their claims for Moats, but you should look at yourself first. Open the windows of your glass house before throwing stones.

Andrew talks about his 50% pay cut. He chose the job and there were plenty of other people who wanted it. Rightly or wrongly, people expect MP's to set a good example. There is an implicit admission that the second home allowance is wrong. If that is the case, it should never have been claimed. It reminds me of someone my father knew who employed a "financial advisor" to look after a substancial amount of money. After 2 years the friend was tipped off that the advisor had played the market with the money and made a huge profit. When questioned, the advisor returned the money with zero interest. A solicitor was contacted who advised the friend that "He returned all of the money, there was no contract to say he'd actually pay interest, so technically he's done nothing wrong" The solicitor went on to say "You are lucky, in cases like these, usually you lose the lot!". When I read the defence that MP's use "It was within the rules" - I know how my Dad's friend felt. When I read Andrew Dismore's letter, I understood his feelings when he was told "You are lucky". Sure Andrew has not broken the rules, sure compared to some he's been relatively restrained. Sure his letter contains many of the things that I think we'd like to have seen all along, such as on line access to expenses. I just can't help feeling let down.

Having given my feelings about Andrews letter, I must say that he appears to be getting his house in order. He is putting his claims on line, which must be applauded. This is the minimum I expect to see. There is a very interesting point which this has raised. Andrew's opponent for the Conservatives in Hendon is Matthew Offord, who until recently was the Deputy Leader. The Leader of the Council is Mike Freer, who is the Tory PPC for Finchley.

These two have a great opportunity to show whether we can trust them. Put all Councillor expense claims On Line as Andrew Dismore has done for his MP's expenses. This is an ideal opportunity to see if our prospective MP's are any better. If Mike Freer and Matthew Offord refuse full disclosure, we will have to assume that like their Tory colleagues with Moats, they have something to hide.

Andrew Dismore & Expenses

Andrew Dismore wrote to me to explain his position on expenses. I thought I'd publish it here without comment. Make your own mind up.

20th May 2009

Dear Mr Tichborne,

In view of the widespread concern about parliamentary allowances I thought I should write to you with my views.

May I firstly start by saying that I have been as shocked and horrified as the public has been, over some of the claims put forward by some MPs. Indeed, people forget sometimes that I, and other MPs, are taxpayers, too, and do not like to see public money misspent any more than you do.

The recent revelations clearly show the need for change, and I have put forward my own suggestions for reform to the Committee on Standards in Public Life (the “Kelly” committee) including a complete abolition of the “Second Homes Allowance”, to be replaced with a system of renting or hotel accommodation which would overcome these difficulties. This might work out a bit more expensive for the taxpayer, but I believe such a price is necessary to restore the reputation of Parliament.

Having said that, I have always been open about my own allowances claims: By way of example, please feel free to read my most recent press releases, issued of 12th March (click here) and 15th April (click here), giving the background explanation, where appropriate. You will see, amongst other things, that I have renounced the right to claim the “second home allowance”.

I do not have (and never have had) a country house, with or without a moat, a tennis court, swimming pool or chandelier. My trouser press was a gift from my mother, and not part of any claim!

I did not go into politics for money. When I was a local government councillor, my very modest responsibility allowance (£1200 per year, a pittance compared to what leading members of Barnet Council claim) was entirely donated, in full, towards providing a service for my ward constituents.

When I stood for Parliament, I knew I would far worse off than in my previous occupation as a solicitor. The pay cut was almost 50%, for almost double the hours of work. I accepted this willingly, because I went into politics to serve the community and to try to make life better for all, individually, locally and nationally; not to enrich myself.

Indeed, since I was elected, I have spent tens of thousands of pounds of my own money, supporting my constituency office, particularly in the early years of my time in Westminster, when the then staffing allowance was not enough to provide the quality of service I believe you, my constituents, are entitled to expect.

The Daily Telegraph has been trawling through MPs’ allowances claim forms, and supporting receipts. The only comment on mine so far, has been to compare me favourably, with the Conservative MP for Chipping Barnet, in the neighbouring constituency. I note it was only after this exposure, that she decided to publish her returns, and (in 6 month’s time) follow my lead in giving up the second home allowance.

In relation to my own large pile of documentation, unsolicited, I invited the Evening Standard to send a reporter to read through them and to take whatever notes or copies he wished (though publication would obviously need to exclude personal data like account and card numbers).

I have offered similar access to the Hendon and Edgware Times.

I believe that the Evening Standard reporter was satisfied that there was nothing untoward in any of the claim forms or supporting documentation: I am sure if there had been, it would have been reported in the Evening Standard, by now!

I am starting a new section on my website, on which my expenses returns will appear regularly, as soon as possible after their submission (click here). As to the historic records, which the Evening Standard inspected, I asked the Commons authorities if there was any way I could make them public, electronically, before they are formally published by the House in a few weeks’ time. The volume of paper is such that it is not practical to publish them in any other way. I was told there was no easy way of putting them on the internet, but once they are published I will then try to create a link from my website. The “journalist” inspection is the best I can do in the meantime.

As to other Parliamentarians, it is quite clear that there have been some appalling abuses carried out, for which I believe that we have all been found guilty by association, but inevitably we must all share the common criticism, of not having amended the rules before.

I am a member of the Commons Standards and Privileges Committee, and we have made a number of recommendations, which regrettably were not all taken up, for example relating to the designation of which home should be the second home.

One of our most recent recommendations was that MPs should be taken entirely outside the allowance setting process, and this should be left to the Kelly committee. We tabled unanimous, cross party, amendments to this effect for the debates in April, which explains my votes, then, as the Government accepted one of those amendments but not the others.

In the past, I have supported disclosure of MPs’ allowances, contrary to what my opponent suggests. I did not support the disclosure of MPs’ private constituency correspondence which was at risk from the Freedom of Information Act. This also explains my votes on that issue at the time.

I also think it is fair to say that some of the newspaper reports have been somewhat disingenuous and have not given a full picture of the circumstances of particular claims; and there has been an element of party political bias or choreography in the way the Daily Telegraph, a Conservative leaning newspaper, has released the information.

For example, while focussing on the minutiae of some of the “furniture” claims, they have virtually ignored the claims by the Leader of the Opposition, a multi-millionaire, for almost £24,000 a year just for his mortgage interest payments, which have passed without criticism.

My political neighbour, the Conservative MP for Chipping Barnet, has also claimed substantial sums for the purchase of her second home.

When I was claiming for the “second home allowance” for my Burnt Oak flat, I claimed for running costs only. I did not claim anything for the cost of buying it.

Nevertheless, this cannot justify in any way the outlandish cases that have been brought to the public’s attention. It is right that action is taken, and I am pleased the Prime Minister has suspended offenders from the Labour Party.

I do not think it would be appropriate for me to comment further on individual cases, because, as a member of the Standards and Privileges Committee, I may well be called upon to be one of those passing sentence, if the Commissioner for Parliamentary Standards, who is an independent investigator, reports to us on breaches of the rules, which may well have been committed despite protestations to the contrary.

It is necessary that urgent action is taken, and I am pleased that interim measures are now being proposed, pending the Kelly review.

I hope, though, that this gives you an indication of my own concern on the issue, and the fact that I have personally tried to be as open as I possibly can as far as my own claims are concerned, which I published long before the Commons required it, each year.

If you have any specific questions about my own claims, I will certainly do the best I can to respond to them.

Yours sincerely,
