Daniel Hope Funeral Arrangements and Tributes

Former Barnet Councillor and Blogger Daniel Hope tragically passed away earlier this week at the age of only 44.

As many friends, colleagues and associates of Dan read this blog, I've been asked to publish the funeral arrangements. The funeral will take place 11am today (Friday 13 Jan) at

Bushey Jewish Cemetery
Little Bushey Lane
Bushey
Herts WD23 3TN.

All will be most welcome.

Perhaps the best tribute to Dan was not surprisingly written by his friend and co-conspiritor David Miller AKA Don't Call Me Dave - www.notthebarnettimes.co.uk/2017/01/heckling-from-heaven.html

There have also been nice tributes in the Barnet Press and The Barnet Times.  The Evening Standard has also been tweeting and put an article online.

In his short life, perhaps the thing Dan will probably best be remembered for his dedication to filming Council business and other public events in Barnet. I think the best personal tribute I can make is put a link to his video channel on Vimeo.  Dan posted a total of 466 videos on the site. That is a huge body of work. Without doubt the loss of Dan and his video camera is something that will do nothing for transparency in politics in Barnet. Whatever disagreements anyone had with Dan, one can only applaud his efforts to improve council transparency.

Maybe a fitting memorial would be for the Council to make arrangements for a proper Barnet Council video channel, to ensure that all meetings are available for Barnet residents to review, in his honour. In line with Dan's views on such matters, maybe this could be run by volunteers and perhaps could be done as a  joint venture with Middlesex University or local schools. Such a channel would provide young people with an opportunity to get experience of filming/editing and broadcasting and would be a huge innovation. The one thing Dan proved beyiond doubt is that a video record of Barnet Council meetings is a highly useful resource. Lets make sure that this lesson isn't lost with his passing.

Dan Hope AKA The Barnet Bugle RIP

The Barnet Eye today learned of the sad news that former Barnet Councillor and Barnet Blogger Daniel Hope AKA The Barnet Bugle has passed away. We send our condolences to his family at this time. The news was broken in an email by Conservative Councillor Joan Scannell who said "I have just received the very sad news that Daniel Hope, after a period of serious illness, has passed away." His former Conservative Council colleague, Councillor Hugh Rayner added "Shocking news. A lovely guy. Always a worthy adversary."

Several Barnet Councillors have added tweets about the passing of Mr Hope.

Porky Season

It's officially Porkie season ! There is a Council  election in three weeks. This is the time when all of those councillors who you haven't seen for the last four years suddenly come out and suddenly want to meet the plebs (that's you and me my friend). This time four years ago, I was running for the council myself. In hindsight, failing to get elected was the best thing ever happened to me. I was standing for the Lib Dems in Mill Hill ward. I had been a Labour member until 2009, but resigned in disgust at Alan Johnsons comments about the closure of the Sangatte refugee camp by French riot police. In hindsight after all the Porkies of the Blair era, it is a bit strange that the thing which tipped me over the edge was something that didn't even register with 99.9% of the electorate.  I jumped ship. If I'd not lost, I'd be representing the coalition in Mill Hill.

I was outraged at a big Porkie told by the Tories in Mill Hill. They put out a leaflet claiming the Mill Hill Lib Dems were planning a massive football stadium for Kentish Town FC at Copthall. Given that Kentish Town FC play in a minor league and get 30 fans per game it was bizarre, but the Porkie did the trick. I was outraged and it spurred me on to try and knock on every door I could. In hindsight I thought it was quite funny. This time the Tories have got even worse. We've had letters in the press from Tory Councillor Reuben Thompstone telling porkies about a disabled school and Richard Cornelius telling Porkies about Friern Barnet library.

Wheras at the last election I really got upset about these porkies, this time around, I can't really be anything other than amused. Last time I was living the campaign, this time I'm sitting on the sidelines. I have still not decided who I will vote for. I like Sury Khatri, our local Tory candidate who is a very decent and honest man. I like Jeremy Davies, the local Lib Dem Candidate who served 12 on the Council until 2014. I like Alisdair Hill, the other Lib Dem candidate I've met. Sian John, the Labour cndidate who appeared at the Mill Hill hustings seemed like a very decent person. In the local elections you get three votes.  Then there are the Euro's. I haven't even seen a leaflet through the door.

The sad thing is that elections have become a  festival of porkies. Manifestos are not really statement of intentions, they are sales ploys designed to dupe unsophisticated voters. The Blair administration perfected the art of designing a manifesto to say what the public wanted. My cynicism knows no bounds these days. In Barnet the Tories completely duped the electorate in 2010. They didn't mention One Barnet Outsourcing in their manifesto, they didn't mention the huge hike in pay they awarded themselves. They didn't mention the illegal hike in CPZ parking charges. They didn't mention the abolition of Pay and display parking in Barnet High Streets. They didn't mention the huge cuts to services for the disabled. They didn't mention a huge Rugby stadium for Saracens RFC. All of these things have caused huge resentment locally. This time around, the Tories thus far haven't even bothered to release a manifesto. This doesn't surprise me. As far as I can see, you could write the Tory Manifesto on the back of a fag packet.  It would say

"We will keep Council Tax down, we will try and get as many poor people to leave Barnet as possible, we'll shaft those who rely on council services and we'll be alright Jack"

The strategy is simple. Make sure that they drive out enough poor pople to always have a Tory majority in Council and get rid of anyone who costs the council tax payers money. That way, those of us who live in Ivory Towers, can keep the unwashed hordes at arms length.

Sadly there will be collateral damage. Things like the Green Belt are under threat. Streets fill up with rubbish, cemeteries go untended, roads have potholes in summer and are ungritted in Winter. But so what, you get a 3p day tax cut. The Barnet Eye does not tell you how to vote, if you think 3p a day is worth potholes, dirty streets, disabled people left distraught and untended, huge hikes in Parking fees then you should vote Tory. If you think telling a few porkies is all part of the game, then I'd suggest you join up and get in on the act. If you have half a brain and are a bit ambitious, you'll do very well in the Tory Party. If you join up today and help out, in four years time you'll get the chance to be a councillor. Then you can earn over £10,000 a year simply by turning up for 2 short council meetings a year. You will also get a few half decent jollies. They are quite a sociable bunch, as revelaed by this tweet by the a council cabinet member out with the  deputy council leader campaigning this week.

Having a good pint in the Griffin in Whetstone with - discussing our excellent campaign

What is interesting is just how many of these previously invisible candidates suddenly are being very active. Tory Bloggers have also got a lot more active. We've also seen the same patter in activity of Tory Bloggers. Have a look at this list of the number of blogs posted by Tory Blogger "The Barnet Bugle" since the last election in May 2010. As you will see April 2014 had the most blogs since April 2010 (just before the last election). In our sidebar you'll see no such pattern.

That is the way the local Tories work. They go into "Election Mode". The rest of the Barnet bloggers are here come rain or shine, year in, year out

You see the difference between this blog and an "aligned" blog is that we report on what we care about, we don't think that "Oh, there's an election, we'd better get off our butts and write blogs"

Anyway, lets cut to the chase. Mr Daniel Hope, who writes the Barnet Bugle, left the following comment on Mrs Angry's website, in response to the blogs posted by Mrs A on her website and myself here, concerning our posts about the state of Hendon Cemetery.

Daniel Hope said...
Mrs A is there really so little you can think of trumpeting about your party's election campaign that you - in a coordinated attack with your pro-Labour blogger buddies - sink down into the gutter to play politics with the dead?

You and Roger writing the desperate articles and the increasingly preposterous Mr Reasonable tweeting the story at national media figures and broadcasters.

Spinning and twisting a mundane story about managing benches into accusation of 'selling the dead' for a few Labour votes is the surely the worst type of negative campaigning?

Mr Hope accuses us of "playing politics with the dead" because we are upset about what Capita are doing to the cemetery where we both have parents buried. I have no idea whether Mr Hope's parents are still alive, or whether he got/gets on with them. I loved mine to bits. I miss them with all my heart and I will not stand by why Capita desecrate their final resting place. If Mr Hope wishes to piss on their grave by making cheap comments, so be it. He may think he's being clever or funny, he may think he's doing his Tory mates a favour, but I find Hope's comment to display a total lack of empathy with his fellow man. There is no desperation in the articles, just an extreme sense of disgust at what has happened.

Anyone who knows myself will know that I don't do desperate, I just say things as I see them. In the case of the issue of Hendon Cemetery, I think what is happening is wrong, full stop. That Mr Hope simply sees it as a bit of knockabout politics shows his moral turpitude. I visited my parents grave on Sunday. The cemetery was in acomplete state. The bench issue is just the cherry on the top for crassness.

As I told the local press (http://www.times-series.co.uk/news/11197031._Disgusting____memorial_benches_to_be_removed_from_crematorium/?ref=var_0), my parents, grandparents, godmother, business partner and in laws are buried in Hendon Cemetery. On Thursday I go to a good friends funeral at Hendon. If anyone thinks I don't care about this issue, then they clearly don't know me. I don't belong to any party. I don't get paid to write a blog. I simply do it because I've lived in Mill Hill all of my life, my kids go to school here and my mum and dad are buried here. There will be a lot of Porkies told in Barnet over the nexr few weeks There will be lots of spin and distortion. There won't be any here.

Labour Councillor defects to Tories

Congratulations to Cllr Sodha on becoming Barnets newest Tory Councillor following her defecton from the Barnet Labour Party. The Barnet Eye believes this to be a very positive move for the London Borough of Barnet as in our opinion, this has raised the average IQ of both the Barnet Labour and Conservative groups.

Rather amusingly, when I tweeted this earlier, Ex Tory Councillor Dan Hope posted the following tweet.

Luckily for Dopey Dan, Mr Mustard rode in to his rescue and gave him a lesson in elementary maths ! If Dan needs a good maths tutor, we can recommend a very good one, who helped our son pass his SATS when he was at primary school.

To be fair to the Tories ( I am in a very good mood), they probably have the two Councillors with the highest IQ's in the council. John Hart and Sury Khatri are extremely intelligent and well qualified gentlemen and always good value for a private conversation. I suppose you can conclude from this, that one or two of the others, haven't impressed me, to draw my conclusion about the average. (Dan if you require an explanation of this statement, I suggest you ask Mr Mustard privately and spare yourself the embarrassment of another daft public tweet).

Sadly I couldn't make the BAPS meeting tonight. A guest blog would be most welcome if anyone did attend.

Has this Barnet Troll got a conscience?

Since I started writing this blog in 2008, I've come across all manner of people. There are some people I have the highest admiration for. Some people humble me with their commitment and passion to do the right thing in the face of adversity. Sadly I have also come across some despicable people, people who sometimes undermine my strong faith in human nature.

I try my very hardest never to hold feelings of bitterness, hatred and resentment towards my fellow man, because these are negative and will always do you far more damage than the person who you feel these feelings towards. There are times when I am nearly pushed to the absolute edge. As we approach the Christmas season, it is vital we put these feelings aside and concentrate on what is good in the world. It is a time when we should fight for justice. Whatever your beliefs and whatever your religion, the sad truth about the Christmas story (whether you believe it or think it is a fantasy) is that the baby we remember did not have a happy ending. His life was taken by a brutal state as a result of lies, injustice and jealousy. Whatever else you may or may not believe, there are millions of innocent babies born in our history, who have died as the result of lies, jealousy and injustice for holding views that people have sought to suppress. Ultimately the way to a better world is through all of us learning mutual respect and learning to consider other peoples thoughts and feelings and circumstances before we act.

So what has that got to do with a particularly nasty cyber bully in Barnet? Well the papers are full of stories of teenagers driven over the edge by cyberbullies. Sadly many teenagers are unaware of the impact of their actions. They lack the life experience to understand the consequences of saying nasty things and making things up on the internet.

As I mentioned above, I have met some people through my blog that I am in awe of. One such person is John Sullivan. John is a septugenarian in very poor health. Him and his wife have a daughter called Susan, who is 50 and has downs syndrome. I also have a cousin called Theresa who has downs syndrome, so I am only too aware of the challenges faced by the families of people in Johns situation. I try and take my cousin on holiday every year and as a result, I see the challenges John faces every day at first hand. Susan and Theresa were friends and used to attend a centre in Mill Hill for many years. Theresa moved to Barnet and so now goes elsewhere.

John Sullivan with his Daughter Susan in 2011
John has fought passionately for the rights of disabled people in Barnet. He organised the Your Choice Barnet week. He arranged for many of his friends, fellow carers, disabled people and other campaigners to write blogs highlighting the challenges faced by the Barnet disabled community. When I speak about such issues, I can only scratch the surface and speculate. The people who wrote these blogs are at the coal face of social care. A little appreciated fact is that these family carers save the Barnet taxpayer a fortune. If they were heartless and simply handed the people they care for to the Council to look after, the council would have a legal responsibility to assume the role of carer and the social budget would have to increase massively. This could only be paid for by a hike in taxes. So when John Sullivan and his fellow campaigners call for better transport and better facilities for the disabled, he is not asking out of a selfish desire to fleece the taxpayer. He is asking so that him and his fellow carers can cope. When Susan is at a daycentre, John and his wife can do the things that you or I can take for granted. When Susan is happy, she is joy to be with and her care is easy. When she is upset, she is a different proposition. That is why it is vital that people like John are supported.

John is not a saint. Over the years, I've got to know him. He's a working class boy from Burnt Oak who has done well for himself. When he was a lad, he went to Watling Boys club. His regular watering hole was the Bald Faced Stag in Burnt Oak, a pub well known for its raucous atmosphere. His family are steeped in army traditions and recently John was telling me of the experiences of his nephews in the various theaters of war that the army has found itself in. John has a very close and protective family network and is lucky that like many such families, he has plenty of support. I don't see eye to eye with John on many issues. John calls a spade a spade and if he disagrees, he says "You are talking b*ll*cks". Unlike me, he can't afford to take a theoritical view of the situation in Barnet. As he has pointed out on numerous occasions "while you lot are holding meetings and waffling, there are people out there at their wits end". When he sent me one guest  blog for submission, I suggested that describing one particular councillor as "sick and evil" was a tad strong. John replied "can you suggest another way of describing behaviour that causes vulnerable and disabled people distress". John doesn't beat about the bush. He calls things how he sees them and expects other people to be equally straightforward. When I discussed what he had to say in his blogs, he said "look, what you've got to realise is that everything I say is the truth and I can back it up. If you simply tell the truth, then you have nothing to fear". Mr Sullivan is not a left wing subversive. He speaks with enormous pride of his hephews service in the armed forces and the their efforts on our behalf in the various combat areas. He is looking forward to seeing them over Christmas, to catch up on their latest news and the latest stories. That is the sort of man John Sullivan is. That is why I respect him.

Your Choice Barnet week came about because John felt that the disabled were a forgotten underclass in Barnet. When Barnet Council sought to fleece motorists, by hiking prices of CPZ permits, the law came down on the side of the motorists and the hike were reversed. When the Council hiked parking prices in the High Streets, Helen Michael led a rebellion and the council backed down. The Tories in the Town hall realised that the traders were there core voters, so the Councillors may lose their jobs. Parking prices were slashed and the meters have returned. Sadly for the disabled, it is a different matter. At the task and finish group, Councillor Brian Salinger, a former Tory leader of Barnet Council stated that he had no problem with "making a profit out of services for the disabled". So motorists and businesses are protected, but the disabled are up to be fleeced. When Brian Salinger was Leader of the Council, his right hand man and enforcer was ex Councillor Daniel Hope. Hope represented Brunswick Park ward. Sadly for Mr Salinger, Mr Hope was not very good at this role. His local ward tired of Hope and replaced him with the lovely Lisa Rutter, Hope was banished to an unwinnable ward for the 2006 election. The role of the chief whip is to maintain order, but sadly for Brian Salinger, Hope had missed the fact that his colleagues were plotting and the day after the 2006 election, Salinger was sacked by the Tories as leader and replaced by Mike Freer, now MP for Finchley.

Since then, Hope has set up a succession of blogs and twitter accounts. The latest of these is the http://www.barnetconservatives.com/ website and the https://twitter.com/BarnetGrassCons website. Interestingly, the majority of the 18 followers of Mr Hope on this twitter account are actually local bloggers, and other people on the left. Mr Hope has had a steady stream of juicy tip offs from his former allies in the Tory ranks in Barnet, which have often been unhelpful to the Freer regime. Mr Hope has been a useful way for the anti Freer faction of the Conservatives to get their views across, without getting their hands dirty.

In his recent blogs, John Sullivan and his fellow carers have been less than complimentary about Mr Salinger and his comments. They feel badly let down by the local politicians, over the cuts to services being enacted by Your Choice Barnet. As many people will realise, there is a council election next year, and the last thing that councillors want is bad press, especially from a group such as the disabled which attracts widespread sympathy. One of the tactics that is tried and trusted for unscrupulous people to dismiss genuine concerns, is to pretend that criticisms are not genuine and are simply part of some other campaign, orchestrated by people merely seeking political gains. Of course anyone who actually bothered to read the guest blogs would realise that Mr Sullivan and his fellow bloggers were simply seeking a better life for their loved ones.

On Friday, Mr Hope used his BarnetGrassCons twitter account to mount such an attack on John Sullivan and his campaign for disabled rights in Barnet (the comment at the bottom was first). As you can see this clearly implies that this blog was "bought" and written by "cranks" . The second tweet implies(completely without any evidence) that the campaign was orchestrated by the Barnet Alliance. The third tweet calls the Barnet Alliance Cranks. Clearly when Hope posted the first tweet, he was referring to Your Choice Barnet Week and the posts of Mr Sullivan and the other YCB week bloggers.

  1. Twist and spin all you like, what tabloid gossip bloggers do! are the cranks.
  2. Clearly been taken over by the cranky 'anti Tory' this week. Maybe you waive ur fees to SETs?
  3. So who's bought your blog for next week? Unions? Other cranks? Labour Party?

When John Sullivan saw these comments hewas livid. John Sullivan contacted Hope. Hope admitted that he hadn't bothered to read the Your Choice Barnet week blogs. Here is this admission in an email to Mr Sullivan

Please ask Mr Tichbourne to provide you with the evidence that I have called you, specifically, a 'crank' (as opposed to my comments about BAPS writing his blog for a week). It is clear from your email that your are going on hearsay or you would have quoted what I had apparently said.

Until he raised your name I was unaware you had even written something during BAPS week. Are you on their Executive now?

So Mr Hope launched an attack on John Sullivan and his fellow campaigners, having not even read their blogs. To me this a staggering admission. These comments were posted on Friday, the day John posted his second YCB week. It had John Sullivans name and picture on the title (Your Choice Barnet Week - Thank you for listening ...).
 .
Mr Sullivan sought a meeting with Daniel Hope to explain to him why he was mistaken (a not unreasonable request). Mr Sullivan had hoped that Mr Hope might realise he'd made a mistake and correct his misleading tweets. For the absence of doubt, the Barnet Alliance for Public Services were not in any way associated with the Your Choice Barnet week. John Sullivan is not a member and he is not on their executive. In actual fact, as Mr Hope knows well, Mr Sullivan is not at all well. He is in his seventees and is undergoing treatment for a serious illness. He was so unwell that he could not address a recent council meeting and asked a friend to read a prepared speech, by agreement with the committee chair. This was featured in his first blog

So how did Mr Hope respond to Mr Sullivans request to meet him? Sadly rather than realise he'd made a mistake and apologise, he responded by claiming Mr Sullivan was threatening him and he was worried for his own safety. He suggested that unless Mr Sullivan stopped harrassing him, he would contact the authorities. To me, the concept that Mr Hope would be scared of a man who is in his seventies and so ill that he can't speak at a council meeting is ridiculous. It was clear to me that the intention of Mr Hope's email was to intimidate Mr Sullivan. One has to ask, what sort of a man threatens a man in his seventies, with a life threatening illness, five days before Christmas.

Let us remind ourselves that John Sullivan has a wife and a disabled daughter. He should be spending his time preparing for the festive season and keeping Susan happy. Whilst John is committed to the fight for disabled rights, his wife is highly concerned about the effect that Mr Hope's campaign may be having on John. The last thing he needs is stress. Mr Sullivan contacted me yesterday, forwarding the emails he'd exchanged with Mr Hope. I emailed Mr Hope and suggested that given Mr Sullivans age and ill health, maybe he should reconsider his spiteful campaign, especially as he'd clearly got his facts wrong.

Sadly, like all bullies, Mr Hope didn't think "hang on, maybe I've overstepped the mark". Nope, he unashamedly posted another tweet denigrating and taunting an elderly, unwell man.

Just had to block two users following very unsavoury trolling incident involving repeated threats to turn up at my home address.

I wonder whether Mr Hope has any conscience at all. Just to recap, he posted a series of tweets calling guest bloggers campaigning on behalf of their loved ones cranks. He accused Mr Sullivan of being on the executive of an organisation he doesn't belong to. He claimed I'd taken money to publish guest blogs. To compound all of this he admitted that he hadn't read the blogs which he was attacking in his comments.

Now I am quite used to being abused by Mr Hope in his various guises on Twitter. I really don't mind and try and give as good as I get (which has resulted in Mr Hope throwing his toys out of the pram on more than one occasion). It is however a completely different matter when he starts trying to bully a sick man in his seventies into submission. The dilemma I have is whether I should ignore the lies put about by Daniel Hope. If I do, he will say "he didn't deny it, so it must be true". When Mr Hope claims that he's been harrassed and people have threatened to turn up at his home, he doesn't say that the person in question was a sick man who was in his seventies and who simply asked if he could have a chat about some inaccuracies in his comments, so they could be corrected. In his weasel words, he claims that BAPS organised YCB week without a shred of truth. He also calls BAPS cranks, which is itself another slur. People unfamiliar with Barnet Politics should be aware that BAPS organised a very successful Peoples question time last year, which featured the Leader of Barnet Council Richard Cornelius and the other two party leaders. It was packed to the rafters and Mr Cornelius complemented BAPS on their efforts for organising it.Mr Hope was present at this meeting and haas attended many events organised by BAPS.  Mr Hope may disagree with the views of individual BAPS members, but to label everyone involved as Cranks is plain ignorant. I disagree with many of the policies of the current Tory administration, but I don't call them cranks as a group. If a specific individual says something ridiculous, then fine say so, but Mr Hope attacks people without even reading what they have to say (as admitted in his letter to Mr Sullivan). What sort of way is that to behave? One has to say that if this is the way Mr Hope conducts his business, it is unsurprising that he got deselected in Chipping Barnet and his Boss Mr Salinger got the sack.

As I said at the start of this blog, I try not to get upset at peoples behaviour and I try and see the good in all people, especially in the season of goodwill. Sometimes this is difficult.

Barnet Conservatives, sexism and misogyny

Yesterday I saw the following tweet from Louise Burfitt-Dons

As the Tories at the GLA have a state sponsored spin doctor, I immediately asked Louise if she supported this arrangement. I then decided to look at what she had to say on other issues.

Louise is hoping to stand for the Conservative Party as a Euro MP candidate. You can read all about her views, they are quite interesting here http://www.louise4london.com/, I found her views on the role of feminism and women in the Conservative Party most interesting - http://conservativehome.blogs.com/platform/2013/05/louise.html.  As I read this article, I was intrigued to speculate as to what Louise might think of her Tory colleagues in the London Borough of Barnet Capitaville. Louise might be rather surprised to find that Barnet is a hotbed of sexism and misogyny. Last year we had then senior Tory Brian Coleman call female members of the public "two old hags" during a council meeting. Coleman was not reprimanded, in fact most of his male colleagues chuckled at this sexist comment. Later in the year, Coleman beat up local businesswoman Helen Michael. He was not censured by the local party. The affair became so embarrassing that the national party stepped in and suspended his membership. Coleman subsequently pleaded guilty to the assault. Not a single word of apology from the local Conservatives to Ms Michael has been spoken. The sexism is not just limited to senior levels. Local Tory blogger Daniel Hope (a former Tory Councillor, deselected from Brunswick Park ward for his inability to work with Councillor Tambourides) left a highly sexist and patronising comment on Twitter

The "Psychic Babs" he refers to is Barbara Horn-Jacobson. Barbara is the media spokesperson for the Barnet Alliance for Public Services. Barbara is a well qualified professional project manager. Hope seeks to belittle her and patronise her in such a sexist manner as he clearly lacks the wit or intelligence to actually have a counter argument to her criticisms of the local Conservative group policies. Like many sexist trolls on the internet, if a woman makes a sensible argument, Hope responds with sexist insults, belittling the intended victim, in a manner designed purely to intimidate them into shutting up.

It will not come as much of a surprise that both Coleman and his old mate Hope have worked together to gang up on poor unsuspecting locals, spreading all manner of inaccurate gossip and distortions, here is one such example, where they have monstered the North Finchley town team (a group including many community minded local people, with no political affiliation).

In her article Louise says
The majority of conservative voters who happen to be women tend to be pragmatic, realistic, family-friendly, perspicacious, and - if you consider putting the needs of their husbands, children or dependent relatives ahead of their own gratification and ego if and when the time calls for it – super smart. In this way the MAHM The group Mothers at Home Matter, which wants the Government to tax families on the basis of household, rather than the individual, have a strong point. They need support.
This is a fine aspiration, but while Barnet male chauvenist Tories such as Coleman and Hope continue their playground level insults, surely no sensible female Tory would consider voting for them. Helen Michael, who Brian Coleman assaulted is a highly intelligent business woman, as well as a mother of two. If the Barnet Tories had an ounce of common sense, they would have listened to her views on parking in 2011, when she first started campaigning. Instead they followed Coleman, who to the best of my knowledge has never run a business and has little experience of working in the private sector. As a result the Barnet Tories lost a potentially massive vote winning asset.

Louise is spot on with her analysis. The Tory Party needs successful women to engage with them, support them and work for them. To do this, they will have to cast out the trolls and treat women with respect. Whilst Coleman was eventually booted out (following his conviction), there has been no action or apology from the party for the his misogynistic behaviour. There have been no tweets from Barnet Tories disassociating themselves from Daniel Hope and his sexist and patronising comments. Much as I disagree with many aspects of Conservative philosophy, I cannot imagine that it is good for democracy for the largest political party in the country to be such a hostile environment for successful women. In Barnet, it is worth pointing out that perhaps the most highly respected Conservative Councillor is Kate Salinger. She is recognised as having integrity and being honest and trustworthy. She makes a good case for why the Conservatives should listen to Louise. I would suggest that if Louise wants to succeed in her mission, she would do well to have a behind closed doors meeting with some of her dinosaur colleagues in Barnet and let them know why they need to start living in the 21st Century.

** Updated ** Ex Councillor Dan Hope and the Conservative Party - A clarification and correction

I have been contacted by a senior Barnet Conservative Councillor, who has asked to remain anonymous, asking me to make a clarification regarding a blog I posted earlier this week. In the post entitled "

Barnet Tories are on a charm offensive

I implied that the blatherings of Ex Brunswick Park Tory Councillor Daniel Hope and his blog "The Barnet Bugle" are part of the official Barnet Conservative Party PR machine. The Councillor, who knows Mr Hope very well, points out that the Barnet Bugle is not an official Conservative publication. He furthermore points out that many of the blogs contained are rather dismissive of various senior members of the Barnet Conservative family. He suggests that it should be clear to anyone that such a person would not be commissioned by the party to represent their views. He draws my attention specifically to the month of October 2011 (http://www.barnetbugle.com/journal/month/october-2011). The three blogs that month criticised Finchley MP Mike Freer for not being anti European enough, implying Freer was sucking up to the Prime Minister. The next blog, rather strangely given the attack on Freer, attacks Hendon MP Matthew Offord for not supporting the Prime Minister and being ungrateful for David Camerons support at the election. The third blog that month attacked the then GLA representative for Barnet, Brian Coleman. Mr Hope predicted that if Coleman put his foot in it again, he would be deselected as candidate for the 2012 election. This was clearly wishful thinking, as was his predictions that the only thing which would save Coleman was the fact Labour are useless. In fact Labour won by ove 20,000 votes.

The email also reminded me that Daniel Hope was deselected as a candidate for the Tories in Brunswick Park ward before the 2006 council election. It was suggested that Mr Hope found it impossible to work as a team (the Barnet Eye is still unclear as to the circumstances surrounding this). Following his deselection Mr Hope has left many unpleasant messages on the various sites concerning Councillor Andreas Tambourides, who he blames for his deselection. As Mr Tambourides is well respected in Barnet Conservative circles and is a senior officer in the party, it has been suggested that he is most unlikely to want to work with Mr Hope.

In light of this email, The Barnet Eye wishes to apologise to the Barnet Conservative Party for implying that the blatherings of the Barnet Bugle are associated with them. We accept that he is a marginal figure in the organisation and his antics, views and comments do not represent them.

Please note it is the official policy of the Barnet Eye to correct inaccuracies if pointed out and apologise where necessary.

Dan Hope at the Barnet Bigle has responded on his blog to the above statement. It seems Mr Hope has rather missed the point, but hey ho. Anyway if you are interested in what he has to say, please click here.

http://www.barnetbugle.com/journal/2013/8/20/fisking-the-latest-troll-attack-from-the-accurate-barnet-eye.html

The Barnet Eye rather suspects that the motivation for such a statement is purely to generate a few hits on his little read blog. He clearly realises that The Barnet Eye links to any such article and with our large readership, he gets a big boost.

Anyway, whilst we could go through Mr Hope's rather strange comments line by line, we feel that it is unneccessary. We do however have a few observations.

The first is that we find it odd that Mr Hope needs to complain that we have issued a correction. He spends much time blathering about the inaccuracy that he have taken the trouble to correct (the fact that his blog is not an official Tory publication). Mr Hope claims that he was never deselected as a Tory Council candidate in Brunswick Park. I would be most interested to hear whether Mr Hope believes he took the decision to move from the Safe Brunswick Park seat to the one in which he stood, which was unwinnable?

Mr Hope clearly cannot see the irony of his following statement, in regards to our statement that Mr Hope has problems with teamwork "Well Mr Tichbourne if you are so unsure as to what you are talking about, why publish it then? Mr Hope does recall big problems with Ms Hillan and Mr Tambourides with teamwork. Whilst he was Chief Whip of a group with no majority both of his ward colleagues were plotting to remove the elected Leader of the Conservative Group was successfully campaigning for a Conservative victory. He suggests you take your comments back to your 'anonymous' source for clarification." At Mr Hope's suggestion, I went back to the source with this comment. His response was that it was odd how Lynne Hillan & Andreas Tambourides could work well enough with each other. He also points out that as chief whip, Mr Hope oversaw an extremely unhappy period for the Barnet Conservatives, which ended with a leadership challenge and many rebellious councillors. My source wryly comments that party discipline has been better since 2006, despite huge challenges. Mr Hope also misses the irony in our statement that Mr Tambourides is well respected in Barnet Conservative circles. Whilst to Mr Hope this may seem lavish praise, most readers will realise that this is perhaps not a massive compliment in this publication.

Mr Hope also claims that Mr Tambourides has no infliuence and is not an officer in the Barnet Conservative party in his blog, but yesterday on twitter stated

Finally Mr Hope claims that the Barnet Eye has acted like a troll towards Mr Tambourides. He lists several blogs where Mr Tambourides is mentioned. Rather ironically, Mr Hope fails to mention his own comments on several of these blogs, which are less than complimentary about Mr Tambourides. Mr Hope claims that the Barnet Eye "ruthlessly trolls" against Mr Tambourides. Strangely enough, the evidence Mr Hope gives for ruthless campaign includes no blogs this year, only two last year. Not what I would call the most ruthless campaign. Interestingly Mr Hope has not even managed to put the correct links up on his blogs to the relevant articles.

I will leave the final word about Mr Hope to Councillor Tambourides. Whilst I have only ever spoken to him twice, he has never made a single complaint about anything the Barnet Eye. In fact the last time we spoke, he simply said "I'd advise you to be careful with Daniel Hope, he causes trouble".

With delicious irony, Mr Hope has added some rather amusing comments to his blog. This one is especially amusing

UPDATE 21 August: Mr Tichborne has updated his article. Despite being unable to answer the series of errors and nonsense in his orginal article and arguing he has an 'accuracy' policy he has not corrected a single word. In fact the update that he has continues to peddle anonymous gossip.

What makes this so deliciously ironic is that the Mr Hope has put up another post on his blog today, doubtless to capitalise on all the extra hits he's getting. What does it say

One Barnet Alliance member speaking on a confidential basis to the Bugle said
"How can Barbara be so arrogant? Who is she to say if anyone took offense from comments that another spokesmen said should never have been made? And to say that even though they have never debated, discussed or voted on immigration she was sure 'nobody in BAPS would disagree with (her)' makes her sound ten times more arrogant than even they claim Barnet Council has been in not consulting before making decisions."
(See http://www.barnetbugle.com/journal/2013/8/21/barnet-alliance-states-we-dont-think-that-any-view-that-was.html for full details)

As ever Mr Hope thinks confidential comments are fine when they agree with him, but "anonymous gossip" when they don't. Consistency has never been Mr Hopes strong point. Ho Hum .....

Barnet Tories are on a charm offensive

If you want to see a rather amusing and clumsy attempt at the art of spin gone wrong, Barnet Tory style, checkout how befuddled Tory, Ex Brunswick Park Councillor Daniel Hope chose to represent my words on his blog.

Here's what I said

http://barneteye.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/time-for-barnet-bugle-aka-dan-hope-to.html

and here's how Dan edited out the bits he didn't like to make a whole new story (Heh Heh)

http://www.barnetbugle.com/journal/2013/8/19/barnet-blogger-breaks-ranks-and-attacks-disgusting-barnet-al.html

Now whilst some of the readers of the Barnet Eye were a bit upset and emailed me to tell me that Dan had been a naughty boy, I think it is quite hilarious. Given all of the stories in Barnet that Dan could write about, it says everything about the drift in the Barnet Tories that this is the first story on Dan's rabidly rightwing blog since 23rd July. Is this really the only thing that he's noticed in the Borough since then? Wake up Dan !!!!

It is a little sad that Dan hasn't quite got the guts to put a link to the source article. It is the policy of the Barnet Eye to always include links to source material, so the reader can make up there own mind. It is called being honest.

Time for the Barnet Bugle AKA Dan Hope to apologise for anti semitism accusation

Calm down dear, we all make mistakes. We can all get it wrong in the heat of the moment. We can all misread things. Lord knows, I am a dyslexic I do it all the time. This week there has been an almighty spat between Daniel Hope AKA The Barnet Bugle and Mr Ron Cohen who tweets under the name of the Barnet Alliance. Now I have no idea whether these two chaps actually knew who the other was as they exchanged increasingly angry tweets. What I do know is that Mr Hope failed to recognise that Mr Cohen had used quotation marks in a tweet. As a result Mr Hope assumed that Mr Cohen had made a terrible slur on his Jewish ancestry. I have to admit that being a dyslexic, I immediately formed exactly the same conclusion as Mr Hope had. I was rather disgusted and was considering writing a stern rebuke for the Barnet Alliance. I do not tolerate racism or anti semitism in any form. I was highly disturbed to see such an tweet from an organisation that I have much respect for. Mr Hope tweeted a very strong riposte. Mr Cohen then replied pointing out that Mr Hope had deliberately ignored the quotation marks and deliberately misinterpreted the contents of the tweet.

Now on reading the tweet again, I then realised that like Mr Hope, I had misread the tweet and formed the completely wrong conclusion. So I thought I'd leave them to it. I then found that Mr Hope had submitted a formal complaint to the Barnet Alliance for Public Services against Mr Cohen, accusing him of anti semitism.

As a result a whole plethora of emails have circulated this week. As I read them, I have found the whole thing rather ridiculous. I am pretty sure that Mr Hope made exactly the same mistake I made when I saw the original tweet. I think he was outraged that some anonymous person had attacked him. In the context of this his response was 100% correct. Mr Cohen then responded and pointed out that Mr Hope had misread the tweet. Mr Cohen, rather uncharitably in my opinion, suggested Mr Hope had done this deliberately. I would give Mr Hope the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he is dyslexic, maybe he just misread it.

At this point, Mr Hope should have accepted his mistake and maybe suggested that Mr Cohen be a bit more circumspect with his tweeting. I would 100% agree had Mr Hope suggested that Mr Cohens statement could be misinterpreted and even worse, could prove inflammatory if it was misinterpreted.

Sadly Mr Hope chose to dig his heels in. Rather than making an apology for misrepresenting Mr Cohen and a  sensible point about the need to take care with what we tweet, he chose to issue a formal complaint to the Barnet Alliance and in the process, made himself look a tad silly.

Lets recap the situation. Mr Cohen posted a tweet that was open to misinterpretation. Mr Hope misinterpreted it, thinking it to be an anti semitic slur. Mr Cohen clarified the situation. As Mr Hope knows Mr Cohen is both Israeli and Jewish, Mr Hope must surely realise that the tweet was not anti semitic.

So gentlemen, please do the sensible thing. Mr Hope should apologise to Mr Cohen for calling him an anti semite and Mr Cohen should accept that his tweet could be misinterpreted and Mr Hope had not tweeted maliciously. Then we can all move on. I am sure both Mr Cohen and Mr Hope are staunch opponents of anti semitism, so they really should put this to bed.

There is one little postscript, I feel obliged to mention. Councillor Robert Rams piped in with this

Now I am shocked that Councillor Rams should get involved. For those of you who are familiar with the genesis of this blog, before I wrote this blog, I used to blog for the Hendon Times. I posted a blog on their site, urging Barnet Council to take down a Youtube video on their website, filmed at public expense, which contained a blatent anti semitic slur. Did Robert Rams support me in trying to get this horribly offensive video removed? Well actually nope he didn't. In fact various Barnet Tory councillors complained to the Hendon Times that I had "gone over the top" with my accusation that Barnet Council were putting Nazi propoganda on the internet. Robert Rams, at the time, was the press officer for Brian Coleman at the GLA. Phil Crowther, then editor of the Hendon Times had commented many times that Rams was "always on the phone to him complaining about your blog". Now I don't know what was said, but I do know two facts. One is that the Hendon Times sacked me as a blogger and the second is that Robert Rams told another Barnet Councillor that he'd ended my blogging career.  For posterity, I posted a blog about what happened as the second blog on this site - http://barneteye.blogspot.co.uk/2008/10/barnet-councils-incompetance-puts-nazi.html - Councillor Rams has never clarified his role in this affair or expressed his views about my campaign to remove the offensive video.

I reread the blog entry I reference above. I said one thing back in 2008. It was some advice that I think still holds true, especially in the light of the debacle described above.
"If you specifically mention religion or race and there are any negative overtones, you will offend people. This is not political correctness, it is common sense and good manners."
For the record, I think both Mr Hope and Mr Cohen are assets for Barnet. Mr Hope has performed a useful public service videoing council meetings. I disagree with much of what he says, but he is a hard working campaigner for his particular strand of politics and his commitment to open government is commendable. Mr Cohen is also an extremely hard working campaigner and a very decent and compassionate man. His work for the Barnet Alliance is vital. So come on chaps. Bury the hatchet and not in each others heads !

Brian Coleman and Mike Freer MP - The deadly duo

Ever wondered how Barnet Council became a pariah and a laughing stock. With Brian Coleman being hauled before his "Leader" - Councillor Richard Cornelius today, what better time to tell the sad story of where it all went wrong and why.

In the Barnet Conservative Party, there really are only two people that matter, one is never out of the news - Councillor Brian Coleman. The other however, is the real power behind the throne. That man is Finchley MP Mike Freer. Back in 2006, these two cooked up a plan. At the time the leader of Barnet Council was the highly respected and very capable Brian Salinger. Salinger was an efficient leader with years of public service experience. He ran a tight ship and was getting to grips with many of the issues facing the council.

Freer and Coleman despised Salinger. They felt he was not hard right enough and was too old school Tory in his approach. They felt he wasn't a Thatcherite and was too interested in running the council efficiently to be interested in hard right dogma. Salinger had a good relationship with everyone at Barnet, including trades unions and believed in a harmonious atmosphere at the Council. Freer and Coleman derided this "beer and sandwiches" approach. Freer and Coleman had an opportunity. A Council election was coming. Coleman was on good terms with many people in the local party at the time. He engineered the deselection of candidates who were in the Salinger camp (including Barnet Bugle blogger Dan Hope, in Brunswick Park). As Salinger had done a good job running the council, he achieved an increased majority at the 2006 Council elections. Sadly for him, his backstabbing cabinet colleagues had a plan. A day after the victory, Coleman proposed a vote of no confidence in Salinger. With his new found friends installed, Salinger was dumped (in a move reminiscent of the hard left Militant Tendency takeover of Liverpool Council in the 1980's).

Coleman then proposed a new Leader, his hard right mate, Mr Mike Freer. Freer was duly installed. Freer was determined to change things. Out went consensus and in came One Barnet. His political ideology believed that public was bad and private was good in all cases. He enrolled on a BT sponsored program called "Vital Vision". This promotes outsourcing in local authorities. Delegates get courses paid for by BT. Mike Freer got an honoury MBA after a week long course from Harvard. BT also lent Barnet Council one of their executives, Max Wide, to soften Barnet up for privatisation. In return for Brian Colemans help in becoming leader, Mike Freer made him Mayor in 2009. Immediately things started to go wrong. Coleman was found guilty by the Standards committee of breaching its code of conduct in September 2009. He is the only standing Mayor of Barnet to suffer this indignity. As for the outsourcing. It was initially labelled "Future Shape". Freer attracted derision by comparing it to Easyjet and calling it Easycouncil. As people associate Easyjet with all manner of things which annoy them, this was a disaster.

The PR fallout was so bad that the whole project was renamed One Barnet. Hoardes of consultants on megabucks were brought in to sort it out. The project was meant to be up and running by the end of 2010, but whilst the consultants have siphoned millions of pounds of taxpayers money, no savings have been delivered. Freer's real goal was to become and MP. Realising that Barnet Council may go badly wrong, he stepped down as leader in December 2009 to concentrate on becoming an MP in Finchley. He has, however maintained an iron grip on the party machine. Brian Coleman has been his enforcer in the Council chamber.

As the One Barnet shambles has become ever more embarrassing, Freer has sought to disassociate himself from his baby. He has, however, given Coleman unswerving support, to ensure control of the Barnet Conservative party machine. In 2012, when Coleman lost the GLA election, Freer realised that Coleman was no longer an asset for the party. His parking charges had blown up and lost the GLA, also knocking out a safe seat in Brunswick Park (ironically a seat held in the ward where Dan Hope was deselected). Freer knew Coleman needed to be "parked" but he couldn't afford to alienate him completely. In a compromise, Coleman lost his cabinet role, but was given the powerful Budget OSC committee chair. A post that attracts a rather healthy allowance.

In April of 2012, the first One Barnet outsourcing went live. Parking control was taken from the inhouse team and given to NSL. Barnet Council  used a new One Barnet Contract, the sort which will be used for all future outsourcings, to implement this scheme. The scheme allowed NSL and Barnet to "share profits" from parking in the Borough. The council now gets 50% of the profits, where previously they got 100%. Traffic wardens are given stringent targets for ticketing and this generates cash. That is the theory. The truth is that it has all gone wrong and the council has a million pounds less in its coffers than forecast. We also lost dozens of jobs, which moved to Croyden.

At the same time as NSL took on the parking contract, they closed Friern Barnet library. This was supposed to bring in a one off receipt of £430,000. This is less than half of the sum lost so far by the outsourced parking contract (which was Brian Colemans baby and the first fruit of Freers future shape/One Barnet project). The total bill for One Barnet Consultants to draw up this mess is around £10 million (for paper reports). That would buy more than 20 Friern Barnet libraries.

What is even more alarming is the fact that Barnet plan to outsource the rest of the council services to multi national companies like Capita and BT this year. These will be on 10 year contracts with guarantees for revenue for the suppliers. They will cost us all a minimum of £1 billion. These guarantees are made with your money. If it all goes well, we pay for it and if it all goes wrong, we'll pay even more. The bidders for one contract (known as DRS) have designated it as "too risky" for them to take on and have asked for a joint venture to be set up between the council and the supplier. This means that the council will take a stake in the company, get a small percentage of the profits (if there are any) and take all the risk. As I understand it, the supplier will simply make a costs + charge for running the service and then cream off most of the profits.

At a recent meeting the Leader of the Council, Richard Cornelius denied that the joint venture would be set up. This is despite Pam Wharfe, a council officer, emailing staff twice to say this was the preferred option. Was Ms Wharfe disciplined for this? Of course not.We have a situation where no one knows who runs the council. We have Councillors defying the standards committee, refusing to apolgise for bad behaviour. We have consultants bills mounting, whilst projects go wrong. We have outsourced contracts failing, with no escape for the taxpayer. And we have the architect of it all, Mike Freer MP sitting in Westminster saying "Nothing to do with me mate", whilst his mate and mentor Brian Coleman creates mayhem wherever he goes.

Will Brian Coleman be disciplined today by Richard Cornelius? We can only wait and see. If he isn't we know why.
