Lynne Hillan RIP

This week saw the passing of Councillor Lynne Hillan, former leader of Barnet Council. Hillan took over from Mike Freer in 2009 to become the first female leader of Barnet Council. She lead the Conservative group on Barnet Council to victory at the Council elections in 2010 increasing the number of Conservative Councillors, taking back Mill Hill ward  from the Lib Dems in the process. She stepped down as leader in 2011 due to a battle with cancer, which she lost this week.

Whilst we had our differences over issues of policies and politics, she was robbed of her life at a tragically young age. We have only admiration for her courage in the face of the disease and her fighting spirit. The Barnet Eye passes on our condolences to the family of Councillor Hillan and hopes that she is in a better place, free of the pain, anxiety and discomfort which this terrible disease brings. As a fellow sufferer from the disease, we hope that the time is coming soon, where science will get the better of cancer and the tragic carnage which it causes will become a thing of the past.

Friern Barnet Community Library - Update

Just occasionally, an idea grows wings and flies. Yesterday, in impotent frustration at the way Barnet Council summarily closed Friern Barnet Library I posted a blog  suggesting that  we open a community library next Saturday. I have been inundated with support for this idea. It is truly unbelieveable, the level of interest this idea has generated.

It seems that every few minutes, I get another email offering help or coming up with a way to make the day better. Thank you.

The Barnet Eye to open a Peoples Library at Friern Barnet next Saturday 14th April

The Barnet Eye today announces plans to open a "Peoples Library" outside the closed Friern Barnet Library between 11am and 1pm next Saturday 14th April. As Councillor Richard Cornelius and Councillor Robert Rams clearly have no intention of listening to the people of Barnet, it is up to us to show them that we are not prepared to sit idly by and let Barnet Council strip us of our services, purley to fund the £1 million a year they spend on allowances and other services for Councillors who do nothing for the community.

The concept is simple. Local residents are invited down to bring any books they have read and no longer require. The Barnet Eye will bring our collection, which were donated when we ran the original "Save Barnets Libraries" Campaign in September 2010. The local community is invided down to bring books and borrow books.

We will also be interviewing local residents for our new film "Robert Rams -  The Twat who stole our library".

If you are not doing anything next Saturday between 11am and 1pm Please come along, bring a book and borrow a book. Lets not miss this opportunity to show them that our library will not die.

We will also be running a competition to design a professionally made Blue Plaque which we will be erecting on the side of the library in a public civic ceremony. Please bring your designs down. All age groups welcome and everyone under the age of 93 who submits a design will get a free lollypop !

Brian Coleman induced parking mayhem spreads across Barnet

Earlier in the week, we learned that Councillor Brian Colemans decision to abolish free parking bays last year had caused mayem on Bittacy Hill. Buses were held up, the Police had got involved, local residents were inconvenienced and traffic flow was impaired. As parking restrictions are designed to "improve traffic flow", it is clear that Coleman has produced a policy which doesn't work. Not only that, it may be illegal, as it is clearly a revenue raising move (yet another Colemanite Stealth tax).

It appears that Bittacy Hill is not the only place in Barnet to be under the "Coleman Cosh". The Barnet Eye today learned that Bunns Lane in Mill Hill is also suffering. As with the Bittacy Hill cock up, Barnet Council have tried to bury the bad news, by releasing the information as an officer released DPR. Clearly Brian Coleman wants no association with the failure of his policy to be associated with him, in the run up to the GLA elections.

Here is a link to the report
http://committeepapers.barnet.gov.uk/democracy/reports/reportdetail.asp?ReportID=11121

And here is what its says Colemans policies have done to traffic in Bunns Lane Mill Hill.

8. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

8.1

Bunns Lane/Grahame Park Way NW7

In June 2011 the Council completed a scheme whereby all ‘Free’ parking bays
were converted to permit holder or paid for parking bays in the borough’s Controlled
Parking Zones (CPZs). Subsequent to the changes being made to the Mill Hill CPZ,
Councillor Rayner and TFL have reported that an increased level of parking is
occurring on both sides of Bunns Lane between the junction of Woodcroft Avenue
and the mini roundabout at the junction with Grahame Park Way which is just
outside of the CPZ boundary.

8.2 Bunns Lane has seen an increase in parking activity since the removal of the free
bays in the adjoining CPZ by motorists, suspected to be commuters using the local
transport links parking their vehicles throughout the day. Motorists are parking as
close as possible to the current restrictions which is causing obstruction for larger
vehicles including buses and commercial vehicles resulting in an increase in
congestion along this section of Bunns Lane. A site visit by Officers and Councillor
Rayner confirmed that obstructive parking is detrimental to traffic flow.

8.3 As a result of these observations, it is intended to propose and implement ‘At Any
Time’ waiting restrictions in lengths of Bunns Lane and Grahame Park Way, in
order to improve traffic flow along these stretches of road:

8.4 In addition, it is also proposed to extend the existing Monday to Saturday 8am to
6.30pm waiting restrictions in Bunns Lane for a short length. The proposal is
shown on the drawing 21729/744 appended to this report.

8.5 Councillor Rayner has since reaffirmed his views and support for the proposals. In
particular, Councillor Rayner advised of his concerns regarding safety being an
issue at this location.

8.6 All Hale Ward and Mill Hill Ward Members have been consulted on the proposals
Councillor Sury Khatri has confirmed his support for the measures.

As one may have come to expect from our useless and cowardly Mill Hill and Hale Ward Tory Councillors, there has been no attempt to stand up for the hard pressed commuters of Mill Hill, who resnet being stung by extortionate car packing charges at Mill Hill Broadway Station car park. These were hiked to £5 a day last year. Who can blame ordinary working people for wishing to try and avoid such daylight robbery. There is no mention from them that prior to Brian Colemans cash grabbing abolition of Free bays, this wasn't a problem. There is no mention of the fact that there is widespread opposition to the CPZ parking hikes.

Section 8.6 gives  the game away. Of six councillors informed of the changes affecting their ward, only one Sury Khatri appears to have bothered to respond. What does this tell us about the Conservative Councillors who now represent Mill Hill and Hale Ward. It strikes me as likely that the council planned to roll out these sort of sneaky parking restrictions across the Borough, under the radar as officer approved DPR's. I urge the opposition Labour and Lib Dem councillors to call all of these in for review to expose Colemans policies for the abject failure and cash grab, which everyone knows they are.

I stood for election in May 2010 for Mill Hill Ward. I lost out to the Conservatives. They get [paid thousands of pounds a year to represent the people of Mill Hill. This DPR lays bare just how useless and lazy they are. How hard is it to read your paperwork and let the Council know when the people you represent are being fleeced. Brian Coleman has materially damaged the infrastructure of Mill Hill, with his cash grabbing policies and our councillors are to scared of him to say a dickie bird about it. Shame on all of them. As to the Hale Councillors, they are even more useless. Tome Davey is on the Cabinet and has waved all of these Tax the motorist policies through, stopping only to abuse people on benefits at every opportunity. Councillor Hugh Rayner is the chairman of the Local Conservative Party and so is clearly hand in glove with Coleman and his grab your cash policies. As to the other Hale Councillor, he's so useless, I can't even remember his name. Maybe he's the invisible man. Maybe he's a figment of Councillor Robert Rams imagination. If he's ever lifted a finger to stop the good people of Hale Ward being ripped off by Brian Coleman please feel free to add a comment, because he must have done it in secret.

The Barnet Eye will continue to fight to save the hard pressed families and commuters of Mill Hill from the cash grabbing excesses of Brian Coleman and his policies of Stealth taxation. It seems that in Mill Hill, you only see Tory Councillors when they want your vote. You will find the Barnet Eye here 365 days a year fighting for you. Enjoy your Easter

A Good Friday reflection ... For Athiests

Of all of the days in all of the religious calendars, perhaps today is the one which anyone of any faith could learn something from. It is a day which should make each and every one of us stop and pause for thought. Whether you believe Jesus of Nazereth was a man, God or fictional character, there is a universal message. Consider what the story of Good Friday tells us. A man, who professed non violence was put to death by a mixture of religious and political authorities, who perceived him as a threat. Forget every other aspect of the story. Just consider what heppened. A man arrives at a large city, under occupation by a brutal foreign power, ruled by a collaborative religious elite. He undermines that elite, contradicts their teachings and policies. The elite infiltrates his group, arrests him, tries him on scant evidence and then the occupying power publicly executes him, nailing a warning to other wannabe leaders on his cross.

Sadly, Jesus of Nazereth is not the only person in the history of humanity to have met a nasty end for challenging such vested interests.  A quick trip to the Amnesty international website - http://amnesty.org.uk/?gclid=CMfiqY-voK8CFQQMtAodVQ9pcA tells us that the world is full of such stories even today. In a perfect world, Amnesty international wouldn't exist. Sadly we are a long way from that world.

If the athiests are correct about whether Jesus is a diety or not or whether he existed or not, no one would argue that the Roman Empire was a bloodthirsty and barbaric regime. Hopefully everyone who reads this blog would agree that no one should be persecuted for religious views or preaching a message of non violent resistance to authority. For all members of the human family, surely the message from this day should be to put such repression to bed forever. How can we do this? We can support the work of organisations such as Amnesty. We can contribute, we can write letters of support. We can shun products manufactured in countries where the regimes operate repressive policies.

I've never really understood the name Good Friday. I've long been of the opinion that the world should use the day as one to call for the end of all repression, state execution and torture. Whether you want to do that in memory of  a man called Jesus, who may or may not have been a diety is up to you. The thing is that we need to have a global day, every year to highlight such repression and to call for its end. I don't care if that day is Good Friday, Easter Sunday or a day randomly picked on the calendar. What I want is for children in forthcoming generations to ask their mums and dads after Good Friday Mass "Do people still get killed for disagreeing with their rulers?" to receive the answer "No, we live in a civilised world today".  Then every Friday would be a Good Friday.

If you want to see an end to repression, start today by joining Amnesty International

Why I'm Proud of Barnet in Pictures - Part 2 - Friern Barnet Library protest

Yesterday, the people of Barnet gathered to stage a symbolic sit in at Friern Library, to protest at the atrocious way Council Leader Richard Cornelius, Council Library supremo Robert Rams and Barnet GLA representative and Council cabinet guru Brian Coleman have ignored the views of their community and treated the people of Barnet with contempt, in summarily closing their library. The council responded by turning off the power and banning them from using the toilets in the library. Sadly, the Barnet Eye had not realised that Thursday would be such an important day in the history of Barnet. We'd scheduled business meetings all day. The last of these was to buy new curtains for our studios in North Finchley, so we took a brief trip down to the library to show our solidarity at 5.30pm. Here is our picture chronicle. I am proud of the response of our local people to such awful and high handed treatment.

Why I'm proud of Barnet in pictures - Part 1 - Parking petiton

Yesterday Helen Michael, leader of the North Finchley traders campaign agaimnst Barnet Councils parking stealth tax, handed a petitition in to Councillor Richard Cornelius. There were 13,500 signatures on the petition. Have you ever wondered what 13,500 signatures look like? I took some pictures at the screening of A Tale of Two Barnets at Cafe Buzz on Wednesday night. I am proud of the traders and the people of Barnet for their efforts in collecting so many signatures.

Barnet Council create a PR Disaster in 18 hours flat

Barnet Council are probably unique. What other council could create a PR disaster, with national news coverage in 18 hours, from nothing? Thursday evening, at 7pm a bunch of local residents turned up to try and persuade the cabinet of Barnet Council that closing Friern Barnet library, before a promised replacement had been opened, was a bad idea. Now Barnet residents are generally a fairly mild mannered and well behaved bunch. They are pretty tolerant and understanding and usually prepared to give the benefit of the doubt to people.

Last night, they found they'd been stitched up like a kipper. The Barnet Council scrutiny committee had recommended that the Cabinet took another look at the decision to close Friern Library. This committee had a majority membership of Conservatives. Their job is to stop the cabinet making bad decisions and overlooking things. It is a safeguard. Sadly, the cabinet and the Leader, Councillor Richard Cornelius, seem prepared to listen to no one. Residents were shocked to find that the cabinet had decided to close the library today at 4pm.

People were outraged. Within minutes of the decision being taken, emails were flying and a symbolic occupation was being organised. The whole community, left and right, old and young, united against this terrible decision. The BBC turned up - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-17631127  - as did the local press - http://www.times-series.co.uk/news/topstories/9635482.Emotions_running_high_as_Friern_Barnet_Library_is_closed/?ref=mmsp and http://www.edgware-today.co.uk/news.cfm?id=12591&headline=Sit-in%20at%20closed%20Friern%20Barnet%20Library - yet again the name of Barnet Council was dragged through the mud.

Councillor Robert Rams told another whopping great porkie to the press in relation to the closure. There is no evidence at all that there is any costed plan to move the service to the arts depot. How can you claim you need the funds, when you don't have a business case. Another aspect of the porkie anyone could easily spot, is the fact that you could market the library whilst keeping it open. There is no reason why prospective buyers need to see a closed building. In fact, the longer it is closed, the less it will be worth. Empty buildings deteriorate. One could be cynical and wonder if Rams has lined someone up to buy it? Needless to say someone is likely to make a killing on the deal and it isn't likely to be the Barnet Council Taxpayer. Here is what he said -
"We need to market it as soon as possible so we can get the funds to open it at the artsdepot. Financially we can’t keep it open as we will be jeopardising the other improvements we want to make."
The same Councillor Robert Rams voted himself a pay rise withing weeks of winning the 2010 council election. The same Robert Rams regularly blogs about how proud he is of the One Barnet program, which has cost millions of pounds in consultant fees, but has never produced a single penny of savings. The same Robert Rams is a member of the cabinet of Barnet Council which agreed a renumeration package worth £250,000 per annum for the CEO Nick Walkley. This is the man who says that Barnet Council couldn't afford a few quid to keep the Library open until the end of the easter holidays. Children in Friern are being deprived of their library, at a busy time in the run up to GCSE and A Level exams. They have had no time to find other places for quiet study. Resindents have not even been given the opportunity to bring books back. No doubt they will be fined for late returns.

As well as being a bad time for the people of Barnet, especially young people who need study space, it is politically a bad time. Children were off school, so they could attend the demonstration. Parents were off work to look after children, so they could attend the demonstration. Many firms had closed early for the Easter holiday, so they could attend the demonstration. Maunday Thursday is typically a quiet news day, so the BBC were more than happy to come out. In the good old days of Tony Blair, bad news stories were rushed out when there was big world events. One aide got in trouble for admitting it publicly. In Barnet, the inept regime of Richard Cornelius and Robert Rams looks for the worst day possible to rush bad news out on.

Well done chaps, if you wanted to shoot yourselves in the foot, you couldn't have timed it better.

A blue plaque for Richard Cornelius on the side of Friern Barnet Library

I have commissioned a blue plaque to commemorate the closure of Friern Barnet by the Leader of Barnet Council on the 5th April 2012. I will be arranging a ceremony to erect the Plaque on the side of the Library and will be inviting all of Barnet's Councillors down to attend the ceremony. Here is the design.
We will of course be filming the ceremony and inviting Councillor Richard Cornelius who is the leader of the council and the person proud to lead a library shutting administration to say a few words. We will also invite Councillor Robert Rams to speak and explain to us his civic pride in the way he has engaged with the community to ensure that their views were completley ignored. As the Library has shut, rather poignantly on Maunday Thursday, in the season of Easter, we will be presenting both Councillor Rams and Councillor Cornelius with a symbolic gift of 30 pieces of silver to mark their loyalty to the community they serve. Maybe the next council meeting should open with prayers to St Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus most well known Apostles, a man who like Rams and Cornelius preferred to take the cash than show loyalty to the community to which he belonged.

You may say "There is no way that Barnet Council will allow such a plaque to be erected on the side of the Library building". If that is the case, it means that Councillor Richard Cornelius is not proud of his policy of Library closure and doesn't want anyone to know that as Leader, he is ultimately responsible. Well Richard, I am sorry. The days of hiding are gone. If you make a decision which affects the community, you should be able to be proud of it and not be afraid of people knowing about it.

I can see no possible objection to the Blue Plaque. It will be tasteful, it will be in keeping with the street scene and it will commemorate the passing of a well loved institution. What worse criminal damage can there be to a library than to shut it.

Whatever happens. I will announce the date of the Plaque laying ceremony and I will turn up with my blue plaque, the cameras and whoever happens to care. Let us see if our local Councillors have the guts to account to their community and turn up.
