Fantastic. Hopefully parents and teachers and lecturers will join you and the local press will cover what the Young People of Barnet are doing. It is fantastic to see people willing to stand up against unfairness.

I'm sure it's by accident that you've omitted that this is organised by Labour Party / TUC activist... Your notice makes it out to be a demonstration for 'students' when it seems very party political...

Is it going to be organised with the same level of cack handedness as the NUS 'walk past' CCHQ? Are bricks and fire extinguishers going to be handed out?

Oh, and I just wondered, whether they will be carrying on marching from 212 Ballards Lane to LibDems HQ (if there is one) to make their point known?

Dan,

The kid organising this is at school. I don't see anything wrong with people who agree with him helping him. I think you are way off the track here. This awful policy is hitting many children of Tory voters and many future Tory voters.

If there was a Lib Dem office in Finchley, there's no earthly reason that students shouldn't demonstrate.

I'm a bit saddened that you seem to be taking a Daily Mail kneejerk reaction to a genuine protest by intelligent young people.

Dear Daniel, this march has come from the school students themselves.

Their idea, their organisation.

People have to realise that you can't just load £30,000 of debt onto young people's shoulders and expect them to meekly shrug and say "oh, OK then", still less thank you for it.

I hope they do go to Lib Dem HQ as well, but it's not up to us.

I honestly didn't think ANYTHING much was
"the work of the Labour Party in Barnet"
since it seems to be a very ineffective opposition.

I think Daniel has to be practical - there is no "Government" office in Finchley.
"Once more to the barracades of the Post Office! Although, strictly speaking, Royal Mail Holdings is merely a public limited company in which the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills owns 50,004 ordinary shares plus 1 special share, and the Treasury Solicitor holds 1 ordinary share, Comrades!"

FYI - I deleted a comment from Dan Hope. Not because I had a problem with it, but because Alex is a real person at a Barnet School and I felt Dan's email could cause him hassle.

Please be mindful of these issues when posting comments

Roger, you have just published this 'child' (as you put it to me) full name, email address and mobile phone number on your blog - encouraging people to contact him - and then have the chutzpah to suggest anything I said on a comment could cause him hassle! Really? Have you thought that through...

I had no idea how old this chap is but if your worry is protecting his identity maybe you should take down your post or redact his full name, email address and mobile phone...

It is also risable that you feel that a Labour activist, over 16 that is publicly leading a protest to Conservative Party HQ in Finchley is outside of public comment?

I repeat I think that you censor your original post if you want to protect him. The more I think about it the more inappropriate publicising, what now turns out to be a school kid demo (not student) on this adult political site seems to have been....

Dan,

You may feel that only people over 18 are entitled to have a view. Alex is going to be affected by this, you are not. If he's happy to put his details there, thats ok with me.

He states that it was a demo for sixth formers. I'd have thought all of this was clear.

Anyway, I've emailed you privately to explain my issues with what you said.

I'm sure that when Alex reads all of this, he'll realise what a career in Barnet politics could be like, so I'm sure you've performed a great service to him

Every sixth-form student will be 18entering their fresher year so what makes you think that these bright students of predominantly Tory Barnet should not be organising a demo. I find it sad that the dis-service to mankind is, that you were born. So, relative to your class and your age, Who paid for your 1st degree presuming you did get one. PRAY,DO TELL US.

When Alex has read all this, he is going to discover that you are the only Barnet Tory Councillor who was SACKED or DESELECTED by your own colleagues after 1 term why - I'll put in in the following manner, What a waste of money on your education no matter who paid for it. Who knows, Alex might become a Tory Prime Minister in LibDem clothing - Remember Churchill

Hello - Alex Clayman has finally read these comments (i'm alex clayman)

Daniel Hope - I am a real 6th former, real arms, legs, etc...
I decided to organise this protest because loads of people my age have got bored of the usual practice of apathy.

Clearly and unsurprisingly, the protest was a hit with everyone with a decent conscience. Thus, i asked for some help organising it because i'm aware that no man is an island.. stewards, leaflets etc have been provided by unions. I'm very grateful to them.

I'm happy to have my details already up - of course i don't know what was in the deleted comment.

I am a member of the Labour party, however it was not organised by the labour party - it was organised by me. If anyone doesn't believe that, i'm afraid i can't help them much

Interesting fact from Moaneybat!

So yes, hope to see as many people there as possible!

Thanks for the clarification Alex.

BTW, Alex Clayman is a different Alex to the one who posted a guest blog yesterday, who is a 1st year University student at QMC.

I'd rather hope that people would see it as a positive thing that young people are trying to have a say in their future.

I think this alex clayman is an inspiration to students eveywhere, standing up for everything that is right. I shall certainly be participating in this protest. Good on you! :)

Mazza totally agree.

The last time I looked people in the UK were free to join any political party they wanted ? so what if this lad is a member of Labour or whatever.

It is the issue that is important.

I voted Tory and I support this March 100%.

I have written to Nick Herbert MP as well expressing my anger at what is happening to students and asking that the Tory MPs who have had free education at degree level actually reverse this decision and cut fees.

We need to invest in the Youth or our country has no future. In a recession this is the best use of money.

We should HALF The salaries of MPS and scrap all allowances for Councillors - these people have enough money already. The young people have not yet even had a job and they are being saddled with debt.

This is massively unfair. If DAN HOPE can't agree with the principle of free universal education for all up to the age of 21 then I despair for our countries future.

We need education to become more competitive. Our skill base is not good enough and if you know your history the Crimean War led to Education Acts when the better educated Prussian Army kicked our asses !!

We have seen our education standing in the World go downhill under New Labour. It is vital we take serious and radical steps to repair that damage. The first step would be to restore funding to higher education and to scrap fees. That is what the majority of educated people in the UK want to see happen.

Good luck to Alex and his march. Hopefully thousands will march and it will be front page news in the local press and put our Young People's future at the top of the agenda.

There you go! The dude is a member of the Labour party and, showing a darn side more ability than yourself when in the Town Hall.

So why did you get the sack?

I've just seen this thread: BB I think you have said everything that needs saying. I agree that there should be a protest to local Libdems too, if you can find any. Having a son who is actually a sixth former I happen to know there is a widespread interest in this demo and I am really pleased to see - at last - an active interest in politics by this age group. The tuition fee rise is completely indefensible and yet again proves the point that both nationally and locally when the Conservative party is in power, the full cost of their economic policies is always dumped on the poorest members of society whilst the tax evaders, the irresponsible bankers, and those with inherited wealth and trust funds - and the Tory/Libdem leaders of the Coalition government - know full well that their children will never have to worry for one moment about the cost of their educaion. Really, Dan Hope, I do not understand where your political loyalties lie at all: you seem to be, for mysterious reasons, alienated from your fellow Tories here in Barnet, and hold fascinatingly retro views on Labour politics, but what do you actually believe in? Do tell.
