Barnet Council Supplier Scandal - £2 million per annum in supplier payments hidden from the public

The Barnet Eye has been investigating how Barnet Council spends your money recently. We have been trying to see if they are giving us value for money. We have hit a major stumbling block, because we were shocked to find that Barnet Council are actually hiding who they are paying from public view. In April, over £188,000 of public money was paid to companies and individuals for commercial services, where the identity of the has been withheld as it is "personal data". I have reviewed the figures and approx £16,500 of the figure is for "insurance claims". In this case it is quite reasonable that the Council should withhold the name of a private individual, who receives a payout for a failure by the council, but how can this be justified for organisations providing consultancy, training, professional services, etc

I have sent an email to all 63 Barnet Councillors, querying this behaviour and asking them whether they share my concerns. I believe that this is scandalous behaviour. I have asked for the Audit committee to start an urgent investigation into the practice. This is our money being spent and there is no justification for the council to hide it. Barnet is famed for its armchair auditors (ie myself and the other Barnet Bloggers).  Unlike the councillors, we receive no allowance for our work and seek nothing from the taxpayer. We don't get invited on junkets and we don't even get to see the secret papers. Despite all of these issues, in the past five years, since the Barnet Eye started blogging, our activities have resulted in savings of £2 million to the Barnet Taxpayer (money saved on Metpro & other dodgy non contracts).
