In 2008 Barnet Council spent tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayers money (ie your money) interviewing residents on video and placing the videos on Youtube. The idea was to prove that they were engaging with citizens and listening to them. This clip is one of those residents and the clip was uploaded on 22nd August 2008. It was filmed in Mill Hill Broadway.
So what have they done since then about this ladies concerns.
a) Teenagers with nothing to do? They have closed the local sports club in Grahame Park way. They have sacked most of the staff at the Rithmyk Project in Canada Villa and they are flogging off the Watling Boys club building.
b) Problems with parking. They've abolished pay and display and replaced it with pay by phone. They've hiked the costs of parking in CPZ's and hiked the costs in car parks.
Which proves what we said at the time. These videos were a complete waste of money. Your money and mine.

Space Invaders Vs Doom (part II)
When they first came out, no one had computers at home, we played them in arcades and pubs. I remember how in a few short years, pinball machines were displaced and the various electronic games took over. In Spain recently I had a go on one in arcade, first time for years.
So what has this got to do with Barnet & the price of fish? Well, as I blogged here earlier, Barnet Council is forcing Mill Hill Sports Club to close so that it can build a new school on the site. Football pitches, Hocley, Cricket & a whole host of other activities will cease on the site. This is the nearest such facility for hundreds of young people in Grahame Park and Burnt Oak. So what is there for kids to do on these estates? Hang round on Street Corners looking bored? Sit at home on the Games console? I was discussing the issue of adolescent obesity with friends last week. When I was growing up, this was rare and generally associated with other medical issues. Now it brings on other medical issues.
Once we tear up football pitches and close down sports clubs, they are gone forever. Healthy exercise ceases to be a practical option for young people, with nowhere to go and no one to mentor them. Why on earth can't our politicians wake up to the fact that closure of these facilities is a crime. When youngsters become obese and develop heart disease, diabetes and other weight related issues, this is a direct result of such policies. Young people need activities and exercise. They need clubs with people to bring out the best in them.
Sadly we have a generation of politicians in Barnet who just don't care. We have a council who spend a fortune on their own private army, to keep us plebs out of the way, but won't lift a finger to actually give bored young people something constructive to do

Barneteye Weekly Roundup - the Death of a blog ?
A great write up for the Shine London Night Time marathon in London's leading listings website - The Londonist - (http://londonist.com/2011/09/shine-night-marathon-makes-london-debut.php). The Shine event is in aid of Cancer Research UK. This blog is supporting this event in every way it can. My good lady is participating, as detailed yesterday, in memory of the many friends and family we've lost to cancer. As technology progresses, we really do have the chance to end the suffering caused by this awful disease, for future generations. We can only do this by sticking our hands in our pockets and donating money. To demonstrate my commitment to the cause, I stated yesterday that unless we achieve a minimum of £200 sponsorship for Clare, this blog will cease on 2nd October. This is a cast iron promise, that will be that for me & Barnet blogging. I'm pleased to report that after only 1 day, we have already nearly reached the three quarters mark towards our target. On to a few other issues. Bumped into the chair of the board of governors of Etz Chaim School (new Jewish Free School in Mill Hill), Adam Dawson yesterday. Had a chat with Adam, who said how great it was to see the kids in the new school. He said that the building works had produced a really great environment for the children. Whatever anyone may think of the school, it's important that we keep it all in perspective. Interestingly the papers covering the assignment of the lease appeared on the Barnet Council website yesterday - http://committeepapers.barnet.gov.uk/democracy/reports/reportdetail.asp?ReportID=10634 - it mentions the "minimal financial risk" associated with the transfer. I also see that there has been a variation in the lease, to allow part of the building to operate as a "community cafe". It will be interesting to find out more about this. I believe that the Action Group, who oppose Etz Chaim are still investigating a possible legal challenge regarding the site. It would be good to hear the current status of this. The Action Group website is not really that helpful - http://www.actiongroupmillhill.com/index.php/current-situation - just to note, the current site for the school is the SS Barrosa building, next door to the ex Wyevale Garden Centre. The school plan to move into the Garden Centre site at the start of next year.
On the subject of Schools, Barnet Council today announced plans to turn the site of Mill Hill Sports Club into a new school - http://www.times-series.co.uk/news/topstories/9256796.Council_reveals_plans_to_turn_Mill_Hill_sports_club_into_school/ - I can absolutely guarantee that Councillor Andrew Harper is telling whoppers when he says he's working with local groups to help them find "new homes". The treatment of the club staff, members and wider community has been disgraceful. If Harper has been "planning this for sometime" why didn't he work with those groups "some time" ago to help them find a new home. I guarantee he's upset many local people, lots of whom used to be Tories. Anyway Councillor Harper, I'm on the Mill Hill Music Festival organising committee and I look forward to the invite to discuss our new site.

Barnet FC accuse Barnet Council of failing football in Barnet

The Barnet Eye fully supports Barnet FC. We believe that Barnet Council has behaved in an atrocious manner towards the club. Association Football is the national game. Barnet FC are a successful club and it is atrocious that their role in the community is not valued and cherished. The Barnet Eye has no arguement with Saracens Rugby Football Club, but we believe it is unfair to seemingly favour a club with no ties to Barnet over our local team. The local Conservative party in Mill Hill have shown a complete disdain for football, opposing an application for a pavillion and clubhouse for Kentish Town FC (ave attendance 30) at Chase Lodge playfields, whilst backing a 10,000 seat Stadium proposal for Saracens Rugby Football Club.
Barnet Council are also trying to force football away from various locations, such as Mill Hill Sports Club and have sold off many playing fields for redevelopment. It is time for Barnet Council to start treating our local clubs with the same respect they treat the multi millionaire backers of some of the schemes forcing well loved local facilities out. Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous has broken his silence about the much publicised multi-million pound Saracens relocation plans for Copthall Stadium in a statement issued by the club today. He accuses Barnet Council of contravening the Local Government Act which states that the council MUST obtain best value for any site it disposes of in the borough.
The statement also accuses the council of using delaying tactics, failing to resolve assurances made to Barnet FC in recent years and making it impossible for Barnet FC to operate at Underhill. The council have told the club they do not have any land for it to develop a stadium ... even though they were secretly agreeing to go ahead with plans for Saracens to relocate.
"It is quite clear they want to push football out and move rugby in", says the hard-hitting statement. "Despite Barnet FC having more than 120 years of history as a community club in the area, they seem to want to clear us away".
The chairman reveals in the statement that the football club had an application for a new stadium at Copthall almost ready to go before the Planning Committee but the council would not provide the club with the land assurances needed. The club now realises this was because they had already committed to give the site away to the Saracens, who want to take over Barnet FC's home turf.
The football club was not advised in advance of the Saracens plans, which appeared out of the blue in a Press announcement during last season, despite ongoing discussions with councillors and officers over the years about the long standing Barnet FC wish to build a new stadium in the borough.
Saracens have been offered a virtual freehold for the multi acre stadium site at Copthall for free; Barnet FC have been asked for more than £200,000 just to renew the lease of their 5 - acre cricket club site to the south of Underhill.
When the current Saracens plans were revealed last season, the council asked Barnet not to object to the planning and promised to deal with outstanding land issues at Underhill, including the car park area and access and lighting for Priory Grove whilst finding an alternative site for the football club, which has been in Barnet since 1888. However, the issues at Underhill were left unresolved and the club were then told that NO site was available for them.
The previous Barnet FC application to move to Copthall was called in and turned down by the Minister (John Prescott) ten years ago after Barnet Council and Ken Livingstone, leader of the Greater London Council at the time, had given approval. Copthall was kept on the agenda in recent months during ongoing talks between the club and council but the council constantly refused to back a stadium for Barnet FC on the site.
"Our supporters should know what's going on", said the chairman, "Life has become very difficult since Mike Freer left as Leader of Barnet Council to become an MP. To compound matters we also have Saracens regularly approaching our sponsors and commercial partners driving money out of Barnet FC and the local Barnet community".
In the last few months the club has sent legal letters to Barnet Council, to which they have yet to receive a full response, and have lobbied the London Mayor's Office. "The Mayor seems very well informed and has a good grasp of the importance of a community based sports club like ours, we hope we can rely on his officers' intervention to prevent this appalling situation from going any further" said the chairman.
Barnet FC employs nearly 200 local people on a full and part - time basis and has 11community officers working in the borough for the community. The council have consistently attacked the club's existence since 2002 and efforts to gain the support of MP Theresa Villiers have failed to resolve the difficulties the club faces.
Barnet FC has had a volatile, even hostile, relationship with the council in recent years. This improved when Councillor Freer was the leader but the latest developments suggest that it has slipped back.
"Now the dust has settled on the new football season we feel our supporters and the community should know what is going on behind the scenes", says the chairman.

He is also a Composer/songwriter for TV and Theatre with a lifetime's experience in studio production, scoring and arranging. The quartet features Graham supported by Barry Parfitt on piano, Jason Simpson on bass and Eric Ford on drums. This band will putt us on the map at our new golf club venue. |

As to the latest gossip on the Sports Club, and I have heard this third hand so I don't know how true it is. The staff have now been given until the end of September to be completely out of there when the Club closes. Originally they had been given a 3 month rolling contract to be caretakers of the place. Now, allegedly, the council is meeting with the current owners to discuss buying back the property to, as you may know, build a school there. Whilst the area does need more schools, its not such a good idea when it comes at the expense of loosing sports facilities. The council owns plenty of land in Barnet, so why destroy amenities for the community, rather than using existing sites? We cannot afford, socially, morally or for the sake of our young peoples health and wellbeing to keep destroying playing fields.

Save Mill Hill Sports Club
Today we have started the campaign to Save Mill Hill Sports Club. The club is situated in Grahame Park Way and is a vital hub for many of the best things in Mill Hill. As well as cricket, football, hockey, squash and boxing, there is a gym and a social club. It also plays host to the Mill Hill Jazz Club as well as the Mill Hill Music festival.
Sadly, whilst most people recognise the importance of good sports facilities for young (and older) people, the message doesn't seem to have gotten through to the people running Barnet Council. It seems that not a year goes by, without us losing another local sports ground. It seems that Barnet Council just doesn't care about providing activities for our children. It is a proven scientific fact that regular exercise reduces the probablity of developing all sorts of chronic ailments, which place a huge burden on Barnet Council social services and the local NHS. When I see young people rioting, I ask myself why providing activities for our youngsters, where they can learn the value of work, understand the importance of team spirit and get themselves fit, are not our no 1 national priority.
I am disturbed to hear that the closure of Mill Hill Sports club has seemingly been brought about by intransigence at Barnet Council. We cannot afford to lose these facilities, which is why we are launching the petition today to try and persuade Barnet Council to think again and save the centre. If our councillors are not prepared to step up and fight for local people, I intend to make sure that they pay the price at the next council elections. As Boris Johnson is standing for mayor next year, I'll also be seeking his opinion.

Mill Hill Sports club to shut in September
My son has been doing a boxing class at Mill Hill Sports club in Grahame Park Way. The site also hosts cricket, Hockey, Football and Squash as well as the Mill Hill Music Festival. The management have informed members that the club will close in September. It looks as though more sports facilities for young people are being lost. The letter sent to members implies that Barnet Council may have put the club owners in an untenable position and forced the sale. I spoke to my sons boxing teacher last night who confirmed that the boxing class at the centre has no finished as a result of the sale.
The Barnet Eye will be sending FOI requests to Barnet Council later today try and ascertain the role of the Council. We will also be emailing local ward councillors for information. We will report back when we have more information. What is 100% clear is that young people are yet again being failed.

Doing anything this Friday ?
I've organised a gig for The MacMillan appeal and The Teenage Cancer Trust this Friday. Headliners are The Alan Warner Band. Alan was guitarist with the Foundations and plays 60-70's Hits We've also got Na Fianna (Irish band). My band "The False Dots" open the show. Doors at 8pm/bar till midnight.
Mill Hill Sports Club, Grahame Park Way Friday 14th May,Tickets £8 (bands start at 8.30pm)
The gig has been organised in memory of Heather Scott who was the childrens welfare officer at St Vincents School. She was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier in the year and sadly passed away just before Easter.
It will be a great night, there will be some excellent music and we'll raise a hatful of money for some very good causes. You can even say hello to one of Mill Hill's most famous bloggers.
