The Tweets of the week in the London Borough of Barnet - 22/2/2014

There has been all manner of tweets in Barnet that I'd like to feature. However rules are rules, so we only feature one per subject and we like to mix up politics, sports, social, community, historical and funny tweets. We hope you like this weeks choice.

1. There were hundreds of tweets about Sweets Way. It is the big story in Barnet this week and dozens retweeting this appalling video. We've chosen Sue Lukes Tweet as it sums up what any reasonable person would feel

SWEETS WAY EVICTIONS 16-17/2/2015: heartbreaking kids stories of eviction from Barnet estate.Anger +| resistance too

2.  Barnet Tory Councillor Gabriel Rozenberg however thinks everything is marvellous in the Borough.  Nothing wrong with talking up the good things, wonder if he's actually read Mrs Angry's blog to see why she's got the hump. This tweet started a quite tasty spat between the two.

. err totes serious. You think Barnet’s ‘broken’. I think Barnet’s terrific. If it’s so awful why is it set to be #1 in London?

3. Maybe you want to keep up with the Lib Dems view of what is going on in Hendon, if you do then Alasdair Hill is the man! Good to see him making the effort. He's only just launched the site, so a bit early to tell, but I think he should be a bit more hyperlocal in his coverage. People love to learn about their community.

4.  Our  favourite Labour Councillor, Dr Devra Kay has something to say as well. She's a keen blogger to boot.

Barnet tenants have 1 take-it-or-leave-it choice of move from home don't want 2 leave & if rejected they're homeless

Barnet is still investing our tax £ in arms makers Protest this! 2 March 6pm Hendon Town Hall when committee meets

6. And that's quite enough of the political stuff. There is far more to our neck of the woods! Danielle Benson is chuffed to discover one of Mill Hills gems. We agree with you Danielle!

Great discovery of the Mill Hill Jazz Club at Mill Hill Golf Club

7. Altogether Better BO are pleased to see the community coming together in Burnt Oak

Nice to see the local community come and engage with Altogether Better Burnt Oak with some tea and biscuits .

 9. Perhaps the funniest spoof tweet of the week.

Reliable sources confirming that Rihanna spent the Valentines night at Wengers Totteridge house in London
10. Some good news hopefully regarding sports facilities for local residents in the Borough

Committee unanimously backs proposals for rebuilding of Copthall and Church Farm Leisure Centres.
.... Normally we only feature ten tweets, but hey ho, rules are made to be broken.
11. And finally. A Mill Hill Music Complex are starting a campaign everyone who loves music in Barnet Should care about

Guest Blog - Learn From the Past? London Borough of Barnet (LBB) Adult Social Care and Health Or Continue to Repeat in The Present and Future!

By Linda Edwards

“Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”  Robert F. Kennedy

Past

My adult daughter has a learning disability and is on the autistic spectrum.  I am a family carer.  I am a reasonable person.  However, I am sure that the London Borough of Barnet (LBB) Social Care and Health senior Managers and Directors would not agree!

I don’t want anything for my disabled daughter that she is not entitled to receive or that other vulnerable people do not receive.  I believe this to be fair and reasonable!

Having challenged their shoddy commissioning and lack of monitoring of damaging and inappropriate services for my disabled daughter, they continued to fund these services and sign them off as “good value” for over 15 years.   I believe this to be unfair, unreasonable and just plain stupid!

They doggedly refuted my formal complaint submitted 28th March 2008 and wasted thousands of pounds of LBB and ratepayers money in defending the complaint, allowing it to progress as far as the Ombudsman stage.

All they had to do was become more competent in their monitoring and evaluating process.  This should undoubtedly have led to the removal of the bullying service provider that was not providing the service to which my disabled daughter was entitled to receive and which they had irresponsibly commissioned.

My daughter became emotionally unwell, struggling for many years because of this inappropriate support, lack of management and staff being thrust on her that we wouldn’t trust to take our dog for a walk!  They certainly knew very little about the needs of people on the autistic spectrum.  Their management were so arrogant as to not want to learn from the Recommendations from the National Autistic Society!

What did LBB Adult Social Care and Health learn from my complaint?
  1. They shortened the complaints process, making it harder for family carers to have a successful outcome.
  2. They learnt that reporting and listening to lies (their response 4th July 2008 to my complaint) prevails and succeeds within the culture of LBB Adult Social Care and Health.
  3. How to best discourage paid and family carers from reporting complaints and safeguarding issues.
  4. LBB Adult Social Care and Health Senior Managers vindictive behaviour results in promotion.

What they should have learnt from my complaint:
  • Family Carers will challenge their dogma, injustice, oppressive culture and resistance to listen to vulnerable people and family carers.
  • We will find the energy and support to continue until there is a satisfactory conclusion for our family member and the people we are supporting and working with.
  • We will do this individually, supported by each other and through organisations and newly formed groups such as “The Campaign Against Destruction of Disabled Support Services” (CADDSS).  For further details, please email CADDSS1 @ gmail.com

Update, Celebration and Thanks
Many of you have read my previous articles and I am thrilled to share with you that there has been a ‘Eureka’ moment because of the change in my daughter’s Service Provider.

I would like to thank my daughter’s solicitor, Yvonne Hossacks without whom I would still be asking for a meeting, which if agreed, would go nowhere because rarely was anything from LBB Adult Social Services and Health Managers followed up or actioned!  There were so many times over many years that I was disregarded but in her role as my daughter’s solicitor, she achieved some considerable change for my daughter.  Solicitors representing vulnerable people in Adult Social Care and Health should not be necessary and I am a sure solicitor who has a social conscience like Yvonne Hossacks would much prefer to be unnecessary and have more profitable work.   Why is the culture of LBB Adult Social Care and Health so unfriendly to working in partnership with family carers?

Thank you to the Family Advocate who accompanied me to so many LBB meetings, even though the meetings achieved nothing for my daughter.  She left many meetings feeling frustrated and upset and once remarked “I have been doing this job for over 30 years and have seen no change in how they behave towards family carers!”  However, it proved crucial that there was a witness to the many broken promises and lack of action from LBB Adult Social Care and Health Managers!

I should also like to thank my daughter’s LBB Social Worker who has ‘listened’ to, ‘heard’ my daughter’s explicit needs, choices and decisions and checked out that they were from her rather than from me as some LBB Managers have suggested!  In spite of her assessment of my daughter’s needs July 2011, in August 2011 when she was on holiday, the LBB In-House Learning Disabilities Services Manager overrode her assessment and removed my daughter’s crucial night support.  This LBB social worker has supported the transition of the new service provider and demonstrated her excitement at the recent amazing changes in my daughter’s personal development.  This must make the role of a caring social worker all the more worthwhile and satisfying.

My sincere thanks and appreciation to this new Head of Integrated Learning Disability Services who has been proactive in trying to heal the emotional damage done to my daughter after the LBB Manager of the In-House Learning Disability Services withdrew my daughter’s night support suddenly in August 2011.  The outcome for her was…….. Guess what?  Promotion!

The new Head of Integrated Learning Disability Services has authorised Direct Payments for as long as my daughter needs night support and has also demonstrated a desire to work in partnership with me as the family carer.  Whilst I fully accept she doesn’t approve of my ‘tone’ in correspondence, I hope she can try to understand that my daughter and I have been on the receiving end of LBB’s Adult Social Care and Health’s “oppression, injustice and resistance” for many, many years…..

It will take a long healing process and conditions set by family and paid carers before we can withdraw from our campaign to highlight the effects of the abuse of power that prevails in LBB Adult Social Care and Health.

Thank you too, to the new service provider who I cannot name just yet for fear that I am ‘dreaming’ about the way in which the new service provider are working with my daughter and me, (family carer) and that tomorrow I may wake up to another nightmare!

Trusting they are working in this way with everyone, these are some of the differences between the new service provider culture and the previous service provider bullies that LBB Adult Social Services and Health Director refused to remove since her response to my complaint on 4th July 2008.  The new service provider:
  1. Responds to my emails
  2. Responds to telephone messages.
  3. Is proactive in planning for my daughter’s future and greater independence
  4. Has not lied to me!
  5. Has been respectful of my daughter’s needs.
  6. Whilst they have been proactive in supporting my daughter’s needs, they have also reacted positively to her decisions and choices and encouraged her rather than attempted to control her.
  7. The new Service Provider has been respectful of my own needs as a family carer (I am at last beginning to plan my own life because my daughter is being supported appropriately and I am no longer having to fight for my daughter’s support to be as it should be!)  For example, on one occasion, when I became ‘panicky’ because of the many years of the previous staff being late, their response was “you’re allowed to panic, too!” There was no contempt or scorn, as I have been so used to in the past.
  8. They have demonstrated respect, civility and understanding of everyone’s needs.
  9. They have not blamed me if my daughter has made a decision that is opposed to their own view.

Of course, with all the above, the new service provider has higher expectations to meet and further to fall than the previous service provider bullies, but we are all willing to take this risk!

When I thank them, they respond, “We are only doing our job!”  Why didn’t LBB Adult Social Care and Health Managers and Director insist that the previous service provider bullies did their job?

With my daughter’s now superb service, why am I still campaigning about the past?
  1.  My daughter will never get the wasted years back that LBB Adult Social Care and Health robbed her of by rebutting my formal complaint.
  2. She will not recover from the emotional damage done to her because LBB ignored the NAS Recommendations and my ‘expert’ knowledge and experience as a family carer
  3. I was made unwell on many, many occasions.  This still affects my work and my life.
  4. LBB Adult Social Care and Health Directors and Managers have never acknowledged their responsibility for our many years of angst caused by them.
  5. We have uncovered many similar issues that are being ‘swept under the constantly expanding LBB Social Care and Health carpet’
  6. In spite of many issues of abuse, safeguarding, lies and rudeness reported to LBB Senior Managers and Director of Adult Social Care and Health, they have refused to remove the previous bullying service providers from the list for other LBB vulnerable people. This is outrageous!
  7. A written acknowledgement statement and apology needs to be forthcoming.
  8. A commitment for change needs to be put into place and monitored by independent lay leaders, including family carers.
  9. £16,000 is owed to my daughter, which LBB promised to ensure was returned to her.  This was never actioned and I have always been too exhausted and weary in fighting to ensure my daughter was safe and had the necessary support to worry about her money.

Present

Why am I connecting my daughter’s past trauma caused by LBB Adult Social Care and Health senior management to LBB Cabinet Resources Committee Meeting Monday 16th January 2012 to finalise the handing over of Learning Disabilities Services to the new Local Authority Trading Company?  There are a few reasons for this connection and my continuing campaign:
  1. Cllr Rajput, Cabinet Member for Adults fervently believes that LBB Adult Social Care is providing a high quality of service to vulnerable people and their family carers.  The problem is that whilst he may be taking note of carer’s surveys etc, he appears to be listening too much to the same senior managers and directors who have behaved so unprofessionally!
  2. Many other vulnerable people are receiving a similar lack of support and respect and suffer from the same lack of partnership.
  3. One of the people who asked questions at the Cabinet Resources Committee Meeting, asked about previous Safeguarding issues that had not been dealt with adequately when reported to LBB Adult Social Services and Health senior management.

Immediately after the Cabinet Resources Meeting on Monday 16th January, the Director of Adult Social Care and Health rushed out of the meeting to approach the person who had asked the Safeguarding questions.  She informed us that it was not appropriate to bring Safeguarding issues to this public meeting (no personal confidential information had been divulged).  She also said that had these Safeguarding issues been brought to her privately, she would, as she always does, have dealt with them immediately… watch this space for update!
  1. Councillor Brian Coleman, (together with his dear mother), who both give considerable service to the community, came downstairs to speak to the people who had asked Safeguarding questions at the Cabinet Resources Committee Meeting.  Coincidentally, he also advised them that this meeting was not an appropriate place to ask Safeguarding questions.
  2. The Director of Adult Social Care and Health had been responsible for responding to my complaint (4th July 2008).   I have continued to question LBB why what is written in glossy brochures and spoken in meetings and public conferences are not being put into practice.

Because of my behaviour in this way, the Director has refused to allow me to be a member of the Learning Disability Partnership Board.  This is in spite of an “excellent interview” and “vast knowledge and experience” as reported by the people who interviewed me for the position of being a member!

This decision is spiteful and undemocratic and should have been challenged by Cllr Rajput – please look forward to my letter enclosing the communications and notes of meetings regarding my exclusion.
  1. The Manager of Barnet Homes and the Director of Adult Social Care and Health spoke at the Cabinet Resources Committee Meeting about LBB having extensive carer involvement.  I believe this to be true.  However, is this involvement only with family carers who do not complain and challenge injustice?  Once they complain about a service for their family member, senior management abuse their power and authority by discriminating and excluding them!

The French sculptor Auguste Rodin said “Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience widely”
So how have I used “the experience widely”?  Whilst LBB Adult Social Care and Health were actively rebutting my complaint and allowing all my daughter’s problems to continue, little did I know that in another part of Barnet were Safeguarding issues being reported to the very same people who were disregarding the issues that I had complained about on behalf of my daughter!  Shame on all the people who knew about this and did nothing!

Future

Please watch this space for further celebrations of good practice from my daughter’s new service provider.  I am optimistic and hopeful that the ‘honeymoon period’ of the first six months will continue because of the management of her service.

Recommendations for LBB Adult Social Care and Health, which I am so sure, will be disregarded:
  1. Adhere in practice to Government policies and strategies, instead of merely speaking and writing about them.
  2. Monitor and evaluate outcomes!
  3. Adhere in practice to their own LBB policies and strategies, instead of continually speaking and writing about them.
  4. Monitor and evaluate outcomes!
  5. Whistleblowers should be embraced and helped to feel safe, as they are able to see what Managers and Directors don’t have the opportunity to see.   Safeguarding training and administration is costing LBB a great deal of money.  Therefore, as soon as whistle blowers have the courage to bring issues of abuse to the notice of managers, considerable energy and resources has been put into cover up, thus allowing the abuse to continue.  This is unforgivable, unacceptable and must be reversed immediately!
  6. The Director of Adult Social Services and Health ignored my three communications for a meeting (early 2011) so that I could describe how her response in refusing to remove the ‘cowboy’ service provider had put my disabled daughter at risk and damaged her and me, as a family carer.  Instead, she passed my request to her senior manager to action as a complaint, when it clearly was not a complaint!  Once again, wasting valuable resources and money in investigating a complaint that hadn’t been made rather than agree to meet with me to hear the outcome of not removing the bullying service provider. They must be made accountable for the money and resources they waste!
  7. Some people are not suited to working with vulnerable people.  The odd day training cannot break down a culture of bad practice that has been in place for many years, especially if Management endorses this practice.  LBB need to be less concerned with protecting staff and themselves and more concerned with the rights of vulnerable people according to the Seven Key Outcomes for Social Social Care Service Users.

Barnet Eye war on Spongers and parasites : A Coleman Porky prime cut?

Poor old Brian Coleman. The stress of all the troughing must be getting to him. He claimed in todays Evening Standard that he works 100 hours a week and he has only had three days off since Xmas (presumably New Years Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday).

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23857940-councillor-on-pound-118500-a-year-says-im-good-value-for-money.do

I suppose, the nub of the matter is what constitutes work. Lets see what he does for Barnet :-

He's on the following committees :-

Annual Council - Member -  Next Meeting May 2011 (annual)
Cabinet - Member - Once a month
Cabinet Resources Committee - Member - Once a MonthChipping Barnet Area Environment Sub-Committee - Substitute - Once a MonthChipping Barnet Area Planning Sub-Committee - Substitute - Once a monthCouncil - Member - Next meeting November 02 (approx every 2 months)

Then there is his ward surgery (which presumably he shares with the other two councillors) :-
Third Saturday of the month 10.30am-12noon. Barnet House, 1255 High Road, N20.

Then there's the the reports he has to read as Cabinet member for Environment (3 since April as far as I can see) :-
http://committeepapers.barnet.gov.uk/democracy/dp/meetinglist1mthcom.asp?intSubSectionID=25&intSectionID=4&meetingtype=Officer%20in%20Consultation%20with%20Cabinet%20Member%28s%29

You get the idea. Given that his former boss Mike Freer once said that the Council officers do all the work, there isn't a 100 hours a weeks worth of work here, is there?

Then there's his work for the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (he's chairman).

Forthcoming Meetings

  • 16 September 2010
  • 18 November 2010
  • 27 January 2011
  • 24 March 2011
  • 23 June 2011 - Annual meeting
That's what I call a highly taxing schedule of work.
It seems he attends a few other committees - check if you like -
http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/CommitteesAndPanels.asp

Here's his full list -
http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/MemberProfile_BrianColeman.asp

There's the appointments committee (last meeting in February)
There's the Finance and Procurement Committee (four meetings a year?)
The urgency committee (last meeting in March)

And here's some idea of what he was up to (his expenses) for Feb & March when he was "working 100 hours a week without a day off)

And what about the GLA - Well this is approx half his income at Barnet and LFEPA. Do you see 50 hours a week here? I will have a look at what he's up to for the other 50 hours at the GLA later in the week. In the meantime you may be interested to know that his boss at The GLA, Roger Evans says on his blog today that they are all off now till September, which gives you some idea of the heavy work load there.

http://city-hall.blogspot.com/2010/07/mqt.html

All I can say is this, Mr Coleman claims that he works 100 hours a week look a tad dodgy to me based on this. A few sporadic committee meetings, a few dinners and a meeting every two weeks with the Fire Commissioner. We'll look at his "work" for the GLA later this week. You can check his profile here. You would expect a flagrant self publicist like Coleman to tell us all about his work in his press releases. According to his profile the last one was over a month ago

http://www.london.gov.uk/profile/brian-coleman

For a man who works so hard, he seems to have a lot of spare time for outside interests :-

So does Brian Coleman really work 100 hours a week for Barnet, The GLA and LFEPA for his £114,000 a year? I'll let you decide. I'm off to be sick

Allowances for Barnet Councillors - Update

You may recall that we mentioned the issue of how there was a bit of a punch up amongst our local Tories about the allowances Councillors pay themselves. As you may recall, the old guard see the opportunity to trouser even more of your hard earned wonga under the guise of reform. A report reaches me that their chosen method of getting away with it is to rob Peter to pay Paul. In otherwords, shift allowances and cash from everyone else to themselves. To their credit, some of the newer Tory Councillors are not too impressed with this idea. This is why the paper hasn't even been released onto the Council website for review - The relevant paper says "Report to follow". It appears that there, shall we say, be a teeny weeny row about the whole issue.

Anyway, it seems that the whole Tory group are looking to Lynne Hillan for Leadership here. Now whether this Leadership will take the form of a £30,000 rise in dosh for herself, paid for by cuts for everyone else (save a select inner cabal) or cuts for all, who can say. It just seems rather sad that at a time when the Council should be working tirelessly to try and help the good people of Barnet cope with the effects of huge cuts in Government grants, they are spending all their time arguing over how much wonga they can trouser.

I hear that there is one ex-mayor of Barnet who has been having lots of private, behind the scenes chats with his colleagues. I have no idea what they could be about though. Have you?

Sausages and Brian Coleman

When it comes down to it, the London Borough of Barnet is just a little bit too full of people who are just a little bit too puffed up with their own sense of self importance and just a little too lacking in a sense of humour. Sadly, having failed in most other walks of life, they enter local politics and end up making decisions which have a huge effect on peoples lives. It is something I like to refer to as Esther Rantzen syndrome. Esther Rantzen made her name presenting a program called "Thats Life". It was a mildly humourous program which was on TV in the late 1970's. It was probably the first program to champion consumer rights and give the common man in the street 2 minutes of fame. It featured Richard Stilgoe who would play the piano and sing funny ditties, they would go out on the street and do vox pop shots. It got OK viewing figures until one day they struck lucky. They featured a dog which could say "Sausages". This was an overnight sensation. Everyone suddenly loved That's Life and Esther Rantzen. Viewing figures shot through the roof. Esther Rantzen for a while was hot property.

Now whilst the only thing the vast majority of people wanted to see was the dog saying Sausages, Esther Rantzen thought that the success was down to her personal brilliance. For a while, it was my favourite show, purely because a dog saying sausages was rather funny. Sadly for Esther, she never really got the fact that talking dogs make great TV. She never really got the fact that if the dog could have presented the whole show, then it would have been the greatest show ever, anywhere.

It is rather like the numerous politicians in Barnet who think they have been elected because they are the bees knees. They are really the Esther Rantzen to their party, which is the talking dog saying "Sausages". Sure some of them have a personal following, but how many would have been elected had they stood as independents? I don't begrudge them their success at the polls. I don't begrudge them their allowances, but it does make me laugh when the Brian Colemans of this world say that "The residents party where humiliated" or similar comments. I wonder how many votes Coleman would get as an independent or as a residents party candidate?

Did he write the Tory Manifesto which got him elected? He's just been appointed as Cabinet minister in Barnet for the Environment and he can't even stick to the manifesto he was elected on, ditching the commitments to the Green Belt and saying "My priority is roads, roads, roads". The likes of Brian Coleman really don't get it, do they?

Just as TV has moved on from the days when a dog saying sausages would get you 20 million viewers, sooner or later the voters of Barnet and Camden will tire of the Tory party. Mr Coleman is currently GLA rep for Camden and Barnet. In two years time, I wonder whether the public will be quite so keen on him, as Tory cuts bite. I doubt that even a dog saying "Sausages" will save him. Maybe I'll buy myself a Parrot, train it to say "Colemans got to go" and see if I can get a TV slot. I've tried to train the dog to say it, but she just looks at me like I'm an idiot (she's probably right).

Barnet Council Elections - Mill Hill Ward

It seems like I'm a better blogger than I am Council candidate. I've had more hits than I got votes over the last two days. Congratulations to John Hart, Suri Khatri and Brian Schama who won for the Tories.

They are all nice guys who won with humour and dignity. They are probably the finest of the current Barnet Tory crop. I spent much of the day sharing jokes with them as the vote progressed. I've always believed that Mill Hill was a great place and even our Tories are a cut above the run of the mill bunch.

I must say a special word about John Hart. He lost in 1994 and contested every election till he got back in at the 2006 Council elections. Respect. A fine example to Kim, Jeremy and myself. I think we'd have done a better job, otherwise I wouldn't have stood, but if you have to vote for Tories in Mill Hill, you have the best of the bunch in Barnet.

The Prime Minister is in Burnt Oak

For a pleb, I'm rather lucky. I've met two Prime Ministers out on the campaign trail!

Only one was actually Prime Minister, my meeting with Lady Thatcher in 1974 (documented elsewhere in this blog) walking home from School occurred when she was merely MP for Finchley.

The other meeting occurred in 1979. James Callaghan was Prime Minister and he was on the campaign trail. I was pondering this visit and how times have changed. At the time, Hendon North was a safe Tory seat, with John Gorst as MP (would Brown bother with a safe Tory seat today). There are many parallels between 1979 and today. Callaghan and Brown were both not elected, they took over from people who had won three elections each (Wilson and Blair). They had both been involved in Labour governments which had huge fiscal crises (IMF Bailout and the Credit Crunch). They had both been viewed as good chancellors by the nation. They both were accident prone  (Callaghan "Crisis, what crisis?". Brown - Bigotgate).

Having said that, there are differences. Callaghan was generally liked in the country. He wasn't seen as the problem. Most people preferred Callaghan to Thatcher personally at the time. He was a warm character, often called "Sunny Jim". They were just sick of the Labour government. The Liberals were seen as a minor irrelevence. They were expecting to get a dozen or so MP's and their only real hope of power was to hold the balance of power and force the introduction of PR, propping up a minority government. Today the Lib Dems are poised to get the largest number of seats since the second world war. Whilst Thatcher was a hard right Tory with a clear agenda and presented a clear change from Callaghans government, nobody really seems to know what David Cameron stands for (least of all himself).

Anyway, I was in the sixth form common room at Orange Hill Senior High School when someone said "Jim Callaghan is visiting the Labour hall in Burnt Oak to make a speech at midday". Myself, Boz Boorer, Phil Bloomberg and a few others immediately trudged off down. It's fair to say that some of us were more motivated by a desire to get on telly than any deeply held political views. As it turned out, the Prime Minister turned up an hour late. He was given a raptuous ovation for five minutes, then said "thanks for your support. I can tell you that we are going to win" and then left again. Outside a line of dignitaries was formed to shake hands, but we all pushed in front. The Prime Minister said as he shook hands "Thanks for all your hard work". I replied "my pleasure". We were given a roll of Labour stickers, which we went out and plastered the common room with. Phil Bloomberg then suggested we go out canvassing. We made our way up to the Stonegrove Estate and the first door Phil knocked on, when asked if he was voting Labour, replied "No mate, I'm National Front". At this Phil punched him in the face. A year or so later I was in a pub in Dean Street, The Sound and Vision, that had a video jukebox - probably the first in the country. They had "John, I'm only dancing" by the Polecats on - the band in which Phil Bloomberg played bass. As they were mates, I played the track. One of my mates, who was in a hard core, very political punk band said "Why are you playing this. I can't stand this sort of music". I relayed the Phil Bloomberg canvassing story and he said "Sorry mate, I stand corrected".

Times change.  I'm pleased to say that I've not resorted to such measures in my campaign for the Lib Dems.

Mill Hill Landmarks : The University of London Observatory

Many people passing through Mill Hill on the A41 or A1 will notice some strange domed buildings on the West side of the road the just south of Mill Hill Circus Roundabout. This is the  University of London Observatory.  There is a great write up on the history of the observatory on their website and if you are interested in astronomy there are regular open days. Along with the medical research on the Ridgeway, the Observatory is one of the centres of scientific excellence in Mill Hill.

One interesting item of note is that the nearby subway under the A1/A41 was refurbished a few years ago and murals were installed depicting the planets and other objects of astronomical interest.

I am rather keen on these murals. I would go as far as to say that this subway is the finest in the Borough of Barnet. Next time you are passing take some time out to have a look.

Do you know of any other themed subways in the London Borough of Barnet. Are any of them worth a visit from the Barnet Eye? I'm fascinated by local history and our landmarks. The more oddball the better.

Traffic Calming - Barnet Council Style

Last year I attended a meeting of Barnet Councils Cabinet where Mr Novak, who lives in Uphill Road, presented a paper detailing why road humps should be put back into his road. His report had the support of all but three of the residents. He detailed how hundreds of schoolchildren us his road to walk to Mill Hill County High. He detailed how 50% of cars break the speed limit according to the councils own stats (bearing in mind that at some periods of the day there is congestion). He detailed how residents had suffered accidents due to speeding motorists using the road as a ratrun from Marsh Lane to Lawrence Street. He detailed how motorists hurtled down the road to avoid Apex Corner as a cut through to Mill Hill Circus. In short he made his case.

Barnet Councils then road supremo, Andrew Harper (now deputy Leader) dismissed the report. The views of local residents didn't matter. The safety of schoolchildren didn't matter. Why, you may ask?

The answer which Mr Harper gave, in no uncertain terms was this "Barnet Council is a motorist friendly Council so we don't want traffic calming measures, the car comes first". Mr Harper pointed out that the average speed in Uphill Road was just under the speed limit, therefore there wasn't a problem (ignoring the fact that this meant 50% of cars were breaking the speed limit). Mr Harper said that road humps damage cars and slow down emergency services. This is paramount. The emergency services must be able to get from A to B as quickly as possible (no doubt to attend accidents caused by speeding motorists).

As I drove around the London Borough of Barnet this weekend, I pondered Andrew Harpers comments. Due to Barnet  being unable to access £27.4 of reserves in Iceland, having reportedly lost £12 Million completely and having lost milions in interest, there is a cash crisis. As a result Pothles are not being fixed. These have sprung up all over the Borough. On many busy roads such as Pursely road, used by the 221 bus, these are huge. Car suspensions are being destroyed by these menacing obstacles. Wheras you see road humps and there are signs to alert you, potholes are a hidden menace. I saw an ambulance on Pursley Road nearly crash on Saturday, avoiding a particularly nasty hole.

The thing about potholes is that they grow every day they aren't fixed. As they grow, the whole fabric of the road disintegrates. A small hole can be fixed relatively cheaply and easily, as they grow, the whole road cracks up. When it comes down to it, this is one of the first and most noticeable signs of Barnets Icelandic financial woes. A decent administration would have set up a "Potholes task force" after the bad weather and would have fixed them up as soon as they appeared. In the long run this is far cheaper than resurfacing the whole road. Next time Harper and his colleagues tell you they are motorist friendly, consider the damage being done to cars everywhere by Barnets pot holes.

As to the cost. If you damage your car on a pothole, it is the responsibility of the Council. I'd suggest you write to Andrew Harper and ask him for the cash.

Traffic calming measures come in many forms. For Barnets Tories, their favourate is the Pot hole.

Gather your Gorms - It's time to bash Boris

Dave Hill at the Guardian criticises Labour for it's gormless Boris Bashing. Quite rightly Dave says that Labours ridiculous policy of trying to turn people off Boris by calling him a toff or a racist is completely counter productive. Here at the Barnet Eye, we like to think we've got a cupboard full of gorms. We are quite happy to bash Boris, but we limit our Boris bashing to bashing him for breaking his promises and not living up to his expectations.

Boris promised to be a "mayor for the suburbs". He said Ken had neglected areas such as Barnet and he didn't understand the needs of the people who live here. So how has our Barnet friendly Mayor worked out? For a Mayor who claims to be in touch with the suburbs, he clearly doesn't understand that his core constituency are commuters. What has Boris done for the commuters of Barnet? What has he had to say about the First Capital Connect Thameslink fiasco? Given how Boris ejected Sir Ian Blair from the Met Police Commisioners job even though it wasn't within his remit, I wonder why he has done nothing. Had Boris thundered " I will do everything in my power to sack this useless company" when the "emergency timetable" was implemented, I'm sure that the minds of FCC would have focussed rather sharply.

As to the tube service. How many Barnet Commuters were affected by TFL's lacklustre attitude to running a service in the snow. We always get the mantra that it's not economically viable to prepare for bad weather, but according to figures bandied about on the radio and TV, yesterdays disruption to London cost billions. How hard can it be to keep tube lines running when bad weather has long been forecast?

I predicted that the downfall of Boris would be due to his lack of attention to detail and his lack of management experience. It seems to me that this is proving to be the case. Time after time his poor judgement on senior appointments has shown him to be unsuitable for the top job. The Veronica Wadley affair is only the latest in a series of awful judgements by the Mayor.

Another example is some of the bizarre decisions by TFL, of which Boris is the Boss. Abolishing the River Thames from the Tube Map was one. Closer to home in Mill Hill, the decision to reroute the 186 bus away from the Watford Way between Mill Hill Circus and Aerodrome Road is another prime example of lack of attention to detail. This has inconvenienced many local pensioners who used to use the bus to go shopping at Brent Cross. It has also significantly increased the journey time for people North of Mill Hill Circus. Originally a new bus was promised to serve Grahame Park, but a bit of Boris penny pinching put paid to this.

So has Boris been a better Mayor for Barnet than Ken? Not if you use Thameslink. Not if you use the Northern Line, not if you use the 186 Bus in Mill Hill, not if you have to buy a ticket to travel on buses and tubes. The abolition of the Western congestion charge zone will have miniscule positive effects for the voters of Barnet as few people here enter the area regularly. They will however have to pick up the cost of it's removal, in fare and tax increases.

Like many Londoners, I don't care what school Boris went to. All I want from my Mayor is attention to detail and a good job done. Boris has done neither.

Wanted: Moat cleaner - best rates of pay apply !

Last night was our Thursday Football boys night out. Off we went to Hollywood Bowl in Finchley, then on to ASK for a meal and a few drinks. The guys I play 5 a side football with every week are a great bunch. They are pretty typical of the people who live in Mill Hill and so I thought there response to the news that I'm standing for the Lib Dems would be interesting. Anyone who has ever played a team sport will know that after a few drinks you soon find out what people really think.

"So when you kick us, can we launch a standards complaint" was the first quip. "When will you be getting your moat?" "I suppose you'll need a duck house for your pond" "When will you be getting a second home?" is a choice selection of the others.

I'd expect nothing less from my friends. A good wind up and a bit of healthy cynicism is healthy. I'm lucky in as much as I've got people around me who will keep me grounded and if I start developing the bubble of pomposity that some of our politicians have developed, they will take great pleasure in popping it. I've no interest in having a moat, a bell tower, a duck house or a flat in Westminster. I just want to make Mill Hill as nice a place as possible to live and have a council which does the best job it can. That will be the "bonus" that I'm looking for.

Jack Cohen : The future of the Conservative Party in Barnet

The vast majority of Conservative voters in the London Borough of Barnet are decent, honest and hardworking people. They vote Conservative because they associate with the following values :-

Giving people more power and opportunity over their lives
Raising standards in schools
Building skills in the job market
Decentralising power

These are keynote policies on the Conservative Party website. There's just one problem for Conservatives in Barnet. Their local party believes in NONE of these things. Let me give you  a few examples :-

Giving people more power and opportunity over their lives - The local Conservatives decided that it would be a good idea to get rid of wardens from the various sheltered housing complexes across Barnet. They conducted a "consultation" with the tenants to see if they liked the idea. The results were remarkable. 85% said no. They hated the idea. Did the Barnet Conservatives (lead by Lynne Hillan on this fatal policy) give those people power and opportunity over their lives? No, they totally ignored them. They thought they knew better. Worse than that though. They hadn't even bothered to properly check out the legality of what they were doing. One of the tenants, 78 year old David Young, decided to ask his solicitor to check out what was happening. The result. A High Court judge has called a halt to the whole process. Just to make matters worse, when David Young took "power and opportunity" himself, how did they react? They launched a complaint against his solicitor with the Law Society. Like most of the other legal cases Barnet launches, they lost. I don't believe that a single normal Conservative voter would find this anything other than repugnant behaviour by their party.

Raising Standards in Schools - Fiona Bulmer who is the Tory responsible for education standards, does quite a good job, I wouldn't criticise her. Sadly Matthew Offord, the Candidate for Hendon has muscled in on her responsibility and took the portfolio for investment in education. He has brought his usual reverse midas touch to the role. The result. Chaos, kids in portacabins. Offord doesn't want to take the rap, because he knows it will damage his chances in Hendon, so he's wheeled out Fiona Bulmer to take the heat.He was happy to take the headlines when new schools were announced and the cash was rolling in. If you click on the link on his name above, you'll see that he's been moved sideways, where he can do less damage, as Borough Safety officer. That is how Offord behaves. Get a job, take the plaudits, then leg it when it all goes wrong.

Building skills in the job market - Barnet has a huge project called Future Shape. This is all about "outsourcing" local jobs. Rather than giving work to local people in hard times, the jobs are exported to other boroughs, other parts of the country or to call centres in foreign countries. Of course there is one area where they excel at "building skills". Yup, you guessed - for their mates. Vanessa Gearson has had various roles in the local Tories. She was a Councillor. She's stood as a candidate. She wanted to stand in Finchley, but Mike Freer got the nod. Knowing what she's like, Mike gave her a great consolation prize. She's now the head of communications at Barnet Council. You may wonder what sort of a person she is. Now I've no idea, but click on this link and see what the Tories own website says about her. I've no idea what her salary is now, but apparently it was £60K per year before her promotion.

Decentralising Power - There are 220,000 people in Barnet. Do you know how many selected Mike Freer to be Leader of the Council? Well at the last Council election, a guy called Brian Salinger was the Leader of the Conservatives. He lead them to an increased majority. Immediately after, Brian Coleman proposed a motion of no Confidence within the Tory group and he was ousted. Freer stood against him and was selected. 23 people decided. Many decisions which used to be made by full council are now made "in cabinet"  - ie behind closed doors.

If I was a real Conservative living in Barnet, I'd have nothing to do with this sleazy bunch. Clearly no sane Tory would vote for Labour with Gordon Brown in charge, but locally? I've been to a few Couincil meetings and the man who talks real sense is Jack Cohen and his Lib-Dems. The only way that Barnet will ever clean up it's act is a thrashing, when the National party does well.

If you don't follow my advice, don't complain when the Council Tax goes even higher. Barnet Taxes have rising far quicker than just about every Lib Dem Council anywhere over the last 8 years.

Barnet Council's Oddest Press Release Yet

There are many things which you think would concern Tory Parliamentary hopeful and Borough Safety Officer Matthew Offord (AKA Captain Useless). Burglars like this, Gangs like this, Knifemen like this, Dangerous pollution like this, Neighbours from hell like this.

What is his top Concern? That those of us who have a bit of spare Gold to flog, may not be getting top dollar. To quote Mr Offord from his press release

For a lot of people in these difficult financial times selling gold is the only way to keep their heads above water
Sadly all of the people I know who are suffering from the bite of the recession and the huge rise in Council Tax under the Tories don't have too many gold bars under the bed, or even Krugerands on the mantlepiece.

Mr Offord also has some advice on how to get the best price for your tiaras and candlesticks
However, the advice to people wanting to sell their gold items is to shop around first and take time to make sure you get the best price, as the payment offered can vary so much.
This is very good advice, not just for people wishing to sell gold. I'd suggest that maybe people such as Matthew Offord, who commission large projects such as the Aerodrome Road Bridge redevelopment might take this advice when selecting contractors. Matthew Offord used to boast about what a great job he'd done selecting contractors, until it all went wrong and the Barnet Taxpayer was left with an £11 Million overspend. Shame he didn't shop around a bit more.

The Barnet Eye has some advice for the voters of Hendon. Before selecting which candidate to vote for in the election, see how good they've been at their job. Matthew Offord used to be Deputy Leader and he used to be in charge of Transport. he was a disaster, so he got moved sideways. In his bid to improve the Hendon Conservatives, he's opened a new office. Guess where? In Ballards Lane, Finchley. His office isn't even in the Constituency (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS)

I thought I'd see how easy it was, using the TFL route planner to get from Graham Park, in the Middle of Offord's target constituency, to his office which is well outside?I think that this is an insult to the voters of Hendon

Still what do you expect from a guy who thinks that the answer to the credit crunch is to sell the family silver (or Gold). No wonder Mike Freer dumped him as deputy
