Cable thefts on Railways

There have been a couple of instances recently where travellers and commuters have been stuck for hours on end, due to the theft of copper cables from railway. Often the actual value of the copper is small, under £200. The effect this has is massive. As the price of scrap copper rockets, it is clear that the current penalties are totally inadequate. It is time legislation was passed to enable the seizure of the assets of any scrap dealer who deals in stolen copper. On top of that they should have a lengthy spell in prison. The thefts cost the country millions of pounds and the people massive problems. This is one of the most anti social and disruptive crimes imaginable. It is time the government got a grip. There is little point in the British Transport Police catching the culprits if nothing is done.
