A MASS LOBBY OF BARNET COUNCILis being organised in response to the recent news that Barnet Council has made permanent the appointment of Laura Johnson to a senior housing role at The Barnet Group. Laura Johnson. Johnson was the Director of Housing at Kensington and Chelsea council at the time of the Grenfell disaster. According to a report in the Guardian "
The Grenfell inquiry found that, in her previous role, Johnson pushed for a new contractor to carry out the tower’s renovation works on a lower budget, which ultimately meant metal cladding was swapped for combustible plastic-filled panels to save money.". Tbe Barnet Eye and many local residents think that this is a shameful decision. There is an ongoing inquiry into the tragedy. How can the Barnet Labour administration possibly justify the appointment of someone who failed so catastrophically in a previous role to a senior role in the organisation that runs housing in Barnet. I have documented many terrible decisions on this blog since its inception in 2008, but appointing someone so closely associated with the death of 70 people, in a tragedy that was completely avoidable and caused by shoddy work and cost cutting, authorised at the highest level in the council, must be the most crass of all.
