Police State Britain

There's a Tory called Dan Hope who spends his life writing nasty twitter messages about anyone on Barnet who he thinks is on the left. He's called the Barnet  Bugle and at times he can be a tad annoying. Much of what he tweets is complete nonsense and he knows it. Many in Barnet think he's the attack dog of the local Tories and he's got a telephone hotline from Tory Leader Richard Cornelius, who instructs him to destroy Cornys opponents. Personally I just think he should get out more and join a dating site, but hey ho.

The point is that in a free country, having the likes of Dan and his tweets is part of the scenery. You can't just allow free speech for people you agree with. So I celebrate the Dan Hopes of this world.

Why do I say this? Well I saw this tweet

If you follow the link, you'll see how the person who left the tweet got a visit from the Police. This is a democracy and such a thing is outrageous. So next time you see an annoying misleading tweet, remind yourself that it is a sign everything is ok

Green Activist posts fake UKIP literature on the internet then claims he is being victimised by police who are simply doing their job and investigating a report.

I do find it amusing how you lefties are very good at dishing it out, but not so good at taking it. You don’t like the comments that Mr Hope makes about you, but you are quite happy to use disparaging terms like ‘twats’ to condemn someone with whom you disagree.

I accept that, more often than not, you do at least try to be courteous in your criticism of your political opponents, and occasionally you even try and use ‘facts’ to support an argument, unlike Mrs Angry, but the nature of the political beast is that it invokes strong passion on either side of the debate.

Personally, I have no problem with this. I don’t object to being called names but there is a difference between name calling and, for example, making a comment that is defamatory or libellous. I also think we do have to take a stand against misrepresentation. It is easy to see how the leaflet, at first glance, could be have been misconstrued for a genuine UKIP leaflet, although calling the Police was an overreaction. The Returning Officer or Electoral Commission should be empowered to speedily deal with complaints of this nature.

Oo er David, Usually you dont talk cobblers. is the move not agreeing with you? This was a spoof tweet by a clearly identifyable green. it was not a bogus leaflet which would be illegal. youd have to be a moron not realise.

I dont mind old Dopeybollox insulting me. It is just banter. When I refered to twats who tweet I wasnt referring to oponents I was referring to everyone as I think twitter is pointless and very banal. You should move back to Barnet. Essex is clouding your judgement. Btw I dont have political opponents as I dont bbelong to any party and I dont support any party. You would be surprised if you knew my voting intentions

I wasn’t aware that this was a spoof tweet by a “clearly identifiable green” as I am no longer on Twitter and I try to avoid clicking on links to the Gruaniad. From reading your blog, I was under the impression that someone had created a leaflet to pass off as a genuine UKIP leaflet. But thanks for calling me a moron!

I would challenge you on your claim not to have political opponents. You are not a member of any political party and neither am I. But you are known to be sympathetic to the left wing point of view and I am sympathetic to the right. That doesn’t mean I will vote Tory, and I have voted tactically for Labour in the past. That doesn’t mean I support Labour policies. I wouldn’t presume to know your voting intentions but suspect that you are not averse to tactical voting also should the occasion arise.

Would you like to organise a whip round to help fund DCMD’s return to Barnet?

David,

Essex clearly has muddled your brain. Since when has "I couldn't be bothered to do my homework" been an answer in the DCMD household?
