There is a new policing bill passing through Parliament as I write this. There has been no more repressive legislation ever passed in peacetime in the UK. I recently was asked to contribute to a short film by Liberty, the civil rights and freedom campaign. I explained how the bill would have stopped our local community saving Friern Barnet library from a very unpopular attempt to close it by our local council.
I am proud to have been at the forefront of the campaign, but many of the clauses of the bill would have laid me liable to up to ten years in prison, I'd have certainly thought twice. Please watch this video, which lays out my objections and how the campaign successfully saved a cornerstone of our local community.
What I find rather depressing is reading anti maskers, anti vaxxers and covidiots on Twitter and Facebook ranting that their particular bugbear is a sign of fascism, whilst completely ignoring the passage through Parliament of a bill that poses a real and present threat to the freedoms UK citizens have taken for granted for centuries. We desperately need people to sign the petition - Click Here to sign - to register as strong a response as possible. I urge everyone who is worried about the ever growing threats to our basic freedoms to support this campaign. If those who spend their lives tweeting and posting that Masks etc are repressive spent a tenth of their effort supporting the campaign to stop a real, clear and present threat to our freedoms, we'd have a chance. I disagree with them, but I support their rights to speak and protest. If this bill passes, they will find that they cannot make their voices heard, just as I wouldn't be able to Save Libraries or protest about outsourcing.
