What better way to start the New Year series of Saturday Lists than with an Ian Dury song, especially a classic. So I ask you, do you agree with Ian's list? I was thinking of other songs with lists. There's Paul Simon's 50 ways to leave your lover, which I want my money back for as he only lists 7. There's also Julie Andrews A few of my favourite things. It got me thinking, so I googled the subject of list songs. It seems there is a whole Wikipedia page of them, although I'm not altogether sure all of them are proper list songs. Although the Beach Boys California Girls has a list of various girls, I am not sure that is central to the song, for instance. I'd never even noticed that Kidney Bingos by Wire even had a list. Anyway I digress. It's a New Year and if you need a reason to be cheerful, really you only need a list with one entry and that is Ian Dury!
(One, two, three)
The working folly
Good golly Miss Molly
And boats
The Bolshoi Ballet
Jump back in the alley
And nanny goats
Dominica camels
All other mammals
Plus equal votes
Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly
And porridge oats
A bit of come and share it
Your welcome we can spare it
And yellow socks
Too nutty to be naughty
Going on forty
No electric shocks
The smile of a parrot
A little drop of claret
Anything that rocks
The days when I ain't spotty
Sitting on a potty
Curing smallpox
